Pretty much the entirety of Sonic X. Sonic Adventure starts with him relaxing by a pool. It's not unheard of for him to just kick back when he isn't actively fighting.

Nice, so he likes to kick back by the pool and relax. I like them chill vibes.

Sonic has a streak of laziness when he has nothing to do and it sounds like they are pulling from different media forms for his characterization here. Sounds to me this might be in the vein with X Sonic more, the laid back guy who springs into action whenever anything is afoot.

Makes me wonder what incarnation of Eggman they have in mind here.

I like the sound of that Sonic.

Well probably the Adventure games too, after all wasn't most of the 1st season based around those 2-games? Or did it overlap into season 2 a little?

Yup. But so far what I've noticed

- Sonic not being native to Earth

- Sonic being chased by the authorities

- Sonic being a juvenile/immature and lazy

- Eggman (likely) being from Earth

When you put it that way, it really is Sonic X.

Well that pretty much settles it, I guess it is going to be like Sonic X. I just hope they learned from the criticism that Sonic X got and increase the Sonic character focus. Of course as far as we know there's just Sonic and Eggman. Which I get why they'd want to start with them two, but at least have more than 2 Sonic characters (this can include Chaos and Metal Sonic as they don't need voices, but Metal and Choas 0 would probably need motion capture for their CG due to their size).

I wouldn't expect Chaos and Metal Sonic, as much as I want them, they are not a priority right now... but definitely make some interesting material for sequels.

Eggman is the main villain here... obviously.

Sonic's personality is a variety of things though, he isn't just lazy, he's been described in a lot of ways:

- A juvenile delinquent

- An hyperactive Bugs Bunny

- Irreverent (which is Sonic's best trait, for me)

- Lazy

The last trait also seems to be present in a lot of Sonic incarnations, so I'm okay with that, it's safe to assume he will be a lot of things in the movie, not just lazy, and this makes me relieved.

What I'm not liking about the movie is the abundance of human characters, and not many game characters. I can understand not having Knuckles and Amy (although it doesn't make much sense), but how can you do the movie without Tails?

This movie overall seems to be taking the most inspiration from Sonic X

I don't know, I think it's more that both took the obvious and logical steps necessary when as a matter of form you don't have good gameplay to lean on and have to manufacture a new source of appeal and relatability beyond surface-level nostalgia.  The predominant element in that is the introduction of humans as major characters, the same step taken in Adventure 2 and '06 when the developers seemed to become ashamed of their origins and medium and were trying desperately to be taken seriously in the same way as a Hollywood movie; only Unleashed really approached the idea with a modicum of self-awareness, though it was never the element which drew much attention.  With that in mind, consider:

- The logical step to take if your easily relatable setting is Earth, our Earth, with humans as the main characters and Sonic as a novel outsider;

- The logical implication of the previous step, but more importantly it's a standard underdog trope which ties into the presentation of Sonic as a character with "attitude," a born rebel, while evoking the game origins as a character battling against technologically-equipped human forces;

-Also ties into the rebel aspect, but the laziness is more significant in that it makes it easier to establish a status quo setting, a standing location with which viewers can become familiar and develop a level of attachment to; you might draw a contrast to the status quo of the early comics and cartoons, where the early western canon of Robotnik ruling the world was both an extension of his presentation in the games and created a suitable long-term goal for an episodic narrative - although here there's a shared element with Robotnik apparently being an element of the government.  (The irony of the fastest thing alive standing still and waiting in one place while the villain who spends most of his time sitting down is the one doing the pursuing, an inversion of the games, is of course brushed under the carpet.)  If you've accepted a premise where Sonic isn't an adventurer and are writing your story around that, then making him lazy not only allows you to achieve that stasis but also ties in with the previously-presented aspects of his characterisation;

-Again, the logical step to take if you've introduced Earth and humans as we know them; it'd be overcomplicated and redundant to suggest that there are other humans on another Earth when that's not the point of the conflict.

The thing you have to bear in mind is that the people making this movie don't actually like Sonic, and are trying their hardest to construct a vision which has nothing to do with the games.

That's not really true or respectful towards the crew who is behind the movie. There are various classic easter eggs like Green Hills, Casino Night (working title... for some reason), Robotnik, rings being relevant to the plot, I know they are just names and small stuff but they are still references to the classic series, at least they did study a bit of Sonic.

Obviously the movie is intended for casual viewers who do not know Sonic, because that's the largest audience and they want to appeal to everybody in order to make the movie a success. But there are also references to the games, for the fans, at least that's what I noticed. So it wouldn't hurt to focus a bit on Sonic and his friends. I'd be okay with 50/50 between game characters and humans (not counting Eggman for the latter). I'm kind of relieved that the writers said "it was important for us to focus on Sonic as the main character". So at least there is that...

Has Sonic been mentioned as "An hyperactive Bugs Bunny" ? I have not heard that quote before. Can you give me the source please. Thank you.

It was in a Hashtag show report from the original site that first broke the news about Tom. They said Sonic meets Tom during a Highway speed chase and Sonic is a hyperactive, off the walls hedgehog.

Super Bowl would be the perfect time to debut a trailer or at least first look considering the huge amount of viewers. Would be a great way to get exposure out there. And Paramount has done Super Bowl spots the Bay TMNT/Transformers films as well the Spongbob movie.

I didn't think about that, it does happen to fall into the expected time-frame for a trailer release. Spongebob got a trailer there? I don't remember seeing one for the 2nd movie.

Aren't  Super Bowl spots really expensive or something like that?

Pretty much the most expensive 30 second spot money can by. It coveted for its guaranteed large audience and its probably the only TV market where people get excited and look forward to the commercials. A few companies are hallmarks of the event and buy up space every year - but other companies are either priced out or determine that the same 5 odd million dollars could do more good in a targeted marketing campaign.

It basically comes down to, do you want a 30 second gig that everyone will see, but compete with the best commercials of the year for attention,  or you could take half that money and ensure your ad is seen practically everywhere else.

I bet we will be getting our first trailer of the movie at the beginning of next year, maybe on the Super Bowl?

Not on the Super Bowl.

If anything, they'll release their trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog with their batch of trailers for other movies including this one. If it's a star franchise that's currently relevant, making millions every day, and everyone knows of it, like Star Wars or Marvel, then it's fine with a Super Bowl spot. Otherwise, what's the point? Not all people will be into it, and others will tune out.

Also, why in the HELL is everyone talking marketing campaigns? I mean, sponsorships and product placement, why would this be a topic? This is still a movie, the main focus is that this is a Sonic movie, and I find it dumb that we're talking about the marketing plan like it has several hundreds of millions of dollars in the budget. Never have I seen talk of the marketing plan for the games, other than the poor portrayal of information.

The first trailer will be attached to Avengers 4 or Godzilla 2.

How do you know that? I don't even see that happening because Avengers and the MCU films isn't even distributed by Paramount anymore, that is now Disney's part. And Godzilla 2 is from Warner Bros. So how is the Sonic movie trailer releasing with those 2-films that are Not even distributed by Paramount Pictures?

Where have you been hiding then. Sega's marketing strategies around the games have been a hot topic round these parts for years... or the bemoaning of them anyway.

Thanks to the shorter shelf life of movies as opposed to games (a video game's sales legs can span years but a movie really only has 2 major chances to cash in at launch and then DVD release) Marketing is arguably more important to the movie than it would be to any game, so it makes sense why people would focus on it here. I don't think the super bowl is in the cards for this project, but you know that the entire point of the movie is to build brand awareness and push merchandise. That doesn't happen without a sound marketing strategy.
