Yeah, you'd be right about that. I do like the way the Story is shaping up though. As far as narrative is concerned, it looks promising.

At the same time, I'm going to bring up points of contention as and when I see them. If I see something I don't like, I'm going to point it out.

Good.  Rail sections in SA2 were terrible and the cause of many a cheap death.

Then don't have any. Rails being like Unleashed is literally on-rails gameplay where side-to-side movement and jumping is the only thing you have to do. Rails need to be more organically introduced to level design and need to be designed in a way, such that they don't cause cheap deaths. And they should definitely require more player input than they currently do. Having rails floating over giant death-chasms is a bad idea, regardless of whether you're using the SA2 system, Heroes system, Shadow system, 06 System or the Unleashed-Generations system.

Lava Mountain is about as creative of a name as most anything else this series has produced.

Bullshit. You're actually going to tell me with a straight face that Lava Mountain's name is creatively on par as Mushroom Hill or Casino Night?

If you can't tell this is sarcasm, it's sarcasm and you're too easy.

Damn shame too. I miss some of the unique names we've gotten out of the series.

I honestly think Sonic Team should take a stage, make its initial name based off a description of the stage (e.g Lava Mountain), and then just use a thesaurus to find different words meaning the same thing. It could lead to a bunch of unique, crazy names. Doesn't even need to make sense in the end.

EDIT:

For example;

Lava Mountain could turn into.....Magma Palisade or Magma Precipice. Sounds a whole lot more interesting doesn't it?

Windy Hill could turn into.....Windswept Ridge

Mushroom Hill.....Fungal Cliffs

And so on...

This series has come up with some amazing zone names though: BINGO Highway, Atomic Destroyer and Sandopolis come to mind. Granted, there's a much larger share of unoriginal ones: Green Hill, Casino Night, Red Mountain, Sky Deck, City Escape, the list goes on... so really, this isn't a change in the series when you think about it.

True, but it also makes things sound more epic.

Tell me if Melty Molten Galaxy is a cooler sounding name than Hell Prominence.

"Hell Prominence" is trying too hard. MMG doesn't need an epic name to be epic, it simply is.

I mean, would anyone take the name "Death Egg" seriously on its own? 'course not. But because of its role in the series it's become an important and evocative symbol. I would rather they worry about the level being good enough to make the name compelling, than trying to come up with a name "cool" enough to make the level seem "epic".

Good point, but that wasn't what I was getting at. Of course the focus is on the strength of the level, and it must come first. I meant that a cool name can add to an already great level.

Not that I mind Lava Mountain as a name though. I actually quite like it.

While the names are undoubtedly a bit bland and generic, they all suit their purpose well enough for distinguishing the different level tropes. And I suppose they can justify it story-wise, seeing as Lost Hex has presumably been... well, lost. The locations there probably haven't ever been given "proper" names by the indigenous critters, and it's not even as if they're fixed landmarks as Sky Road seems to prove, assuming it does turn out to just be bits and pieces of each world all coming together like a jigsaw.

The only name that really bugs me is Tropical Coast - not because it's bad or anything, just because it's bound to easily get confused with Tropical Resort.
