It's a good move, they are confident in their product And they know it will be ready on time, at the same time they want to avoid big competition. Although Bond will be delayed and Mulan comes out later too. Nice!

Wonder Woman is probably the biggest competition, a strong second week will be cutting into the same demographic.

Week 2 Probably no big audiance crossover with those.

Week 3 Is nothing, outside of Dark Phoenix/New Mutants theres no Fox Marvel stuff in production.

Week 4 Frozen 2 will be huge but by this point Sonic will have made the bulk of what it will make, worst that can happen is it kills the films late legs.

Lets be honest everyone.  Its likely that the majority of us here is going to see Sonic the day of its release correct?  If the movie is going to be successful, it needs to be a packed theatre.   Take as much friends as possible, even if they "LOL Sonic sucks" and wanna watch a trainwreck.  So does competition really matter as long as this film is on the big screen somewhere?  Plus from various interviews posted they wanna turn this into a on-going franchise with spin-offs and such. Im sure the parents who are Sonic fans would want to take their kids to this.  Im expecting this to break even opening weekend easily, especially for a holiday release.

I'm not sure if this has been posted already, but I stumbled across this Ladysmith Council Meeting (from June) where Abraham Fraser, (who works for Paramount) talks about what he has planned for the Sonic movie.

Most of the information is stuff we already know, but he does mention at one point that Sonic will be AN ALIEN in this movie. He also mentions there will be an interior scene filmed at an Inn, and there will be a 'tearjerker moment'

Interesting.

Edit: Sonic discussion starts at 3:03

Knew he would be. What with the whole government chasing him, I wonder if we're gonna get an "ET Phone Home" type deal. On the flipside, with Sonic being an alien - Robotnik is almost certainly going to be a human from earth. I just want to know how he gets his hands on technology so much more advanced than the rest of the world, allowing him to take over

Strange, nobody noticed this as the video was uploaded on June. Probably because it was unlisted.

What Tails Channel is getting at there. He's using ET as analogy because both ET and this movie will feature an extraterrestrial being chased by the government. It's common sense that didn't need to be explained and I dont understand why some are freaking out over the notion of an alien Sonic when we knew the Sonic X route was most likely as soon as the live action was announced

You already know it, some "fans" that overreact at everything will always jump right into a negative conclusion as quick as Shadow using Chaos Control.

I find it interesting if it's about Sonic being chased by the government and stop Eggman's masterplan, deal with both things. It's tough to get it right. But I have faith in this movie.

BTW, I guarantee about eye candy, ultra-hyper-awesome CGI from Marza and Blur. I'm sold for CGI alone!

I'm not surprised about the use of two world, and not unhappy either (not just because I like this setting). The alien/from another world route is the more logical for the movie, and I like the idea of having the same basic concept for the Sonic universe in every canon (and differentiating them with other points). What's funny is that is might be the first time where every adaptation of Sonic will have a really similar setting like that xD

I wonder if the fact that they are more leaning toward two world (tbh even if it date 2010, it's only recently that it's really affecting the universe… even if it might be because it's only now that they are doing a game with a real story) in the canon is related to the movie project.

I still believe the animal world doesn't exist in the movie, which is why Green Hill became the hero town, this means Sonic is likely an experiment, maybe created by Robotnik, a la Crash Bandicoot.

I'm concern about Sonic being Eggman(Robotnik)'s creation because that'd ruin Sonic origin as a hedgehog born in Christmas Island.

I'd love him being an alien from another planet/universe/dimension or being an anthropomorphic already on Earth but hide from human for decades.

I'd personally like Sonic to be from Earth, just some uncharted island unpopulated by man, then for whatever reason, he journeys to the town of Green Hills.

Eggman better not be an 'alien' either. How would the ARK, Gerald & Maria work if Eggman is from a planet of furries?

(Hmm, come to think of it, how did Sonic X handle that? I know there was an SA2 adaptation at some point, but the show clearly established in the first episode that Eggman lived on another planet)

Sonic is an alien being in the movie from another planet. I wouldn't be a fan of them going this route because introducing any other characters in sequels would be difficult. With Sonic as an alien, you still have the entire mythos of the franchise condensed into his planet. The emeralds, Sonic's friends, Angel Island, Green Hills Zone etc. All of it on his planet.

Yeah, Eggman was from Sonic's world in that show. I think what happened was, Eggman and Sonic were fighting over the Chaos emeralds and one of them accidentally used Chaos control and transported them all to Earth. Even though it made little sense how a human being was living his world of humanoid animals

Yes, but what confuses me is if Eggman comes from a planet populated entirely by animals, HOW did he have a Grandfather & cousin living on Earth? Did Sonic X ever explain that?

I gave up on the show after episode 26. The 4kids dub was terrible imo.

Yes, he discovers he is from our world in season 2. You should watch the japanese version subtitled, because it's underrared and worth it IMO.

Oh ok. What episode does he discover this?

That video from what I've read also has Fraser saying this bit at 3:03 in the video:

"The story is kind of lot like E.T., there’s a small town that comes to together to help the Sheriff (Tom Wachowski) save the alien from the bad guys, that are chasing after him. It’s very heartwarming and I’ll think it’ll be a big hit."

Gotta say, it sounds like Monster Trucks 2: Hedgehog Boom-galoo is shaping up to be an incredible film!

Didn’t Iizuka say that there are two worlds in the Sonic series? He mentioned this in an interview, an year ago?

It used to be that Eggman was the sole human. Starting with Sonic Adventure, we're seeing more and more humans show up in the stories. Where are they all coming from?

Iizuka: The world that Sonic lives in and the world the humans live in are separate worlds. But, some of the canon games do have Sonic and humans together, and part of that is based on what world is being portrayed when the game is developed. There are kind of different worlds that do exist and sometimes there's some crossover.

Sounds wayyy more like the incoming Bumblebee movie than Monster Trucks. It sounds like they want a Steven Spielberg Amblin-esque vibe.

I'm totally fine with them doing the whole E.T. thing, it makes perfect sense to me for them to go that route with Sonic in a live-action setting.

I really really REALLY hope that other Mobians make some sort of appearance in the movie, at least Tails, Knuckles, and/or Amy. If that doesn't happen, it won't be a deal breaker or anything for me... but man, I'd love to see them in this~

We may see them in the opening scene showing the events that lead up to Sonic ending up on Earth. Kinda like Man of Steel's intro:

Maybe a 6 or 7 minute intro set entirely on Mobius
