Who is this evil-ancient enemy?

Well, if I were doing it, there wouldn't be an ancient evil enemy because ancient evil enemies are reeeeeeeaaaaallly overdone in Sonic.

As for who it is, we don't know. I feel very insecure about having another one, because every time we get a new enemy, Eggman gets the lowercard villain treatment.

From the looks of things, then it's probably - broadly speaking - the usual ancient technologically-advanced civilisation that was devastated by a disaster but has now reawakened and wants to retake its rightful place in the world.  I'd expect it to be more complicated than just the cliché, though.  It's a good jumping-off point for something more developed and interesting.  For Eggman's role, incidentally, I'm hoping that he'll have discovered the ancient enemy and will have set himself up as a sinister advisor, apparently betraying humanity (and, uh, anthromanity) but really planning to seize the power of the ancients for himself.

As to what the enemy might look like, I've speculated before that - now, where's that image.  Ah, here we go.  Second row, far left side, the snake chappy in the robot armour from this image:

Given that that armour resembles the technological level of the enemy robots far more than anything else - if you look at all of the other characters and the general setting, it looks low-tech in the extreme outside what Eggman's capable of - then I think the snake might be one of the ancient evil enemies.  It's difficult to otherwise account for the snake character's technological modifications.  They needed to invent robotic armour because, as snakes, it's otherwise very difficult for them to build anything or perform delicate movements.

Ah, at this point, I'm just hoping the ancient evil enemy doesn't go "roflstomp" on Eggman as Sonic game after Sonic game has pretty much done to him. Only ancientish evil creature that hasn't done it is the Time Eater.

It seriously impacts his villain credit when every other villain is shown to be more capable than him.

To be fair, every other villain is a giant monster of some kind with borderline magic god-like powers.  Eggman's only human; he does well to compete as it is.

You also have to bear in mind, though, that as the recurring villain of Sonic, Eggman's role in the series is basically to be beaten over and over and over again.  That's fine for the cartoon, but for the game, reinventing him a little to avoid that might not be a bad idea.

It still gets tiresome to see him get constantly kicked around, all it takes is for him to show he's capable. Hell, Ganondorf is shown that he's capable, even if he does get beaten a lot. But Eggman, they go out of their way to show he's NOT capable. They get giant gods to stomp on him only for Sonic to swoop in and save the day, they had children throwing rocks at him to show they're not scared of him. Hell, they had Charmy Bee go in and kick his ass, personally, at the end of their mission of Heroes.

There's no to be fair, to it. There's no fairness for him.

At some points, I wonder they bother to keep him around if they care absolutely nothing about his character. They rather throw in monsters of the week, why bother to keep Eggman especially if they don't want to treat him decently? They may as well do away with him all together.

I don't want that. What I want is him to be toughen up and show he can be a threat. But that's well beyond the capacity of Sonic Team, apparently.

As someone who honestly doesn't care for Eggman, I really hope this new enemy doesn't end up being another oneshot character that gets beaten into submission at the end of the game and is never seen again. There are too many of those in the main series already.

Well, after seeing the huge echidna statue in the game trailer...I'd say the main enemy just might be some sort of revived ancient echidna leader of some sort. Maybe one of Knuckles's ancestors?

And as for the giant worm thing at the end of the trailer...my thought is that it's a creature controlled by the ancient echidna guy to destroy intruders or something. I dunno, but then again, nobody knows yet except the people behind Sonic Boom themselves.

The ancient enemy will be Eggman himself who was sealed away for generations after he destroyed the world resulting in a new anthro race to populate the world in his absence that was originally created by his grandfather Professor Gerald to save the doctor's sister dying of an incurable disease. The military at the time betrayed Eggman's grandfather, killed Eggman's sister and all his family so he destroyed the world in revenge, but was sealed away in suspended animation for hundreds of years and in that time Gerald's new race flourish, almost completely replacing the human race in the process.

...ok, probably not, but it'd be funny if that was the case in this continuity.

I don't think it'll be echidnas.

Because Penders.

Maybe it will be an ancient race, and then there will be a "we ruled this world long before you, it's ours!" storyline.

Somehow, I think he would be that unreasonable.

After all those comments of his, I'm putting nothing past him.

Incidentally, I would like to see this "anicent evil" be a character that wiped out most of the echidnas out of jealousy, and later revived years later. He could go after Knuckles in an attempt to "finish the job," so to speak. I don't think it'll happen, in fact, it sounds contrived, but you never know...

I too am sick and tired of these god monsters always usurping Dr. Eggman as the final boss, so I hope this is the only game in the Sonic Boom series that'll do that "ancient evil" thing. I'm hoping this "ancient evil" is actually a machine sentient being built from a long lost civilization, which from the looks of the mechanical worm at the near end of that trailer might be an indicator that it is not of Dr. Eggman's creation.

From the sound of the show, Eggman might be treated more like a comedy villain than an actual threatening one. It wouldn't surprise me if he ended up getting sidelined by the "ANCIENT EVIL GUY" considering that they said the ancient evil was "more evil than Eggman" and that BRB is taking inspiration from the Adventure-Unleashed era.

If that's true, then my interest for Boom might drop big time. dry.png

I don't mind it so much in the show. The show itself seems to be entirely built up of Colors-humor and doesn't have my interest. However, based on a few behind the scenes voice thing, it seems everyone in that show gets a little of silly misfortune here and there.  So, meh. Whatever.

The game, however, seems like it has more dark elements and seems to have a more serious situation. If true, then I want Eggman to be treated better than the past games have given him.

There seems to be some promise that he will be treated better. There was one interview where Frost spoke about the design and how he's meant to be looking more threatening and how when he appears it's supposed to be a big deal, there's of course a post, on here, where he states something to the effect here:

We wanted to keep the egg motif with him, but also wanted him to be more formidable in his appearance. So, one day, we had this epiphany and rotated the egg shape upside down.

But he also did reply to some of my own snarkiness on the SEGA forums, though vague it could mean a lot of things:

But, "not quite" can mean a lot of things.

I'm willing to give that Big Red Button ISN'T Sonic Team, but that doesn't mean that Eggman won't be punked out again. That doesn't mean this game will show Eggman being a strong villain.

Sure, Lost World did some good for him, but it just said "screw it" and threw it out the window by the end of the game -- seriously, all he had to do was get a good strike on Zavok before the predictable betrayal.

I wouldn't be so cautious about it if it weren't for the past. I wouldn't even mind it so much if Eggman had villain credit to spend. I just tire of this series just doing what they can to go "Yeah, our main villain is a wimp. lol funny right?" Ugh.

It would shut me up if Eggman was the one to take down the new villain and not Sonic. But, of course, it would have to happen on screen and not just easily ignored like the Time Eater was with their off screen.

If it wasn't for the fact that BRB are behind Boom's plot rather than Sonic Team, I actually wouldn't be surprised if they did go with echidnas because of Penders, to re-establish echidnas as a Sonic Team thing and put the kibosh on Penders's attempts to hijack them.

I just had an idea.

What if the evil enemy was... wait for it.

Grand Imperator Ix

How, well we know about the gigantic echidna statue in the beginning of the trailer that he is possibly going to be a Echidna.

The screenshots are also in a Sonic Chronicles kind of art-style.

What do you think?

About the whole Eggman thing. I think that it was only an annoyance in some of the plots. Like for the first ever game to do it [sA1] I felt it alright because Eggman was formidable (for the most part) the whole game, it only makes sense that something he made on the fly as backup [the egg carrier 2] couldn't take on humongous giant monster. In SA2 he wasn't stomped by a creature at all but instead helped the Heroes defeat it, which to me, showed more of his: Bravery,  Formidably (is that right?), and maybe Intelligence. Then in heroes I don't know... He got trapped by someone clearly stronger than him. I guess he upgraded metal, got over powered, locked up? So can't comment on whether that was bad or not. But in Every game after that, he's treated as a comedy. Shadow The Hedgehog: background character, Sonic 06: Comedy by accident (sigh), Unleashed: Played up for laughs, Generations: He controls the monster... I guess.. SLW: Ancient Thing Deadly Six take him out.

As for Boom, I think that it'll handle him well enough, for a first game. The worst that could happen is they pull a Unleashed. Now I know people like him in this game but in reality he was indeed a joke. Even though there was some good banter and before he got punt'd he was threatening, kid threw a rock at him, falls over trying to kick his robot, his robot insults him. So as long as this doesn't happen again, I'm sure I'll be fine with what they do.
