I feel so sorry for Ohshima-san. A Sonic design for a movie should never make the original creator feel like this:

That edit just says roger rabbit cartoon. They were trying to go with a more realistic approach than a game character model straight from the game verse.

Which was a bad call from the start. Sonic is a cartoon. He was designed to be one. Naoto Ohshima and Yuji Naka, the fathers of Sonic, said that. There's no such thing as realistic Sonic. You're either realistic, or you're not Sonic.

If they didn't wanted to lift the model straight from the game, fearing that it would look too much like a talking and walking action figure, at least keep the same proportions, the same silhouette, like Detective Pikachu.

But don't do that. Never do that.

Does anyone here really believes that looking out of place is worse or the same as looking ugly as heck? It's a CARTOON character. It will ALWAYS look out of place. So they might aswell make it look good, cute, nice... anything but what they did. Even worse, they decided that Sonic is an ALIEN in this movie, so there's no reason why it should look like it "belongs".

They fucked up, man. No excuse.

I'm sure Paramount are just happy that the trailer is almost 20 million in less that 3 days.

It already got more views in 1 day than their trailer of Gemini Man (that stars Will Smith) did in 1 week, so I'm sure they're really happy. And if that's the case then this really reinforces the idea that they don't give a damn about Sonic's design, he was obviously made that way on purpose to get a lot of reactions from people. No such thing as bad publicity, they say.

See all those reaction videos on Youtube? If Sonic didn't look horrible these videos wouldn't exist.

This movie is definitely going to make a lot of money, or at least make back it's $90 million budget. I really hope they don't do a sequel, but it seems inevitable.

If the movie is decently funny and sonic games do not follow this direction going forward, I'd be fine with that. When all we had was the "jacked sonic" silhouette months ago I was worried, but seeing it in motion calmed me down a bit. The movie seems like it has enough ingredients to positively surprise people, at least in a minor way, if people can be open minded about it and realize it's not going to change anything about what they come to the franchise for long term.

But seems like I'm in the minority in the sonic community on this one.

Well yes because most of us realize this is a mere cash grab movie and nothing more, you are apparently fine with any old horseshit given to you.

If this movie had a walking pile of cow dung in it I guess that would be okay with you.

Face it this is just shit faced Hollywood at it again, another shitty live action video game adaptation along the lines of Double Dragon or the Mario brothers movie but the added crap tastic live action cartoon aspect like the Live action Garfield or live action Alvin and the chipmunks.

Me at this stage I at least hope for something on the quality of the 1994 Street fighter movie and while that movie isn't very good at least its funny in its own respect.

I hope Carry channels the spirit of Raul Julia at least

This is really embarrassing to be honest, but I don't think anybody in Paramount cares.

He's just being stereotypical Jim Carrey. I wouldn't expect anything we haven't seen before.

Eh Carrey can be a good actor, my second favourite movie is the Truman show where he gives a great performance.

Sure he at first acts like typical Jim Carrey but at the end he becomes a more well rounded actor.

The number 23 is also a great film, making Carry very menacing and downright horrifying.

Yes, but this is neither of those films. It's a low budget action film aimed at kids.

Why do so many fans in this fandom do this. What's horeshit to one may not be to another. I have coworkers kids in my office that are talking about this. Some seemed interested but noting concrete.  but for them they could very much like it and want to see more. Just like many enjoy ttg. There is no need to sit and say they wanting to see this is just accepting any crap given to them if it's what THEY like.

Yeah but i still have a feeling he is going to steal this movie much like he did Batman Forever, or the Cable guy for that matter.

Meh this is why we have the smurfs movie you know.... low standards.

At best this is bargain basement $3 bin material nothing more.

Its like carrying a torch when you are head deep in pig shit, there is no defending this I'm sorry.

The only thing I like here so far is Carry but even that is pushing it

I'm just trying to point out that Jim Carrey is playing heavily on nostalgia in the trailer (which is likely what he's been directed to do), rather than putting in the kind of effort that Raul Julia did with Bison. It's likely that we've already seen some of the best stuff too...

Perhaps, but hey if this is typical Jim Carry i am actually fine with this as he can be very fun even in his worst roles.

He is still a utter delight in the live action How the Grinch stole Christmas movie, that movie is also pig shit but man he is just eating the movie for breakfast like green eggs and ham and that alone makes that movie put its head above the pig shit.

Sure most of the body is still submerged but its still all the better for it.

Yea, I can't make the edgy PG-13 blockbuster justification anymore because this movie is clearly aimed at small children. And that weakens Tim Miller's excuse for Sonic looking realistic. If your audience is children who don't care about aesthetics and realism, why are you trying to make the character realistic? A cartoony design would have worked a lot better with the type of movie they're trying to make

Interesting

I doubt they'll be able to fix so much. There's so many things wrong about this design that they won't do a lot besides minor tweaks.

Now if that is true good on them for realizing the design sucks after the backlash.

I have no ill will at the designers here, CGI isnt as easy as it sounds but at the same time they should have known better.

Yeah I dont think they will be that drastic in the changes this long into production and saying rthe film is going to be out november.

They would have to crunch real hard and i rather not have them do that.

If you like the design and/or the film, great.  You can explain without insulting people's tastes or intelligence.

Thanks!

Fair enough then, but honestly I dont see why anyone would bother with this movie outside of something to shut the kids up with

They might delay the movie to 2020

I certainly hope so

The trailer is far from perfect, but nearly 400k dislikes? I mean, it's not THAT bad people.

But it is nice to see that 48 hours later, the trailer is still #1 trending on YouTube, even above Detective Pikachu!

Also the amount of likes, while overshadowed by dislikes, are still pretty impressive. 248K likes is no small number. And that's not counting the amount of likes on other channels like Paramount UK, Furious Trailer, Kinocheck, Accesstrailers, etc.

Dislikes must be illegitimate, likes must be legitimate.  Well, it's an interpretation.

This is beginning to sound like the live-action Thunderbirds movie. It was far removed from the original source material, and basically looked like a Spy Kids movie. Most of the Tracy family was stuck in space for most of the film while they had Alan Tracy (astronaut of Thunderbird 3 in the TV series) as a kid, fighting off the advances of the Hood and two bumbling Hoodlums alongside a kid Tin-Tin and a young son of Brains. Also it looked like a product placement film for Ford (something that even the director Jonathan Frakes admitted), since all the vehicles were Fords. That was because FAB1, Lady Penelope's car, was a Ford rather than a Rolls-Royce

The thing in @CaptainRobo 's post about SEGA being shut out reminds me of how Gerry Anderson, the creator of Thunderbirds, was shut out of being a creative consultant because there were enough creative people on the payroll. When Anderson finally got to see it, he called it "the biggest load of crap I have ever seen in my entire life". Relatively speaking, apart from the language used, he prefered Team America: World Police more.

I could relate to those who had been waiting for Sonic to make his first full length big screen appearance. Thunderbirds was and still is a big thing for me. In terms of televisual entertainment, Thunderbirds and lots of other Gerry Anderson works are the biggest thing for me these days. Thunderbirds already had two puppet movies back in the 60s which flopped (like Sonic has that OVA which was the closest thing to a Sonic movie at the time), but knowing of the existance of a Thunderbirds live-action movie was pretty exciting to me. That movie had a song written by Busted! called "Thunderbirds Are Go", and the band were at their prime at the time. I used to watch the music video to that on the free music channels all the time. It was so hype everytime I saw it. That single went to number one and was their last number one to date.

So some could imagine what I felt like when I went to the cinema to finally see one of my favourite shows make its live-action big screen debut. Wow

Aaaand at the time it was OK. My 15 year old self wasn't seriously impressed with it, and now I wouldn't break my heart if I never watched it again. Its gotten worse over time. Its just not a Thunderbirds movie. I'd seriously consider the puppet movies "Thunderbirds Are Go" and "Thunderbird 6" are better movies for the franchise because it has International Rescue doing what they do best, attempting epic rescues.

I was just thinking about the Thunderbirds movie earlier, actually; a movie for which, on reflection, I understand why they made a lot of the decisions that they did, but wow was the execution awful.  But they did get one thing right: They didn't mess with the machines.  They didn't play down the cartooniness of the designs or make them more edgy and realistic; a few tweaks here and there, but overall same silhouette, same vibrant colour schemes - same design overall, instantly recognisable.  It's right there in the title, Thunderbirds; and moreover, I'm sure they sensed that what they were making was ultimately a partially toyetic product and that historically toys of the Thunderbirds had done very well.

Meanwhile, in the Sonic movie, we have ugly humanoid Sonic, and boring, grey hunks of machinery.  I'm no fan of a purely commercialistic venture, but you'd have thought they'd at least want to get it right for the toy sales.

I dunno. This seems like a bad kinda bait/damage control. Like, "Sure, we'll fix the design...in the sequel! See you at the theaters, everyone! :)"

Maybe I'm horribly off base here and maybe they really are taking the feedback into account to make changes to the film. But sadly, the design would only fix one of many problems with it. There's still just about everything else.

Maybe, but considering things as they are i will take damage control for now.

If they do edit Sonic then great, sure it still wont fix the movie but at least the main Sonic model wont be so ugly.

Boy this eats at me so much. It's not that I don't see it, but rather that it goes so against how I perceived Sonic as a kid. Sonic wasn't one of the gang, he was that cool teenager we all wanted to be like. We weren't supposed to relate with him, we were supposed to be enamored with what he was and wonder how to be like that ourselves.

Its much like how archie characters used to do it. Teen characters trying to appeal to children because they are supposed to be someone aspiring or someone you could relate to. For example while I never wanted to be like sonic, characters like shadow I related to on some level because I had gone though things. Standard stuff , pretty common, TMNT does it, sailor moon does it. Its very VERY standard.

So for someone to not get this, when its very apparent and written all over the character, seems like a pretty big woopsie

What if they changed him to look like this. And make the shoes look closer to the classic. That was one element that shouldn't have changed. There are Nike shoes that look like the classic buckle shoes
