Season 1 | Sonic Boom: TV Series Discussion

I can understand why, well outside of Swiftly's existence that is. The townspeople yet again became braindead to Sonic's good deeds and only Mayor Fink seems to actually notice that the punishment was pretty harsh granted he didn't do anything about it until Eggman came but atleast he noticed. Granted, this sort of also happened in Don't Judge Me as well and that bothered me just as much, so yeah.

After watching that episode I'm pretty sure that the writers must have watched a DiC Sonic episode. Everything just seems to mock his radical attitude from those cartoons, Swifty's cringe inducing catchphrases, everyone fawning over him, even the first gag of Sonic over the top shilling a burger seemed like a hark back to his borderline obsession with chilli dogs.

I didn't think it was that mean spirited however. The other heroes caught onto things pretty quickly and the townspeople were just following the rules matter of fact. They tend to exist as a brainless neutral party, naturally this makes them rather unsympathetic after all the times Sonic saves them but they didn't seem actually abusive in this one.

Also another episode Eggman expands to trying to take over the village, shame he wastes more time making bad gags about the theme park idea than actually putting it into action. What were the townspeople actually running away from?

Overall it was a pretty clunky episode but I can't help laugh at their utter mockery of the 90s attitude Sonic. Swifty was annoying, but intentionally annoying so it was funny. Even his voice actor did it in such a blatantly over the top forced manner you knew he was supposed to mocked.

Uncool *BANG* Uncool *BANG* Uncool *BANG* Unc......

A torture porn is nothing nasty or dirty, despite the name. A torture porn is basically an episode of a series designed specifically to put a character through as much pain, or misfortune as it possibly can, despite the character in question having done nothing to deserve any such treatment.

The term began in the Modern Spongebob Episodes where the terrible writers has made at least 20 different Squidward torture porn episodes in all of which, Squidward has done nothing to deserve any bad things to happen to him. He doesn't act like a jerk, he doesn't cause any harm, or insult anyone, he only wishes to live his life, only for Spongebob, and Patrick to both jump in and cause him as much pain, and misfortune as possible.

As you can imagine, it isn't a good thing to watch. You might be asking what's the difference between a torture porn episode, and just an episode where a character gets their comeuppance. Basically, a torture porn episode is where the writers believe it's somehow funny by putting the character in as much pain as possible, going to all attempts to make the pain as horrifically detailed as they possibly can (Which causes people to get sick during some episodes of Spongebob), and the character having done absolutely nothing to deserve the treatment. More or less, they are a innocent who are being put through complete and utter torture for no reason.

Here, it's not too bad but it still follows the same tropes. Sonic has done absolutely nothing wrong, everyone, including Amy, Tails, Sticks, and Knuckles at the beginning of the episode all treat Sonic like crap and treat Swifty as an idol, despite the only thing he did was coming in shouting stupid shit, and saving Amy's burger, and then the rest of the episode being completely against Sonic as the townspeople treat him like dirt and banish him on idiotic grounds.

First off, maybe it's because SpongeBob and Patrick only want Squidward to be their best friend, but they don't respect his personal wishes, because NOTHING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP, not even solitude or fame! It's also because SpongeBob probably hasn't hit puberty, yet, and sponges age slower than other sea creatures! If they did the same thing to Sandy, they would've driven her back to the surface!

Secondly, shut your beak! Sonic is treated like crap, because his games, as of late, ARE crap! Take Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal and Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric! They are crap games! And Sega is just TOO STUBBORN TO QUIT, AND RETIRE SONIC!

It has absolutely nothing to do with Spongebob's age.

In Seasons 1-3. Spongebob was naive and friendly. This often lead him into going overboard but he knew when to be serious, he knew when to back off, and most importantly, when Squidward's actions finally did backfire on him. It was because he acted like an asshole and ended up unintentionally setting up the events. For example, take One More Bite. Squidward deliberately acts like he hates Krabby Patties just to annoy Spongebob. Spongebob, content with the fact that Squidward tried it, and fair enough didn't liked it tried to be helpful and not give Squidward the patty due to believing he hates them.

This isn't Spongebob's fault as Squidward intentionally did this just to annoy him. It later backfires when his intentional annoying causes him to go through withdrawal and not listen to Spongebob's warnings not to go overboard with Krabby Patties. This is how you do it. With Squidward deserving his comeuppance and Spongebob actually trying to help and warn him.

But at least half way through Season 4, the writers were changed and suddenly they changed Spongebob into a creepy stalker of a character who goes out of his way to stalk Squidward. Not befriend him, but outright stalk him, and the way he acts is like he plans on kidnapping and doing horrible things to Squidward. For example, in Boating Buddies, he stalks Squidward everywhere, even sitting listening to him breathe just for an excuse to annoy Squidward. Then things get much much worse when Squidward is sent to boating school. Spongebob not only stalks the living hell out of Squidward but he also intentionally puts him through as much harm as possible and tries his hardest to not allow Squidward to be happy.

There's an episode where Squidward is happy because he's part of a secret club. What does Spongebob do? He stalks Squidward yet again, all because he was happy, goes in, gets him thrown out of the club flat on his ass, tortures him further, and then after Squidward manages to get back in, he comes back out again and gets Squidward kicked out AGAIN. There's a difference between trying to be his friend and deliberately torturing him.

It could've been worse; Squilliam could've joined the secret club, and became its president, just to make Squidward feel like killing himself, or at least WILLINGLY let himself get mangled by a sea bear. It's not like SpongeBob would one day snap like Darrin did to Endora in that Family Guy clip of Bewitched, and MAN UP against Squidward's constant killjoyness! HULK HATE SPONGEBOB! RRAAAHHH!! (FLIPS TABLE)

So, let's get back on topic... what's the next new episode that's gonna air in the UK? Chez Amy?

Spongebob rarely seems to be intentionally making Squidward's life hell, they've just made him so dumb and oblivious to anyone's pain (but his own....sometimes) that he just comes off as either retarded or sociopathic. They also escalated the repercussions of his antics since as you said, he originally pivoted problems by bugging Squidward, but it was the latter's own zeal that made things truly bad. Now it often tends to be Spongebob's stupidity that single handedly ruins lives.

It's not just Squidward either. Any other character that was driven by karma has been skewed into the mean spirited humour. The Krabs vs Plankton rivalry for example is less about Plankton getting punished for trying to ruin Krabs, but seeing Krabs get away with being worse than the show's villain.

Concerning Boom, it has shades of this (as said the townspeople, like Bikini Bottom's cast, are apathetic sheeple most of the time, and Knuckles at times is just too one dimensionally retarded to really sympathise with) but it's not overdone that much. There's at least usually a happy resolution by the end of it. Otherwise it's still characters being flawed and getting into problems for it. And at least it's non discriminate abuse unlike cases like Spongebob. Sonic's not always the butt monkey, nor has Amy or Sticks or whoever become a grating karma houdini.

So episode 36 takes place on New Years Eve. This means in order for the next half of the second season to start airing by the time this episode airs, they would have to start with episode 27 in October. Then again, it's not like they stay in any order in the U.K., so they could just air that particular episode when it's due.

My friend says that's it. No more episodes after the ones I listed. So 16.

According to the Sky+ guide, the last "New: Sonic Boom" 4pm slot is on Tuesday. From Wednesday its just "Sonic Boom" with a 30 minute time slot. That screams repeats.

Okay, after watching Closed Door Policy, I think I found a new favourite episode. The animation and writing in this one are so good!

The silly plot point of Sticks having an army of Frog.. whatever they were called in her basement, the interaction between Knuckles and Tails, Sonic's snarky remarks and Eggman being a nerd. XD Some of my favourite lines from this episode are:

"Time to take in the trash!" -Sonic

"What's that mean?" -Knuckles

"Shh, just dramatic moment." -Sonic

"I do not have mother issues!" -Eggman

*pushes shelf in front of basement entrance* "Designer shelving. Sturdy and good feng shui." -Amy

I noticed how this episode had bouncier and smoother animation than others, and the lip syncing was almost always on point. The textures seemed to take a hit but I assume that was from the YouTube video quality? Still, it made me wonder what a potential Sonic Boom movie would look like. Probably beautiful. If they were to just touch it up a bit, I think it'd be all eye candy.

Regarding the writing, I wanna see more episodes with Sonic keeping that well known attitude of his. "...If you guys are done making fun of Amy, who, by the way, totally deserves it." That line may make him look a bit of a jerk, but his tone made it so that you know it's all in a playful manner. I also like how Knuckles was useful this time. His strength came into good play and even to some silly moments such as when he is moving the couch and Tails is getting dragged behind. And that "ominous music gag" as I call it, when Amy was getting the surfboard from the house was pulled off well. I love it when there's a semi-4th wall breaking moment like that in cartoons and I'd love to see the show experiment in more ways with that.

Dude. We get it. Please stop giving us fifty freaking mentions of it. The released episodes in the UK are already posted on Youtube. Considering you guys got 8 months worth of episodes while the UK is getting 16 randomly selected episodes in Standard Definition, I wish you would stop acting like CN USA is getting treated the worse here.

Well pardon me for thinking this show deserves better! I'm just trying to support a good show here, so sorry that you don't care about wishing this show gets the attention it deserves. There is no reason why a show as decent as Sonic Boom, should be shoehorned by terrible shows like Teen Titans Go, Uncle Grandpa, or even that awful new Transformers cartoon. Maybe if more fans would stand up for this show, then maybe CN would realize people want it. Instead, I'm the only one bothering to speak up, not only here, but on Facebook and Youtube. It's a shame I get comments that trash what I say instead, I'm just trying to get Sonic fans to speak up, and let the world know we want the show. Instead, the fans just tell me to quit complaining...

No one is trashing your comments. But it's annoying when you keep making 50 posts all saying the same thing. That Cartoon Network USA is getting treated like shit, despite the treatment being worse in places like the UK with only 16 random episodes. As Jason said, every other show in the USA goes on Summer hiatus. Sonic Boom isn't any different. I don't see how you sitting here shouting about how Cartoon Network are treating it like shit is suddenly going to make them change their ways.

We're telling you to stop acting like an entitled brat and constantly preaching about how this show "derserves" more.

Like holy hell dude, chill out.

Not to mention you guys literally just got the show like 2 weeks ago.

I wonder what Cartoon Network Australia is airing, they got the show 3 days after the UK. If it's random like the UK's then maybe they could have gotten new episodes! Too bad I don't know anyone from Australia...

Forgive me for blunt, but I recall you doing the same damned thing. It comes off as pretty hypocritical considering how much you complained about the UK not airing it, even though there were Youtube uploads. If I'm mistaken here, then please correct me.

Big difference. I had some basis for complaint. I.E: The UK wasn't getting it until one year later. Even now when we did get it, it's in Standard Definition only, it's 16 random episodes.

He's complaining about A. The UK getting 2 episodes before the US, despite having 8 months of episodes before most other countries, B. All other shows go on hiatus during summer so it's not like Sonic Boom is getting specifically picked on, C. The episodes the UK did get were all uploaded to Youtube, D. Constant complaints that Cartoon Network USA is total crap when that is very much wrong considering the state of other regions and more.

There's a massive difference between complaining that a show is taking 8 months to move to another region, and acting entitled because a country haven gotten 2 totally random episodes before you.

Yes, I complained that it didn't air in the UK because I was made to believe we were getting it at the very last minute, which goes into my hatred for CN UK because they always delay shows, delay episodes, and delay everything. He's complaining because the UK got 2 new English episodes, and France is getting episodes, despite the fact the show is created in France so that only makes sense.
