Sonic Boom's New Characters designs

I can't wait to see porn of Amy's new design.

These aren't nearly as hideous as I figured. Knuckles' is still pretty bad (keeping him roughly the same size as before but giving him that body shape would have been so much preferred) but better than I expected, and Sonic's looks like a rejected alternate universe Archie design; but I was expecting them to go all Chinese knockoff of The Incredibles on us and they managed to put more effort into it than that. Tails' minor changes still make him look surprisingly much better than he did before, and Amy in particular couldn't be made any worse, so I hope her new schtick... er, sticks. Eggman I'm pretty indifferent to, though.

I haven't read the whole thread, but is anyone else getting a "Ty the Tasmanian Tiger" vibe from these designs? Especially Sonic?

Nope, for me the first thing I thought of was Jak and Daxter, although Ty springs to mind when looking at the NPC concept art...

I honestly get a more "Sonic merged with Crash Bandicoot" vibe than anything else with Boom's game designs.

But Crash doesn't wear scarfs or use bandages/sports wrap.

Jak seems to be kitted out pretty much like Sonic because he's also traversing harsh environments that put physical strain on his body, even in Jak 3 when he's in the desert he's equipped for the harsh conditions, kinda like Sonic and co are, since I think Boom is going to mostly be set in natural environments, which would separate SEGA Sonic and Boom! Sonic quite a lot in terms of locales.

Huh, I have to say, these new designs are really growing on me after a couple days (with the obvious exception being Knuckles.)

Tails' redesign is probably the most logical and fitting. The tool belt and goggles really suit his character, as he is the mechanic and tech wizard of the group. Other than that, he looks the exact same as his game counterpart, so no complaints there.

The more I look at Amy, I start to really like her new outfit. Like Tails, she looks the same, but her outfit is a bit more suiting for an archaeologist, and I'm sure it will make sense with the direction they're taking Amy in. I really liked her Modern design, but come on, that dress is kind of awkward.

I'm starting to accept Sonic's new look. Yeah, the blue arms really irk me, as it doesn't really round out his color palette well enough, but it isn't really noticeable in action or anything. It just kind of annoys me Amy's arms are flesh colored, they either should have kept it consistent with everyone else, or not make that change at all. Aside from that, my only other complaint is that he's a little too tall for me, but if it's them trying to make this version older, then that's fine by me. On a postive note, I actually really dig the scarf and I like how his fur actually, ya know, has that realistic fur texture without going overboard *cough, Eddie Lebron Duck-Billed Sonic, cough*. Sonic actually feels the most radically different to me, but I'm sure it's something I'll grow to appreciate and fully dig over time.

Knuckles.... everything has been said that's needed to be said. I understand beefing him up a little bit, but they went overboard here. His head looks really awkward on that puffed up body, and it looks like he's been pumped up with an air pump. I wish they would have just made him look a little more muscular on his normal design while giving him some bling bling or something, but whatever. It's a change that makes sense, but I just don't like it at all.

I don't really have much to say on Eggman, but that new jacket certainly makes him look badass.

Now, I actually like the sports bandages quite a bit. I think it looks best on Sonic and Knuckles, mainly as it covers Knuckles' fists, really selling the image of him being a scrapper. It looks pretty cool on Sonic, but I don't like that it's covering his shoes. Come on, those are one of the most iconic elements to his design, why would you want to hide it? Aside from that, it's a cool change that I'm totally fine with, and it works fine with the whole cast in different ways.

So, in terms of concept art, I'm starting to really like these designs. It's just going to take a while to grow on me, and I still prefer all the modern designs, (aside from maybe Amy), which have that timeless and familiar look to them I can associate with Sonic a hell of a lot more. I just hope they look better in-game, the concept art shows promise and the characters we saw in the TV preview were rendered nicely, but their game models look awful. Apparently it's being worked on, but I hope they don't look like plastic in-game.

Interesting detail I've just noticed on the super high-res art.

Do you see it? Knuckles is wearing gloves under all that tape, and the spikes definitely aren't part of some kind of knuckle duster. They're on his gloves, and the tape has holes cut out around them. You can clearly make out the difference between his gloves and the tape by texture and how the gloves start further down his wrists than the tape. Very happy about that.

cool find, glad to see e still has his knuckles, or at least, he does as far as we can tell for now.

Onething I'm liking less and less, are Amy's tights and pink wrist tape. I think they're adding a little too much detail to the design and cluttering it up. I think the tapes fine on the guys because they're basically naked, the tape's the only extra detail on their designs. Amy however, is wearing a dress, with buttons and a tape belt. That's as much detail as the three guys outfits really, but then she's got the tights, the wrist tape, the gold bangles, belt thingies on her shoes and the details of the shoes herself.

It reminds me a little of Sonia from SU

Sonia_1.png

Where there's just so many different pieces of clothing, so many details and so many colours that it's really distracting and just clutters her design up....

Hmm, for some reason, when I brothers first learned about the new designs, they assumed I'd be piss off.

But I dunno...I'm not really sure what my emotions about this are at the moment. On one hand they do look more expressive, Tails does look natural like that and Sonic does appear to have more attitude in this design, while Amy looks pretty cool. Although her outfit looks ninja-ish to me, does anyone else get that?

Knuckles just looks too darn weird, but I guess he did look too much like Sonic before, in terms of height and build. I guess the biggest problem I have is that Sonics arms are blue...that does seem to annoy me for some reason.

I'm not sure why...

I was talking more so about the impressions that the environments and apparent level design gave me.

Excellent! Knuckles still has the spikes naturally attached to his hands. SO he's got his namesake still; thank god!

I like all of the new character designs. Less sports tape and they'd be perfect.

Pretty much the same case for me at this point.

I'd imagine the sports tape on their shoes and shins would protect them from the intense sandstorm that would result from them running really fast. They'd probably have no shoes or skin left after that.

Buffles looks a little better when folks draw 2D art of him

Also he looks better with shorter legs, but that's just me.

Okay it's not the figure huggingness of the skirt that bothers me, it's the thickness.  I love Amy's concept art but her render... the dress looks really thick, like it's made of rubber.  In the art her clothes look more thin and like they're made of material.

Sonic: I really dig his new design. I think it did little to no damage to his appearance and I like his shoes and those weird extra spikes. What I don't understand why the fuck people are such cry babies about his blue arms. It's allowed to Shadow and Silver to have fur on their arms but on Sonic it's looks hideous and is a shitty character design? God.

Tails: He have little changes but it's looks great on him. I liked his design, but I prefer his re-design over the current one, it's matches him perfectly.

Amy: Another design that I like. She looks like a cheeky action girl to me and fits her pretty good. Let's hope that she will be badass to match her badass appearance.

Knuckles: I was pretty sure that I'm gonna hate his new look since the silhoutte has been revealed, but I must admit that I like his design. He's the least appealing to me because of his buffed up body which looks downright weird to me but it could be worse I guess. And I don't mind his gloves.

The reactions that this game and the TV show gets are hilarious, it's represents the typical behavior of millions of manchildren who are raging on the internet about how their favorite franchise got killed because it's trying to do something new and different instead of milking the same shit over and over and over and over again.

Ok, there's no need to mock people and act dismissive over an aspect of a character design. When Sonic's arms are flesh colored for more than twenty years, people have a reason to get a little upset. Yeah, it's something we all need to accept and get used to, but it kind of disrupts the balance of Sonic's color scheme. They went a little overboard on this change, IMHO.

My problem is however that they act like that the blue arms looks god awful on Sonic. Honestly, there could have been worse decisions about his redesign.

You're right, it could have been a hell of a lot worse than what we got, but it's still a change I can't fully get behind. People have been acting fairly tolerant and respectful over others' opinions over the show, so there's no need to call people that don't like it cry babies. Just saying.

In my opinion...I really don't mind it. I've been a Sonic fan since the very beginning of his existence and this is just feeling like another 'green eyes' moment. His colour scheme is more balanced in this version and him having bare arms never really made much sense when compared to all his other friends. Maybe they'll have an episode where he shaves his arms and people make a bunch of shaving jokes.

Sorry, I just get irritated easily when people argue over things like this. I don't mind it if they don't like it because I can understand it that the sudden color change is weird, but if they decide to bash Sonic's new design then bashing his blue arms is not the way to go.

Now that sounds like a nice idea for an episode XD. It seems like the TV show has got a capable crew of writers, so it would be pretty cool to see them self aware and take a joke at their own expense over a somewhat controversial design. :D

You know the only thing that throws me for a loop is the idea that in order to be strong you HAVE to be buff. Knuckles I'm looking at you or I'm looking at your Sonic Boom designers. I know this isn't replacing MY JAPANESE sonic.... so in the grand prize of things it doesn't matter. BUT this idea that Knuckles and Eggman weren't kool enough on their own and were made buffer to appear whatever makes me sad. Something I also notice is this NEED by western companies to make even something like Sonic REALISITIC... look at his hands compared to Japanese sonic. Notice the difference? I did. And my last thing about this.... it's not SicFi enough. Sonic is not a funny animal game.. it's an action adventure/ Light sifi story. And NO western company even TRIES to understand this.

It's all this that makes me shy away from Sonic Boom even if it's not changing the main real sonic. It's just .... I dunno. THose are my thoughts.

Honestly, the thing that really jarred me the most about the blue arms was the fact that I've spent nearly 23 years accustomed to seeing it as some color error. Something maybe only bootleggers or artists tend to get wrong when trying to mimic the SegaSonic style. So to see in an official design, it surely did confuse me at first. And the fact that only Amy retains her peach arms but not Sonic confused me even more.

So while I do think the blue arms clash with Sonic's color palette a bit, that doesn't mean I utterly loathe them. I've gotten a bit more used to it by now, but still prefer if they were peach-colored.

I have to admit, I'm okay with the blue arms but all the same I still keep thinking he's wearing a sweater or something at first glance.
