SEGA sample origin discovery thread "Finding the DNA of SEGA's music since summer of 2013!"

The music and sounds in a DS game are made with a bank of thousands of short .wav samples, which the game then runs through a kind of .midi file to make the music. I've managed to rip all of these samples from the Sonic Rush cartridge! There's files of instrument noises, drum loops, and those samples you're looking for - but because these are the raw "pieces" used to make the music, the samples are undistorted and totally isolated, which makes it a lot easier to identify the sounds (for example, one of the "ride on" samples is slower and slightly higher-pitched in the raw file than it is when played in the game's soundtrack - it actually sounds like a woman saying "right on!, instead of ride on). Every sound effect and voiceover in the game is in there, too. Help yourself if you want to dig through them/use them in your projects - they're already in the PC-friendly .wav format. And if someone could use the files to make a Sonic Rush soundfont, I will love you forever.

Click here for the 102 MB .zip file!

I'm well aware of the existence of those rips from the DS rom, but in there the samples have been manipulated already (pitch slapped up ridiculously, eg in Back 2 Back and Jeh Jeh Rocket).

The reason I'm hunting for these is because I want to hear how the original vocals themselves sounded and where Naganuma took them from, plus it's really nice to hear them not sliced up and without that horribly limiting DS sound compression.

  • 3 weeks later...

https://app.box.com/s/sgljb6x2sqvu1d2wdb66

So I threw together everything SEGA has sampled out of the X-static Goldmine sample pack. There might be more, but this is all I'm aware off and recognized at least.

There's stuff from Sonic CD, Sonic AdventureJet Set RadioJet Set Radio Future, Ollie King and Sonic Rush in here.

I actually might turn this into a generic SEGA sampling thread and revise the OP. It needs serious tidying up anyway, I've moved on from my days of being stupid and thinking SEGA sampled other songs. >_>

So in case anyone was interested:

X-Men Legends: September 2004 (6 seconds in)-

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVbQ1L87PBk

Shadow the Hedgehog: November 2005 (about 50 seconds in)-

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MS8MONoQu3c

Whether or not X-Men Legends is the origin of the sample, I don't know. It's just an observation

That video is mostly incorrect, stating that these samples come from TV shows and the like...

Also, I've found everything listed in here. I don't understand what you're getting at...

Also, I have found Bomber Barbara's samples. Just scroll up a tiny little bit to that post with all of the Rush stuff.

After analyzing the files in SonnikkuForever's sound filedump, I've found quite a few interesting bits of things, here's what I've dug out of it.

http://vocaroo.com/i/s0VktdxcGGiu

This sound falls in the folders where all the "Ride There, Ride On" clips are, Idunno whether it's a scream, or what, but it also appears in "Let Mom Sleep".

http://vocaroo.com/i/s04wHMFM8WJh

This "HEY!", falling into place with the "Back 2 Back" clips, was used in JSR's "Sweet Soul Brother".

http://vocaroo.com/i/s1PCh0d9C3sb

This "UGH!", placed in the "Ethno Circus" sections, also takes place in JSRF's most famous track, "The Concept Of Love".

http://vocaroo.com/i/s1q9AgrLbCjt

This "COME ON!" seems to be one of SEGA's most used, as it not only appears in "Get Edgy" and "Funky Dealer", but it goes all the way back to Sonic 3's Miniboss Theme!

http://vocaroo.com/i/s1PGs0EdgWLD

http://vocaroo.com/i/s1Y4VpboIITB

These two are kinda interesting, it seems as though Naganuma might have actually sampled his own work, as these stabs in "Get Edgy" appear in "Let Mom Sleep".

http://vocaroo.com/i/s1dPAfg2kjYA

If I'm not mistaken, this clip is the same one as a clip used in "Shape Da Future"?

http://vocaroo.com/i/s0bhuLOhCGAS

And for the finale, this reel of clips from "Right There, Ride On" if I remember correctly, is the same clip used in "Rock It On".

That 'scream' is actually a saxophone. It originates from some 80s hip-hop song (the name of which I forget right now), but I'm not sure where Naganuma sampled it from.

SEGA has a large thing for that "HEY" voice. It's in Sweet Soul Brother as you mentioned, as well as Machine Labyrinth from Rush Adventure and Skygrinder from Air Gear.

The "c'mon" is from Skip to my Loops as I mentioned before, it's all over the place. Sonic 3's miniboss, Funky Dealer, Get Edgy, tons of places.

I think those Get Edgy/Let Mom Sleep stabs actually had the "OH" baked into the sample and Naganuma just sampled the same pack. I suspect the same happened for the "HEY" and the "UGH".

That synth does sound pretty similar to Shape Da Future. Any clue as to what Rush song that's in?

And thanks for that reel of RTRO clips. I've always seen people say "rock it on x right there ride on otp", "rock it on for beta right there ride on", all kinds of things and the only similarity I've ever heard is that one blender-like sample.

Still, pretty interesting similarities.

Welp, after listening to the OST, and comparing the clips, the SDF Synth seems to be in Bomber Barbara, at about 57 seconds in.

Oh, and something I forgot to put here earlier, from Ollie King's Teknopathetic remix, ripped from GarageBand by a friend of mine: http://vocaroo.com/i/s1GlaJD1WB4E

Speaking of those two songs and Ollie King, TeknopatheticBomber Barbara and Too Fast seem to all sample the same synth bass loops. I'll try and pull up a comparison later as I'm a bit busy with college work at the moment.

This was also used in a Gabe Newell parody site on the internet if I'm not mistaken? Naganuma uses a lot of GarageBand loops, one of my friends found the synths from Jeh Jeh Rocket, one of the guitars from Get Edgy and that classic fiddle from Wrapped in Black (yes, the one also used in Grandia) alongside the brass hits that play during the "too black, too strong" intro.

I wish I could look into GarageBand's stuff myself, but the problem is I don't use a Mac, hah.

So I figured I'd stir up another sample reel from the one sample pack that everyone knows about, Norman Cook's Skip to my Loops.

https://app.box.com/s/ob1rjn6n4esqvhuak6n0

There's stuff from Jet Set Radio FutureOllie KingSonic Rush and Sonic Rush Adventure in here. I honestly don't think SEGA owned this thing until around the early 2000s. A few of these samples can be heard in Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix, too.

I'm only covering the packs SEGA has majorly sampled from with these things. I think I'll do Datafiles vol 2, RAPsody and Voice Spectral then call it a day, honestly.

I recognize the "ooh" from the James Brown song it came from, and the "aaaaaaAAAAAAAOOOOWWWWW" from various other things, mainly a mix on a local radio station, but I don't know where they and the "oh daaaaance" sample were used.

The "ooh" and "aaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAOOOWWWWWWWWWW" were used in JSRF's remix of I Love Love You.

The "hoo dance" (well, actually, just the "hoo") was used in Brother Goes Away from Ollie King.

Yeah, I'm stingy with noting samples. .w.

Dunno if anyone noted this one, Sonic Rush, Vela-Nova, during the first 5 seconds, the "Hoo" part of that sample plays.

Holy shit, I literally never noticed this! Can anyone confirm if this happens in the DS version as well or not, considering this is the Digital Remakin' version?

Welp, this is certainly interesting, this is a track from some Ps1/Ps2 game called "Bust A Groove", the song is called "2 Bad", listen in at about 1:36, sound familiar?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3Xn0jpSh-I

Now where have we heard THAT before?

Rock It On from Jet Set Radio.

That be from the Voice Spectral pack from Best Service. In particular the 14th sample to play in the 93rd track. What's interesting is that Sweet Soul Brother/Back 2 Back's "HEY" plays right after it in this pack, too.

Oh, something else I want to add, I've been working on this for a while, it's a pack of all the Jet Set Samples that people have managed to dig up, credits to all the known sample-hunters in the Text File added.

[Link redacted because the link here was really out of date]

if anyone has any to add that I missed, lemme know.

You're missing "LET ME HEAR YA SAY YO" and "That's very nice thank you" from Oldies But Happies, "C'MON!" from Funky Dealer and the "get up to get down" from Humming the Bassline.

OLDIES BUT HAPPIES

https://app.box.com/s/hezk1owv7f0p2pi6j73v

https://app.box.com/s/214kdhaiu59xp45r9daq

FUNKY DEALER

HUMMING THE BASSLINE

https://app.box.com/s/k87bat0cjlktox9suztv

("C'MON" is at the beginning, "get up to get down" is near the end)

Also, the Skip to my Loops "BREAKDOWN" isn't the Sneakman one, I don't think. The voice ends in a very lowered tone in there, whilst Sneakman's stays constant, it sounds more like "Breaktime" than anything else, honestly.

Also, I might put one of those packs together with Ollie King and Sonic Rush's stuff in too...

Oh, also, whilst this topic's active I'll drop something I made earlier today.

http://sweetsoulsweet.tumblr.com/post/89090096584/my-recreation-of-the-vocals-in-ethno-circus-from

I recreated Ethno Circus' vocals with the original uncompressed samples, Sonic's version of the song only. Thanks to Can of Nothing for ripping the original MIDI and sample banks from Rush as reference.

Well, I did it. This pretty much everything I know right here in this pack Naganuma-wise, ladies and gentlemen.

I know a lot more than this that's used by other SEGA composers. If anyone wishes I'll add them and turn this into an all-round SEGA sample pack but do note it'll most likely fly over 150 MB.

Where was "Get Down" used? I know the other part, 'Get Funky" was used in Let Mom Sleep, but where does the other one come in?
