Wii U discussion and upcoming news

Nintendo's not going to do that unless it's affordable for them. They've already proven people will buy their products even if they aren't packed with the best tech you can buy.

I think it should work like a PC and Laptop. At home, the games would have a better resolution and 60 FPS while the handheld portion would be 30 or less and a lower resolution, depending on the game.

The Wii U certainly hasn't proven that though.

The DS, 3DS, and Wii certainly have though. 3 out the 4 previous tries is a good statistic. It's games (or the promise of) that get people to buy systems, I don't care what anyone says.

(And Wii U sales did jump 400% with the launch of Mario Kart 8)

I still think they'll make the next system closer in power to the next-gen Playstation and X-Box consoles.

I think you're both right.

It's obvious that Nintendo alone is having way too much trouble selling the system, and that the lack of graphics are a slight hindrance in getting third parties to play ball. All the same, if the system had the equal number of third party releases as the other two systems, and a better launch, I think this whole situation would be more in Nintendo's favor.

Most likely. I think Nintendo may try to make the system easier to program. Something more comparable to the other two systems even if it won't be "as" powerful. That barrier to entry really did hurt the Wii U.

My guess is Nintendo's next system will still be less powerful than the competition, but it will be within a competitive range regardless. They'll also make it easier to develop for and likely keep things consistent between the handheld and console as well.

Honestly, I think costs are the only thing that prevented Ninty from going that far. That gamepad is friggin' expensive - it says a lot that this is to memory the first console they ever sold at a lost, easily recoup-able or no.

I doubt Ninty's next console will be a mere graphical update, but one can only hope their options have grown a lot cheaper by then.

I'm not really sure about bringing game development for both platforms. It could put a lot of 3rd Parties off since they'd have to lower the performance to run on the next handheld, which would just be extra work. And how comparable will the specs have to be. The console will be going up against the PS5 and Xbox 4, so at the very least it should be in their range, even if it is still weaker. But if it is, will they be able to make a handheld that can easily get the games down ported at a affordable price?

I'm not a tech guy, though, so I don't know..

This is actually more hints to Nintendo's next idea for a console handheld hybrid. The chalk is on the board for sure now. They're gonna do a handheld console hybrid for their next console that has better integration than the 3DS and Wii U have had.

That's not true. His comments point at the opposite. We'll be getting a new handheld and a new console, but their architecture will be the same and they'll be able to play the same games with different specs. Something like iPhone/iPad or the Steam Machines.

I see it as a greater extension of what they're trying to do with the Wii U, when I hear things like that.

I can see it being a bit like the PS4 and Vita, the handheld can connect with the console and be used as an additional controller/screen and for remote play.

I'd much rather it be completely portable, singular device, with the ability to plug into the TV for certain game modes or an alternate viewing experience. Third Party devs from the handheld scene would still be able to cater to their audience and support Nintendo's "home" console at the same time, and first party support would be a constant stream of games, due to the doubled output rate. Everyone wins!

Stores need to stop confusing people further by doing shit like that. Amiibos don't work with Wii.

Chances are, the person who made the ad just assumed that they'd function with the Wii and DS.

It's more a family thing than any other, really.

Anyone other than specialist gaming stores and Amazon still think Wii and WiiU are the same, just as with 3DS and DS. They've got better at that since, but not everyone.

https://kevincallahangames.wordpress.com/2014/07/09/the-strange-development-of-diddy-kong-racing-2/

Another rumor. This one's about Diddy Kong Racing 2. This guy claims to be an insider on the development of the project. Apparantly Monster Games and Retro Studios have been working on it for a while, but it's been through a bit of development hell.

Quoted some interesting tidbits.

Monster Games began planning out a traditional sequel to Diddy Kong Racing. Representatives from Nintendo suggested that Diddy Kong Racing 2 should be as different from the Mario Kart series as possible.  Nintendo believed that the Diddy Kong Racing series couldn’t co-exist in the marketplace with Mario Kart unless it offered a completely different, unique experience.

This lead to a solution.  Riding animals was a large focus in the Donkey Kong Country series.  Monster Games brainstormed the idea of having vehicles that could transform into animals from Donkey Kong Country. Each vehicle would have special abilities based on whatever animal it was represented by.

Before Diddy Kong Racing, Diddy Kong had always seemed like a sidekick more than a star. Tanabe thought that the concept of lesser known Nintendo characters “fighting to be Nintendo’s big star” could prove to be interesting for Diddy Kong Racing. Characters such as Mallo (Pushmo) and Rusty  (Rusty’s Real Deal Baseball) were also added as racers to fill out the roster.

I’ll leave you with one final thought:  Ask yourself why Diddy Kong was playable in Mario Kart: Double Dash and Mario Kart Wii, but not in Mario Kart 3DS or Mario Kart 8 for Wii U?

Hmm, that sounds interesting! I've never played Diddy Kong Racing, was it good? I wonder which system the sequel will come out on though....

It was arguably the best racing game on N64 and had a unique concept that holds up pretty well and its still a pretty good kart racing game today, in my eyes atleast, just wish its tracks were a bit longer since they're very short.

Project Cars on Wii U being delayed to 2015 is so stupid.

The hype will be over.

It will be over-priced.

It will be inferior to the other versions (well, it is already)

People who wanted the game would already buy it for a different platform.

It's a huge mess and it's going to bomb in sales. Rayman Legends, Watch Dogs, and now Project Cars.

“Those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it.”

We should probably give up on there being more than a handful more multi-platform games on the Wii U that'll be any good at all, and treated as well as their brothers on other systems.

I don't get with all these delays, because if Ubisoft really wants to get some profit off of the Wii U, they should stop delaying their games and maybe add a feature or two.

In other interesting news, 2 days ago Megaman Battle Network got released in the Japan Eshop as a Wii U Virtual Console Title. Since it's been confirmed it's coming to America, i'm guessing it's coming pretty soon. Or, in a couple months.

Found this on Reddit but this was also posted in the 3DS thread. That's a pretty good deal on a Wii U Pro Controller.
