I hear that the director only ever wants half of sonics face on the screen at a time since it would look weird seeing him head on. Is this true?

This rendition of Sonic is so incredibly bad that even Sonic Team has room to criticize, but not very much. 

Ignoring any of Sonic Team's output, I'm not very inclined to put stock in SoJ's feelings on the matter because this is the same fucking rope to hang themselves with they gave Archie pre-Penders and Big Red Button. The time to object to the portrayal of their licence that they let someone else handle was a long before principal photography has already wrapped and the film is in post. If they cared so little about looking in on and putting a stop to things even back in preproduction, which is when this design work would have been hashed out, that's their own damn fault.

I don't know. I'd figure that would be the case if they went with a more Generations-type model for Sonic since the goal is for his mouth never be in the middle... but, with this one, the mouth already is in the middle, presumably.

You know, and to call me crazy if you want, but I truly think they had VERY little say in what goes on in this movie production. I don't know I just can't shake this feeling.

I mean, i’ll give this thing the benefit of the doubt as per because... well, one picture does not bereft the end product of what could actually end up being a very good film. 

But I’m not going to lie. As soon as I saw this thing... the left hemisphere of my brain went into overdrive and I was shouting “no, no, noooo, noooooooo!!!” at my phone screen

I personally feel this redesign from what we can make out is... frankly, absolutely terrible. I was expecting a look as per usual but furrier like the werehog. What we have instead is sonic starring in TED 3. The arms, the teddy bear pupil eyes... the sneakers... with laces? I mean, What?!

But hey, apparently this works within their boundaries of bringing Sonic to live action. So if they reckon from testing that this is the best way forward - then sure, i’ll give it a chance until we get a trailer. Detective Pikachu bizarrely pleased me, so theres no reason this can’t also.

You can’t judge much from one character model (and mishandled ring sounds) after all.

Well we can safely assume the other animal characters will likely be similarly designed. So that already is a large concern. 

Idk for me I don’t feel I owe this film my optimism personally considering how the franchise is already being handled as well as the horrible trend of bad game movies, with very few decent in between. I don’t see any reason to think the Sonic film of all of them will be any exception

Making Sonic's design more realistic will always play against itself and never makes sense, period. You committed to make Sonic closer to a realistic hedgehog, okay, fine. But hedgehogs don't wear sneakers. Neither are blue or speak english. The whole concept of making him "fit" the human world is wrong, because it will never fit realistically. Like Oshima said, he's a fantasy/cartoon character and should stay as one. Heck, this could've worked well if they based his design on the source material instead of the real animal. Next they're gonna make "Tail" (this ain't a typo) because in the real world, foxes don't have 2 tails, lol

This, this right here. They keep doing this. They don't see who they are getting in bed or just don't care to pay attention untill things are too late. If you want to curate their brand, curate that shit. You can't just let stuff occur and then over correct after the fact, at least this many times. And what's worse is that the over corrections to tend be limited in thier own way as well , so while I understand these over corrections, I can't really feel for them because they aren't great sometimes and the reason they are even doing this is their own fault

I wonder if Sega actually has any control over the movie or if the licencing arangement limits them to a consulting role. I think the same happened to Marvel stuff licenced to Fox and Sony.

It’s like giving an obnoxious kid tubs of paint, tell them not to toss the stuff on the brand new clean white walls, and then leaving them alone for vacation for a week and then coming back and being surprised when they do the thing anyways.

Edit: Actually that’s not completely accurate, lemme change that. It’s like giving a kid carte Blanche to paint their own version of a classical painting, then leaving them unsupervised for the next few days and coming back to find a mess, then chastising them despite the fact that they weren’t told otherwise until AFTER the mess is done.

So I wonder if Shadow will be brought into the sequel or If they'll stick to the Genesis era. I know Tails, Knuckles and Amy will definitely be main characters in the sequel. Maybe Metal Sonic as the main villain.

You know, this whole "stop overreacting, Sonic can survive anything" mindset only works in the parallel universe where every new Sonic project has standards and expectations reset to zero and past fiascos automagically no longer exist.

Can you name the last time a Sonic game sold more than one million copies worldwide? How about two million copies worldwide? What about three million?

Sonic Boom, launched in late 2014, was supposed to be a reinvention of the Sonic brand for new audiences. We're at the end of 2018, where has that venture gone now?

If the Sonic series proceeded to put out at least one monumental disaster every year for the next five years, back to back, do you really think that the franchise would still be getting any new games? Or any new projects at all?

The reality we live in has a fascinating concept of having people gradually stop supporting products they don't think is worth their time and money--from the critics that review them, to the consumers that pay for them, to even the producers that fund them. Even juggernaut franchises that are "too big to fail" eventually get caught up in some sort of backlash and start feeling the effects.

You know would what would be better than being able to survive putting out trash? Not needing to survive the results of putting out trash in the first place. And you can easily accomplish that by not putting out trash.

Stop framing the series' inability to ingloriously implode after constantly churning out terrible projects as something we should be grateful for. Hundreds of other series have managed that just fine without continuing to make mistakes, let alone making an outright bad product in the first place.

So many franchises would kill to have what Sonic had. There was enough good will under the belt of this series to last him a millenium. You don't get to fuck up this hard this often and still stick around if the makings of something truly incredible with the potential to last pretty much forever wasn't there in some manner. 

So much of that has been squandered away with each new thing they do. Sometimes they'll accidentally find people who know what they're doing to work on their shit. They'll find an Ian Flynn to write their own characters better than they currently could. They'll find a Taxman to make a good 2D game that fans would readily call Sonic 4 over the actual Sonic 4 the company made. They'll find a Tee Lopes who can make really good music for Classic Sonic and not that weird, chicken-scratch synth from the Green Hill Zone in Forces. There's probably even someone out there, right now, who has the skills to make a good 3D Sonic game that's just waiting to give themselves over to them for the sake of the franchise. Even Sumo Digital, despite TSR's shortcomings, are still impressing me more with their ability to create spin-offs for them, despite the ones working on TSR being a group of newbies to this Racing series.

However, the overabundance of incompetence from their end just makes it too much of a once in a blue moon situation. Sonic Team is incredibly passionless now. Watching the SGB playthrough of Sonic Unleashed is really putting into perspective just how much Sonic Forces didn't give a shit when it came to level design and presentation. They hand off their shit to people who don't know what the fuck they're doing or meddle with their projects in ways that don't help or don't make any sense. Hearing all the horrible decision making that SEGA had a hand in behind Big Red Button's development of Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric made me feel sorry for the man in charge of that development team. And now here comes along Sonic-Man, out from Sonic 06, to bare his ass in theaters nationwide in an example of them not interfering making things worse. 

It's like they suck at doing anything. When they meddle with someone they make things worse. When they don't do anything they make things worse. It's almost as if they don't know when to do which. 

If Taxman and the team he worked with are good at making a game, don't force them to put in Green Hill and Chemical Plant so that the only major complaint people had with Mania was an idea that came from the incompetent side of corporate. 

If Hollywood's turning your gaming icon into an abomination, step in and keep that from happening. I was already shocked when I heard in one of the Iizuka interviews for Sonic Boom that it hurt him to see the characters get redesigned the way they were but now this? Aren't you guys in charge? Did you feel you had no choice? Were you convinced that turning Sonic into something you hated and thought looked like shit was going to be what salvaged him?

It's no wonder Forces was just an amalgamation of "Shit we think the Sonic fans like".

Someone, somewhere once said they liked Wisps, Classic Sonic, 2D, 3D, Characters, Darker Stories, Light-hearted stories, Serious villains, Deviantart, Green Hill, and Chemical Plant so we're just gonna get the Swedish Chef to toss all of that shit into a blender, regardless of the original context for these concepts, and expect it not to clash at all.

It all comes down to me just yelling "Get your shit together" over and over again into the ether. At this point, they're not going to. It's even more far-fetched that Sonic will be given away to someone who could take better care of him.

I'll always love the Sonic series. The corporate entity in charge of overseeing him though? Nope. No love lost there. I feel for the people on the bottom rung who probably want to work to make Sonic good but can't because the structure of this thing is too fucked for them to do anything about it. These people in charge are fresh out of the benefit of the doubt from me. 

I'm just so confused. In what reality does one look at this fucking circus and not try harder to fix it? You're out of passion, you're out of sincerity, you're out of ideas, and eventually you'll be out of time.

Always keep the Yogi Bear movie in mind. Always remember. The Yogi Bear movie killed the franchise to such a degree that it has never made a comeback. Never even tried to.

I only watched Yogi Bear once and remember very little of it. So why was it disliked?

I nor has anyone I know seen the movie (Yogi Bear). I remember previews but I just particularly remember a feeling of disinterest. The bears didn't look  too bad as I recall. I think even at that time though, I was already fatigued with series-movie live action reboots (think Scooby Doo) . If only I knew that that trend wasn't going to be a fad. 

Edit: Smurfs and Chipmunks further shamed this sort of thing.
