A gay art student has sparked outrage over plans to lose his virginity in front of a crowd of 100 people - in the name of art.

The Daily Mail reports: 'Clayton Pettet, 19, said he will have gay sex for the first time in a gallery for a project entitled 'Art School Stole My Virginity'.

'He said his 'performance art project' - followed by a question and answer session - will challenge the idea of sexuality.

'He is planning for his first full sexual encounter is set to take place before an audience of between 50 and 100 in a space in Hackney, London.

'Clayton and his partner will have protected sex and then ask the audience what they thought of the performance.

'Clayton, who has been planning the event for three years, said: "The key thing about performance art is that it should only be performed once, and this is the ultimate once-in-a-lifetime performance. I've held on to my virginity for 19 years, and I'm not throwing it away lightly. Basically it's like I am losing the stigma around virginity. I want the audience to see if anything has changed between me and my partner. Since culturally we do hold quite a lot of value to the idea of virginity I have decided to use mine and the loss of it to create a piece that I think will stimulate interesting debate and questions regarding the subject."'

This is pretty damn shocking and Clayton and his partner are pretty brave if they go through with it. While I understand what Clayton's trying to achieve, I don't think you can really present an honest look at how a couple may change after an intimate moment by doing it in public like that. Unless they both can truly forget the audience is there (unless they don't care the audience is there), then things could turn out very bad for what should be a special next step in their relationship.

How do I react to something like this? Sex in public is not a regular occurrence (as far as I'm aware, anyway...), no matter which sexuality the participants were, it'd shock me. I don't know what to say.

Well... I do wonder where this stands legally. Is there any way to avoid arrests for this? I would think this would class as indecent exposure just about anywhere.

He's got a really clever idea behind this overall, as he's basically trying to illustrate that there's actually nothing important about virginity and it's even more arbitrarily valued than a person's age.

This also shows how greatly varied the term art really is, rather than just referring to visual works. I will definitely give him credit for really pushing the boundaries of what it means to be artistic. Most modern forms of art don't really interest me at all (honestly if a meteorite flattened a modernist sculpture gallery in the middle of the night, I would probably praise God for His most magnanimous gift unto my eye sockets), but I can see some appeal in this; he's working to demystify virginity and sexual relations by extension.

What I'm really curious about is if this will be a ticketed show or one that he'd just spontaneously do. I'm hoping the former; that way only people who wanted to see it will, in which case I have no problem with it. Consent is an awesome thing!

Not the weirdest thing to show up in art galleries (what about corpses?) but certainly takes some guts to do it. Modern art is a highly silly world in general. I don't think outrage is justified, though, considering it is in a designated space with limited potential viewers, disclosed ahead of time. Oh and that all-important fact: it doesn't fucking hurt anybody. Kinda important to factor that in.

 

In a world in which almost everybody has sex and most media is geared toward sex appeal, the idea of sex being shocking is a bit ridiculous. People fuck, what a shocker.

Oh frickity frack, performance art. I've been through art school, specifically as a fine arts student, and was forced to sit through numerous perforamance bullshit like this during critiques. Twenty fucking minutes of people who can't cut it either as actors or artists pissing around and presenting bullshit statements about society or culture or (gag me) the "language of art." Look, maybe the kid has a point with whatever he's doing, and good for him he's found someone willing to have something so personal be put on display. I suppose it can be considered "brave" but all I'm seeing is more of the same bullshit "shock art" every idiot in art school tries to shove out (I still have unforunately vivid memories of a performance piece in which someone rolled around on the floor for twenty minutes and threw up--yes, this was a piece for class. Don't get me wrong, the guy is nice enough as a person, doesn't mean I care for his work, a mutual feeling everyone in my class had about me).

This is more or less my view. I don't think he and his partner are just going to waltz in, strip naked, and proceed. This sounds like it's going to be as planned, scheduled, and knowingly attended just the same as any exhibit or show. If people want to see two people making love... well, more power to them, I guess. That's the whole idea of this it looks like, to try and break the many taboos on sex by forcing us to re-evaluate if they hold any value, or if we just follow them because it's how society's always been.

I'm very surprised by the news but I do greatly respect to the fella and his boyfriend although I'm unsure what's going to happen in legal terms though. Public sex is the idea that everybody does not approve of so it is risky. Interesting to watch though.
