SEGA sample origin discovery thread "Finding the DNA of SEGA's music since summer of 2013!"

Where was "Get Down" used? I know the other part, 'Get Funky" was used in Let Mom Sleep, but where does the other one come in?

That wasn't actually used, that part. It was a part of the original sample so I kept it in. Same reasoning as the "The young must know it, the old must know it" part of the Richard Nixon sample in Oldies But Happies.

Sorry for the double post, but I've found an issue with the pack, the Sax Squeal sample is broken. I try playing it and i can't hear a thing.

And another note, the famous "Amen Break" clip appears in the JSRF Remix of Sweet Soul Brother, so there's one to add.

I think the "Body Rock" sample is inaccurate. It's a different voice and slightly different lyrics from the one in Let It Go.

Strange, it works for me and should be a regular .WAV file. What audio player are you using?

And yeah, I heard about the Amen Break being used. I'll add that now.

I actually felt a bit inside that this would be said. The voice is in a very similar tone, but the lyrics are different. This one is:

So let's rock yo, non-stop yo, to the beat yo, the bodyrock yo

Let it Go is:

Ya wanna rock yo, non-stop yo, then here we go yo, I give ya what I gotta go or something like that.

I'll try looking further into the pack I found Funk to the Top's scratches in.

Again, sorry for posting so much in one day

I got it fixed, threw it in Audacity and exported it as an MP3, works fine now.

It's perfectly fine, hah. It's nice to actually be discussing samples with more than one person in this thread frequently for a change!

Ok, I literally just found this while listening to the Sonic CD JP Soundtrack, Wacky Workbench Good Future.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rBMhuaOiVU

About 12 seconds in, "(Something) Techno", wasn't this used in one of the Adventure games?

Nnnnnope.

This voice is saying "perfect tranquil, go" or something like that.

The voice in SA1 says "Hip-Hop, House, Techno".

I do believe that's the same voice generator, but like But First said, that isn't the same sample. SA1 says "HIP-HOP ("Trip-hop"? Not sure), HOUSE, TECHNO".

However... I won't lie that this voice used in CD does sound familiar. Hang on, I'm gonna go digging in the X-Static Goldmine again for a second...

EDIT: Track 53 on the second disc, sample 7. I believe this is the sample you're referring to, Carthage.

Yea, that's the same clip, and it must be the same Speech Generator because it says "Techno" the same way.

I wish I had the resources to buy all these sample packs, I really want to find more from Sonic CD like this, the Japanese OST, that is.

Can we rename this topic to "Hideki Naganuma Sample Origin" since most of the tracks in this topic is by Hideki Naganuma XD

Well you must be blind towards the last few posts and the other SA1 and CD content that's appeared in this topic. Do note it started off as a Naganuma-only topic at least and it's just evolving.

Alright, so I've been following this thread as well as searching for Sonic samples in other places for quite a while, and I've been compiling a list of all the samples I've found to sound correct. You can view the list here. Of course, be warned that there is some sample speculation from myself (particularly in the lower parts of the list), and it may very well just be plain poppycock.

See what I did there?

Tidal Tempest Past (JP) - "Stand by Me" by Ben E. King

Toxic Caves - "Pacific State" by 808 State

Area - Starlight Carnival - "Together" by Together

Lost Labyrinth themes - "Sky Troops" from Shadow the Hedgehog

Stardust Speedway Present (JP) - "Let It Go (Part Two)" by KC & the Sunshine Band

Where'd you get this from?

Where'd you get this from?

Well, that's a bit complicated.

To start with, the listings of "Stand by Me," "Together," and "Sky Troops" are just speculation by me. The bassline in "Tidal Tempest Present" (JP) is very reminiscent of "Stand by Me," "Area - Starlight Carnival" has a section around 0:22 (that repeats in later parts of the song) that immediately reminded me of a repeating melody in "Together" that kicks in at about a minute in, and there's a segment starting at 0:07 of "Sky Troops" that sounds quite similar to the Lost Labyrinth themes from Sonic 4: Episode I. Again, those are my own assumptions and may be coincidence.

I forget where I found out about the "Toxic Caves" sample, but it definitely sounds accurate, with the segment in "Pacific State" coming in around 1:24.

The "Stardust Speedway Present" (JP) sample was just from WhoSampled. The sample there can be found at around 0:11, while the segment in "Let It Go (Part Two)" comes in at around 1:16.

By the way, I'm curious, has anyone done a GBAMusRiper-style rip of Sonic Rush (all the game's music as MIDIs with a soundfont)?

Run Through the Speed Highway - "Super Bad" by James Brown

This "up and down and all around" is completely different to the one used in Speed Highway. The one Speed Highway used comes from the Masterbits RAPsody sample pack.

(What U Need)

"Like It Like This Like That" from Jet Set Radio Future

Also, this is completely new to me. Mind saying where you hear the similarity?

I am aware of the difference. It seems both WhoSampled and I assumed that it was lyrical inspiration rather than a sample, but apparently not. I'll update the list.

Just the scratch sound, which, in hindsight, was bad speculation on my part and was probably just a reuse of the sound rather than an actual sample. However, listening to "Like It Like This Like That" again, I noticed an instrument at around 1:29 that sounds remarkably similar to one used in "Ska Cha Cha" starting at 0:28. I'll update the list accordingly.

Alright, so a sample in Jet Set Radio actually led me to a sample in Sonic CD. I was looking through samples in "Everybody Jump Around," and came upon this connection: http://www.whosampled.com/sample/173776/Richard-Jacques-Everybody-Jump-Around-T-La-Rock-Jazzy-Jay-It%27s-Yours/

It instantly reminded me of "Wacky Workbench Present" (JP), though I figured that the sound had to have originated from an earlier song. Sure enough, I found this: http://www.whosampled.com/sample/118953/T-La-Rock-Jazzy-Jay-It%27s-Yours-Time-Zone-The-Wildstyle/

WhoSampled doesn't have any deeper listings for that particular sound, so at the moment, I'm inclined to believe that it either originated from that song or a sampling CD. I've updated the list to include Wacky Workbench's sample.

EDIT: Furthermore, I found another sample in Sonic CD, being "Tidal Tempest Good Future" (JP)'s sample of "Funky President" by James Brown. The sample in question may have also been used in "Aquarium Park Act 2" from Sonic Colors. I'll add both to the list.

Savannah Citadel - "Back 2 Back" from Sonic Rush

Sea Bottom Segue - "Save Point" from Kirby Super Star; "Hyrule Field Main Theme" from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Cutscene - Even a Rose Has Thorns - "Surrounded Sea" from Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness

Silent Forest Zone 1 - "Title Screen" from Super Mario Kart

For the former one I frankly have no clue what it's pointing at. I listen to Savannah Citadel Day and Back 2 Back all the time and I cannot hear a single similarity.

And regarding the others, I'm pretty sure we can cross that off to coincidence...

SONIC ADVENTURE:

Believe in Myself - "Bridge" from Sonic the Hedgehog (8-bit)

Not like I ever heard this myself, but this has been confirmed unintentional. Tons of people approached Jun about it on Twitter a while back and he stated that he has no clue what Bridge Zone even is.

What you're actually looking for is this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxqT8q04w2Q&t=4m52s

Whoa, that sounds like the exact drum loop! Thank you! Let me just update the list...

It's the guitar around 0:12, which matches the backing melodies of "Back 2 Back."

And regarding the others, I'm pretty sure we can cross that off to coincidence...

Yeah, I figured as much. The reason for my massive amount of speculations in Sonic: Lost World is that I noticed that almost every part of the soundtrack reminded me of other games and their respective styles (a list that you can view here). Long story short, I doubt any of them are really true, but I'm keeping them there just for completion's sake. On second thought, listening to the songs again made me realize how silly some of the comparisons actually were. I've removed several of the speculative Lost World listings accordingly.

Not like I ever heard this myself, but this has been confirmed unintentional. Tons of people approached Jun about it on Twitter a while back and he stated that he has no clue what Bridge Zone even is.

Well, there's no denying that the opening melodies of the songs sound the same. Besides, people have denied samples before (though generally, it's done to avoid copyright issues).

So, it appears Bokfresh from Jet Set Radio Future (composed by Richard Jacques :U) sampled a bassline loop from Zero-G's Total Funk sample pack... named "peeing down".

So I stirred up a random recreation. There's two keys this bassline loop is in, but since I don't know which Bokfresh used I went with the one in C.

The "set it again my boy selecta" sample originates from the Hallelujah pack by Best Service.

Grabbed an account on the forums more or less for this thread; sampling as an art form, be it of actual media, from sample CDs (most of which find their samples from actual media), or synths/drum machines has always fascinated me, and I love stumbling across sample sources, or a recurring sample throughout work, and digging to find out more about them.

I've been sorting through a few things from synthmania for my own sampling purposes, and came across a couple of cuts from Ueberschall's Easy Listening sample CD (track 1 and track 27 specifically), and I found a couple of interesting discoveries.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/l8t46tc9vzad4ux/Sonic%20Rush%20Samples%20For%20Dan.mp3

The reversed jazz loop from Wrapped In Black comes from track 27, and the "Casino Royale" voice comes from track 1. The versionnf Wrapped In Black used for the audio demo is the Digital Remakin' version, but I'm fairly certain it's in the in game version of the track too. You can hear the full tracks these samples came from, for the curious, here; http://www.synthmania.com/Easy_Listening.htm

Speaking of Haunted Ship; the synths bell sample used in it is indeed the same one from Techno Slam, but it isn't sampled from techno slam; it's lacking the acid bass backing in it that Techno Slam plays alongside the loop, and I've heard it in at least one other Miami bass styled song from around about the same period of time (and the famous DJ's Unite track, which DOES sample Techno Slam), so I'm inclined to believe it's a stock synth loop from a sample CD. Where to start looking, I have no idea.

One last thing by way of an introduction; someone a few pages back made reference to that hard hitting synth sound from Shape Da Future. I'm not sure if it's the source of the synth sound, but I do know another place it (or a synth sound very similar to it) crops up; The Bouncer (Housequake Mix) by Kicks Like A Mule:

http://youtu.be/uTiyQUffoh8 (it comes in right after the first vocal sample).

It wouldn't surprise me, mind, if this sound made it to a synthesizer via sampling at a later date, or on a sample CD through the same means, as a lot of synth pads, stabs, hits and chords from popular tunes in the rave scene wound up on sample discs and synthesizers and, consequently, many many songs. The hard synth hit from T99's Anasthasia is a fairly common example of that practice.
