Sonic and Mario Game Brainstorm

So I just made up the base of a Mario/Sonic crossover and it seems like it'd work pretty well.

Basic Controls (Wii U Gamepad / Pro Controller):

Left Analog - Move

B/A Button - Jump

Y/X Button - Attack

L /R Trigger - Crouch

Right Analog - Camera

+ Button - Pause

- Button - Inventory

Gameplay:

In this game, your objective is to save your friends held captive by King Bowser and Dr. Eggman, as well as figure out their terrible plans for world conquest and take them down.

You go through a big string of 3D hubworlds that connect each of the stages with one another, similar in vein to both Mario 64 and Sonic Unleashed. Here you can talk to NPCs, play minigames (either hidden or out in the open), buy powerups or food to put in your inventory, and whatnot.

In each stage you go to, you have three different 'Acts' a piece. These acts are all part of one big environment and may cross with paths you've been on earlier before, depending on the stage. Since Sonic and Mario are both playable in these worlds, the levels are big playgrounds with powerups everywhere just as in your average Mario game, but there are also more slopes in the fields as well as the occasional areas with loops and ramps like you'd expect in a Sonic game.

The gameplay premise is simple. You're given three heart points for each player, which enemies can deplete, but ring-coins can recharge. Both characters at base share moves featured in Super Mario 3D World (including the mini boost you get from running for an extended time), but Sonic leans closer to Sonic Adventure while Mario leans closer to Mario 64. Regardless, even with their differences, they still would feel similar enough.

Every level has a countdown (some longer than others), and ends with a tall signpost you must spin down to change the face from Bowser & Eggman to Mario & Sonic. Boss arenas usually end with a Egg Capsule, where you free animals (mini-boss), or a captive character (big boss).

Every act has three "Green Star Rings" hidden in each, all of which are gained by either exploring or achieving mini-missions. When you collect these, you can use them to unlock doors to new levels ahead. (In other words, just like Mario 3D World.) You can also sometimes get them in the hubworlds by finishing small missions for NPCs.

Game Modes:

You start the game in either 1P, Double Team 1P, Co-Op 2P mode, or Head-to-Head Multiplayer.

In 1P, you're able to choose which character you start off as in both the selection screen and before stages. You play through the stages as one normally would in a Sonic or Mario game, and thanks to being able to restart the stages and change your character at the loading screen, things are pretty flexible if you find a tough spot that would be easier with the other character.

Second mode is Double Team 1P. In this mode, one character follows the other (classic Sonic & Tails style), and you can switch between the two (with the R Button) to find areas that may be easier to find with one character or the other. This simplifies the experience for players who want to switch between the two by their own whimsy, but the main mode is still left as an option.

In 2P Co-Op, you can do exactly the same thing as Double Team 1P, but further streamlining the experience. One plays as one while the other plays as the opposite. You both work together simultaneously to figure out puzzles, find secrets, and learn how to traverse through the stages with Sonic & Mario.

In Head-to-Head Multiplayer, the game changes. You can take on either two player 1v1 local multiplayer, or four player 2v2 co-op online. In this mode, you can either do a score attack or time attack, meant to see who can race to the finish quicker, or get the most points before the end. In this mode, for the sake of fairness, Speed Shoes are commonly placed for Mario players to use to keep up with the Sonic players.

Shared qualities between Mario & Sonic:

Slide / Roll - Move + Crouch. Mario slides on his butt and Sonic spins. On sloped surfaces, Mario has more traction and thus is more controllable, while Sonic gains a lot of speed from downhill movement and thus is harder to control.

Ground Pound - Jump + Crouch. Sonic's is more of a slight bounce that can be tapped multiple times to gain height, Mario's is a solid slam that can be made a super-jump if you time the jump button right after the landing.

Side Jump - Brake + Jump. Sonic or Mario flings themselves backward.

Super Jump - Jump + Land + Jump. A quicker, higher second jump.

Wall Jump - Wall + Jump. You get the picture.

Long Jump - Run + Crouch + Jump.

Twirl - Spin the Analog Stick quickly. Mario or Sonic spin like tops.

Mario-specific moves and stats:

- Is slower but easier to steer and handle

- jumps higher than Sonic

- can do an extra "triple" jump past the second jump

- can punch-punch-kick (or dive while in motion) as his both his ground and midair attack

- can do a backflip superjump with "Crouch + Jump" at a still

Sonic-specific moves and stats:

- Faster, but a bit slipperier

- Has a lower jump height

- ground attack is the Spin Dash, which when started in motion is just the spin attack (can also be done with Crouch + Jump at a still)

- midair attack is the instashield, and when held is the Cat Mario esque diagonal dive, can semi-home into enemies this time (geddit)

- Has the advantage of being able to run/climb up walls for a short period of time (once again ala Cat Mario)

Power-ups:

Super Mushroom - Adds one extra HP. (Food bought and put into your inventory can do the same thing, or better.)

Big Ring - Uses ring-coins as a temporary shield, where getting hit spills a few everywhere in place of losing health.

Fire Flower - Mario can shoot fireballs and Sonic can shoot through the air as a fireball.

Electric Barrier - sucks in ring-coins magnetically.

Tanooki Suit - Allows Mario & Sonic to float around through the air, and use the tail-swipe.

Bubble Barrier - Allows Mario & Sonic to breathe underwater.

Starman - temporary invincibility.

Speed Shoes - increases speed for a short period of time.

Green Mushroom - 1up. You can also get this from 100 coin-rings.

Insert many powerups unique to this game here.

What do you guys think about it?
