Isn't Marza also involved in the movie? I know they are not a well known company like Blur Studio. However, They did work on a lot of Sega and Sonic related stuff, including that Unleashed short. It's listed on their website.

https://www.marza.com/en/news/article/717/

I remember the co-producers of the movie did visited Marza a few years ago. I also remember they visited there a few times. I think these are the ones.:

Marza was involved when Sony was still making the movie, but to my knowledge it's Blur Studio handling the CG now.

If they are no longer involved in the movie, then, why Marza was mentioned on the news about the movie agreement with Sega and Paramount that was posted on the studio's website? This is what it's say on the website. I know this is from last year, but they might still be involved in the movie.:

Live-action CG animation film represents next step in evolution of Sonic the Hedgehog IP and Will Premiere in the United States on November 15, International Rollout to Follow

BURBANK, Calif. –– February 22, 2018 –– SEGA Holdings Co., Ltd. today announced that SEGA of America, Inc., has reached a final agreement with Paramount Pictures to co-produce a Sonic the Hedgehog feature film, set for theatrical release beginning in the United States on November 15, 2019, then rolling out internationally to markets around the world.

This move represents an important next-step in the expansion of the Sonic the Hedgehog IP, bringing the character to new audiences globally. As part of the IP strategy for Sonic the Hedgehog, SEGA Group has been working to expand this character beyond the video game market to become an entertainment franchise. Recently, Sonic has appeared as an animated character on television, consumer products, console and mobile games, and more.

“I am very honored that our companies, SEGA and MARZA, have this incredible opportunity to partner with Paramount Pictures for this production, which will bring Sonic to the big screen for the first time. Since he was first introduced to the world 26 years ago, Sonic has continued to grow in popularity as part of our core strategy to focus on video games. In addition to video games, this provides SEGA with a fantastic opportunity to share Sonic with everyone and we can’t wait to reveal more to eager audiences in the future,” said SEGA Holdings Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Haruki Satomi.

Paramount Pictures will work closely with SEGA of America to bring Sonic to the big screen, said Jim Gianopulos, Chairman and CEO, Paramount Pictures.

“We are incredibly excited to work with SEGA to bring this iconic property and character to audiences around the world,” said Gianopulos. “We look forward to our partnership on this great venture.”

Planned for a worldwide release showcasing both live-action and CG animation elements, the feature film will be the first time Sonic has been adapted for the big screen. Developing the project since its inception as a producer as well as a production house, MARZA Animation Planet Co., Ltd., owned by SEGA Group, will be joined by an assembly of high-profile talent.

The film has signed on notable industry veterans including:

  • Producer Neal H. Moritz from Original Film Inc. (”Fast and Furious” series)
  • Director Jeff Fowler (Blur Studio, Academy Award® nominee for 2005 Best Animated Short Film “Gopher Broke.”)
  • Executive producer Tim Miller (director of the Marvel/Fox feature “Deadpool” and owner of animation and CG production company Blur Studio)

“I’m thrilled to be partnered with SEGA and to have such an incredible and supportive home for Sonic with Jim and Paramount,” said Moritz.

You know, Blur Studio worked on Shadow and 06 right? Two of the most hated games in the franchise right? So is it really a surprise if you stop and think about it that we are getting humans, alien origin stories, military conspiracies, and lack of really any of the things that people come to Sonic for? Really, it finally hit me how they can be fans of Sonic and make choices I don't like. It honestly kind of sucks to have that type of epiphany now of all times, but suddenly a lot of what I see going on with this film makes a lot more sense. Boy though, in a way it really does make it that much worse for me...

... On the bright side though 06 had a few really awesome cutscenes so pretty good chance that the action will indeed be top notch. A real shame about everything else putting me off though.

Food for thought; mostly negative thought.  I must say that it shouldn’t be hard to do a fun robot design.  They’re among the first things many people learn to make in 3D, they can look like just about anything because they’re artificial, and can be memorable due to all the crazy shapes, many Sonic games have very iconic enemies, but then there’s this generic science fiction sludge.  Maybe these robots will be well-rendered, modeled and animated, but they’re so dreadfully generic that the effect is lessened—and more classic badniks could have all those qualities, too.

Also while I welcome people to envision different versions of a property, based on what I hear everyone saying about Robotnik these designs don’t feel right.  I’m not going to defend Sonic 2006 much, or say that it was right to try for a more serious tone with a more serious Eggman, but with that goal in mind, the more serious, no-nonsense badniks make sense.  They “work the way they’re supposed to”, certainly a great deal more than many things in that game!  However, this movie’s premise, though I likewise won’t take a stand on it, is pretty obviously comedic.  Jim Carrey is expected, and reported, to be playing a FUN Robotnik.  His performance here has been likened to his performance as the Riddler.  That is not the sort of villain who is strictly utilitarian; a fun Robotnik should make fun robots.

They could even have made scenes based on that factor that fit the film’s vibe based on everything I have read and heard.

Quote

Soldier: Sir, I don’t see why your robot meant to gun down that alien has to look a pink frog wearing sunglasses.

Robotnik: Because I’m the genius who can make these robots, and you’re just the gofer who stands here and watches me make them!  When you get the know-how to make super-advanced robots, then you can make your own boring ones that look like lawnmowers with guns attached!  Until then, shut up or face the wrath of the pink frog’s retractible flail!

Blur are very talented, they make excellent CG.

Sadly movies these days seem to think good CGI makes for a good movie. They forget that writing has a bit bigger and more lasting impact.

Speaking objectively here, that scenario pretty much sounds like typical Sonic The Hedgehog fare.

It is...the bare minimum of what should be expected from a basic action scene. No one said Sonic can't run on the moon, him destroying a tank is baby Sonic 1 level stuff.

If Sonic can shred tanks to pieces like they're nothing, then what is supposed to give him a run for his money?

Literally anything else.

Fast paced action will kill him.

There's no actual robots in this movie. Just armored drones and tanks.

Guys! I think we are getting a trailer this week. Detective Pikachu has its official premier (not a typical early screening like what it's gotten recently) on May 3rd. We might even get it that exact day.

Paramount is debuting a trailer for 'Crawl' this week, so I wouldn't get your hopes up. (Is it normal for studios to release more than one trailer per week?)

Next week most likely.

I don't know much about them, so someone correct me if I'm wrong, but a quick google says Blur Studio is a production studio. It seems they were only involved in producing the CG cutscenes for the games you mentioned, which means they would have had zero influence on the storytelling choices of any Sonic game they worked on. They would have designed their robots and environments based on whatever the lead artists at Sonic Team wanted to be in the game.

I probably was a bit to indirect with why I was mentioning Blur Studio and it's relation to the plot of the movie through their work on Shadow and 06 so please allow me to rectify that.

So the other day @CaptainRobo spoke a little about the movie's producer (Tim Miller of Dead Pool fame) and Jeff Fowler (Tim's long tie friend) and how they worked at Blur Studio during production of Shadow and 06's CGI even providing some screen caps and a video to highlight their work.

So, I'm going to talk a little about the director, while we waited for that trailer to come. Jeff Fowler is Tim's longtime partner at Blur Studio. However, he is not that well known. They both previously work on some cutscenes for Sonic 06 and Shadow the Hedgehog. He previously work on the animation research and development for Where the Wild Things Are. The only film he directed before was an short animated film called Gopher Broke. The short was released in 2004. It was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film on the same year. Tim Miller also work on the short.  The movie was about an gopher who hatches a clever plan to get a quick snack, but discovers that even the best laid plans can go udderly awry. So, yea this is the story. It's available on YouTube, if you want to watch it. I kinda mixed on what he is doing with the Sonic movie, which is his first feature film that he directed. However, I hope he can make it a decent movie to watch.

Now this brings me back to my little moment and drawing the two together. Though they are not the writers, the most visible producer and the director of the movie's history with the franchise is with an alien hedgehog, government involvement, deep relationships between a hedgehog and a human, and leaning heavily in the realistic direction with almost no colorful and whimsical elements. Now look at the Sonic movie where you have an alien hedgehog, a deep relationship between a hedgehog and a human, government involvement, and a heavy insistence on realism with almost no color or whimsical elements. It's a little jarring really seeing the similarities, especially for me since I still found both Shadow and 06 palatable despite their obvious problems where as the movie has gone far done the rabbit hole at this point with what we know.

Of further note though, I find myself wondering even more the need to copy the Flash to demonstrate Sonic's speed when the cutscenes For Shadow as well as Sonic's opening and ending cutscenes in 06 along with Shadow and Silver's openings show that they already know how to demonstrate these characters speed. I guess though since the whole electrical discharge is a part of the movie they needed to ripoff the Flash whole sale for their plot. It's also a cheep excuse to give Sonic his iconic shoe's at the movie's end as a nod to the hyper friction resistant shoes of the Kintobor backstory as a way to deal with eth static electricity problem.

They probably saw one of the armored drones and assumed it was a robot.

That guy probably saw a pre-viz version of the robots. After all, the Sonic he saw was unfinished. People who saw the trailer compared them to Transformers so we'll likely get something a little more interesting than flying drones

Also if you doubt this is real. The shape of the thing he's sat in looks A LOT like this object that was photographed on a set for the movie.

If I try really hard to find something I can see something that makes me think of Eggman, but otherwise no. Looks more like a villain from those really cheesy live action kids movies I use to see commercials for all the time back in the day. I probably shouldn't have lazed around this morning and worked on my story blog because if the trailer is really dropping tomorrow...

Boy, I don't think I've experienced trepidation and anxiety about anything Sonic like this before. Usually it's pure excitement with a hint of pessimism but this film... Boy oh boy this film.
