Am I the only one who can't help but see this whole thing as a farce? It won't take long before I see this whole thing as one large practical joke. Ken Penders might be the most innovative comic [i will not apologize for the bad pun, LOL!] since Andy Kaufman. I swear, it gets worse by the day. You think that Ken will turn around and do anything just anything worthy of a modicum of praise or recognition. But every other day we all learn that a new error or baffling artistic decision. I thought everything bad yesterday, but now he's going, or at least implying, to include sex scenes involving teenage girls? The bikini was bad enough, but this revelation is just too much. This has to be an elaborate joke at our expense. Well, maybe it is, but is it intentional?

He baselessly accused Ian Flynn of stealing his ideas, most of his ad campaign has focused on male characters over the female lead of his intended series, and the denizens of Mysterious Cat Country bring up ALL kinds of unfortunate implications about jungle dwelling peoples.

So yeah, he's pretty much the full package.

I hate to be that person who dusts off an old account for the sole purpose of arguing, but the ad comment confuses me. Far as I remember, the campaign has consisted of two Lara-Su pictures, one Julie-Su picture, one Lien-Da picture, two horrible CGI abominations made to look like Lien-Da, one Dimitri picture, one Spectre picture, one Knuckles picture, and two script excerpts with a mix of female and male characters. Then the booth had a Lien-Da cut out, and the poster thing, with three girls and two guys (yeah, one of the guys is the biggest on the picture, but it seems much more likely it's like that because it's Knuckles than because it's a guy).

Granted, I think the Spectre picture was something he was selling prints of, but still, it seems a stretch to say he's focused on guys for most of the campaign. If anything, I'd say it's been too Lien-Da centered.

Unless you're talking about something else completely and I'm being a complete idiot right now.

I like the fact that the only difference between Knuckles and Not Knuckles is that barely noticeable yellow goatee. And that those medals at the top suspiciously look like the silver Soleanna symbols.

He has returned. Where NickiSavageArt & FuhrerMustang have stayed silent after their God King Kenders shot himself in the foot with depicting a teenage (14? 15?) character in a bikini to sexualize her for interest in potential sales, one man returns to stand up for his master.

He is trublusonicfan, and he will not rest in comparing Wonder Woman and Betty & Veronica at the beach/pool to Lara-Bikini and shield his unfairly attacked martyr of a favorite creator from such attacks as "logic" and "incredulous disbelief that the first depiction of a main teen character is her wearing a random bikini for no reason".

I totally remember watching this when this first aired! Man, I can't believe that it's been two years now. It's funny to watch this again. It's hard to believe that Herman Cain was once a viable contender for the Republican ticket. Anyway, thank you for sharing this with me, my friend. I wish I could give you a cookie through the screen! Now I'm going to see if Ken will follow suit and subtly reference Sim City and Pokemon in the future! biggrin.png

Let's add SweeCru to the list of random internet people who's come up with more interesting designs for Penders characters in a day/week than Ken, with more than two decades of industry work, has in two-three years.

Your design actually looks really good!

Someone should really make a comic called "The Sue-Penders Chronicles", which focuses on his slow spiral over the years into darkness, egotism, and insanity, up until Sega finally decides to come down hard on him, and the judge rules that Penders must lose EVERYTHING. Also some off-panels at the end of each issue, where each of Penders' characters give us their opinion against everything he's ever done (and not just the Sonic characters).

Now that would be an interesting comic.

Well that gave me painful flashbacks of art school. *shiver* I think saying this is elaborate performance art is giving Penders too much credit, I don't think most artists buy into their own bullshit that much. *thinks back to thesis class* Oh, never mind.

@biznizz: Wow, this "trubluesonicfan" is a bit of a nut, isn't he? I... I honestly don't have any comment for these, they speak for themselves.

Props for that design SweeCrue, I really dig the outfit! I also like that it has its own homages to Knuckles without, you know, looking like a blatant ripoff. I may incorporate some of your ideas into my own lame redesign and see how it comes out... if you don't mind, of course! Someone should put together an art blog of people doing a better job than Penders with unique designs.

Apperantly the poster hasn't seen Wonder Woman in awhile either, as her costume has changed since 2011. And in the main book by Azzarello & Chang she's actually drawn to look more like an Amazon & less like a pin-up girl *justice league still has a problem with that at times though*

I can't believe someone tried to use Wonder Woman to support Kens argument, that's just pathetic!

Although I will agree Betty & Veronica are technically underage sexualized characters at times, but Archie is actually aimed at kids & teens.... LSC... I don't think even Ken knows who it's aimed at. XD

Yeah, that true. But at least those swimsuits are usually put into context (beach, pool, etc), and there's plent of promotional material which depicts them in clothes.

Lara-Su gets her first debut since the "Follow Your Destiny" vomit, wearing a bikini in a standee with at least three other characters, and Ken had to handwave this by saying she's about to cliff dive from a waterfall, as seen in a scene in the comic. Despite the fact that, you know, that standee had no water whatsoever, there was no page preview where we see this at his table anywhere to even give this context, or that he had to say this ON TWITTER OF ALL PLACES.

This guy can not be freaking serious,

First off, It doesn't matter if TL-SC was made a few years after Kim Possible. That is no excuse at all why Lara-Su can't be made into a strong female lead. Kim Possible was a great female lead who was strong and independent and there's no reason at all why those characteristics can't be followed. The simple fact is Ken doesn't have a clue on how to write female characters and is now trying to throw in half assed sex appeal in a attempt to try win over male fans.

Really? Wonder Woman? First, Wonder Woman is a adult not a teenager, secondly she is shown in both the comics and TV shows like Justice League and Justice League Unlimited to be a very strong character. Fair enough, most of my knowledge of Wonder Woman comes from the animated JL and animated DC films but still she is a strong female lead. She also doesn't wear a bikini, she wears a costume with a skirt, they are completely different things.

As for Betty & Veronica, the difference there is that they are not meant to be main lead action stars. They are meant to look hot so Archie is given a reason that he can't decide about them and also lends more more jokes to be made at Archie's expense. Archie to my knowledge never at any point tried to pass them off as strong, independent female leads like Ken is trying to do with Lara-Su.

Archie comics are usually meant to be slice of life stories. Sure you get the wacky stories like Cyber Adventures and The Man from R.I.V.E.R.D.A.L.E. But then you have the comedy stories which have nothing crazy happening and just show funny situations between Archie,Veronica, and Betty and there's also the brilliant Life with Archie series which is more serious than the comedy stories and aim more for a drama story.

But there's also the fact that Betty and Veronica are not walking around in bikinis all day every day in the comic. Some comic covers show them in bikinis and even then it's when they are either at the beach or at the pool but most of the other ones show them in casual clothes, unlike Ken in which he's trying to put some sex appeal into TL-SC and given how he's written females before, as Bethany said, with the best examples being the story where he manages to lure Sally and Bunnie into a trap by having a mall just suddenly appear, or having Sally and Julie-Su sit by the pool in swimsuits and bikinis while talking about their problems with Sonic & Knuckles.

We already know for a fact he couldn't write a strong female lead if he tried and him now trying to give his ugly designs sex appeal and also hinting towards sex scenes, show he doesn't respect these characters at all and that is what f**king pisses off so much. We had great respect shown to them characters from Ian, Ben Bates, Tracey Yardley, Evan Stanley and more only for Ken to snatch him them away for a attempt to attract people to this story.

The bullcrap he pulled with all the things he's revealed at this con have made it clear to me that he shows no respect for these characters. Not when he's so fast to try give Lara-Su and Lien-Da sex appeal, and just how stupid the script previews have made these characters look. Now with the stuff he's revealed at the con with the ugly sex appeal and him hinting towards sex scenes, this book makes me feel sick and I don't even know how Penders' lapdogs can even defend this kind of stupid bullshit.

The thing with Betty and Veronica... that's not their default outfit all the time. There's no doubt Archie artists are trying to make them hot and alluring, but in context of the pictures, Archie or Reggie or someone is always drooling over them. I don't see it as much different from Avatar's "The Beach" episode where (an underaged) Tai-Lee shows up in a bikini and immediately attracts the attention of every teenager on Fire Island.

The logic for Penders!Lara-Su* is more questionable, since I got the impression he was presenting this as her default outfit and the typical handwavey nonsense that "it's not your culture! you wouldn't understand!" especially when none of the other characters shown so far are dressed like that. It just seems really inconsistent on his part. The talk of being "PG-13" and that it's somehow OK for films in that range to feature/allude to underage sex doesn't make it any better.

On a slightly different note: I really dig Dawn Best's take on the characters... it's such a shame making suggestions to Penders expecting him to listen is like talking to a wall.

*As far as I'm concerned, that ain't Lara-Su. I don't have strong opinions on the character as I'm only familiar with Flynn's run with her, but I'll be damned if I'm going to acknowledge this is the same character that got ripped out of the book.

OhI agree overall B&V are much more innocent, just saying I could see where they were coming from

And I agree both comparisons are sad attempts to justify Penders Schlock.

Lol, nah, it's my bad, should have worded my post better.

But yeah, I'm amazed there's still fans out there willing to defend Penders at this point. Talk about stubborn!

One small thing I forgot to mention, another reason why Betty and Veronica is dressed in bikinis in some issues at the beach is to make them look hot so that Archie and Reggie have a excuse to go into a showdown over Veronica.

Yeah. In the end it's all about context. B&V have reason for their apparel, Lara-Su ATM, does not. And really, even let's be honest no matter what Ken says, it probably won't be fully justified in the actual story either. And potential sex scenes, even implied.... Man that just feels super skeevy to do to an ex sonic character.

If you look real close, it seems there is water. A small bit of water completely on the bottom that blends in rather well with Spectre's cloud of smoke. Really hard to notice with the ugly parade above it.

The worst thing about is that this is what happens when Ken is allowed to run wild with these characters. He doesn't have any respect for these character and instead uses them for the most stupid, and disgusting things so far shown in the book.

I recommend getting that more recent pic of the long-haired, slightly dishevelled looking Penders, and make it look like the scene in Mulan where half her face has the make-up wiped off, only instead it's Penders face on one side and a (drawn from the ground up) What-the-Fuckles on the other.

I don't think I have the art skill to pull that off, but I can do this:

COo60E6.jpg

I have no idea why I wasted so much of my time doing this...
