"When did that happen again...?" The Sonic game timeline thread

Either Sonic didn't get the last time stone until Metallic Madness....or, actually you're right it was lazy design. They just re-used the design from Generations for convenience.

Sonic 4 isn't canon. It doesn't fit in anywhere and trying to make Ep2 a sequel to Sonic CD was quite frankly an insult...............to Sonic CD.

You could say that Sonic 4 is a separate canon to the Genesis games much like Sonic Boom is to SEGASonic. On that logic one could also argue that Sonic Ep1 is a separate canon to Sonic 4 Ep2, because those games aren't linked in any shape or form, only by name.

So long as Sonic gets the good ending, we see all of Little Planet become a good future in the ending sequence. So it doesn't matter when he collected the last Time Stone, because so long as he did then Stardust Speedway would have become the Good Future by the time of S4.

Sonic 4 is definitely canon though. I don't see any evidence to the contrary. Although it's fun to point out the Bad Future Episode Metal creates, it's most likely nothing more than a simple mistake due to laziness. We know that S4 happens after S3K. Put it like this...

> Events of S3K are a tied up.

> Sonic goes off on a solo adventure to stop Eggman again (this is E1)

> Metal Sonic is awakened. Episode Metal happens now in the downtime between E1 and E2.

> Some time passes and Little Planet is due to reappear. Sonic and Tails go to investigate.

> Sonic and Tails are intercepted by Metal Sonic. The rest of E2 happens.

The real question is, what's the point of E1? It might as well have not even happened.

That's probably because Episode 1 was originally designed as a standalone "gaiden" game. Then after they made it Sonic 4, they decided to bring in elements from previous games (such as Miracle Planet).

Beginning             <--- Beginning of time, gods and goddesses, Dark and Light Gaia things, Chaos Emeralds.
Very Far Past     <--- Cosmic space of nothing where basically any backstory or vagueness can go in
Far Past (approx 2000 yrs ago)       <--- The Chaos Incident; rise and fall of Knuckles Clan, Angel Island's creation
Slightly Nearer Past (2000 - 100 yrs ago) <--- Another cosmic space of nothing where basically anything could've happened
Nearer Past (50 yrs ago)          <--- Project: Shadow happening, ARK stuff, around the same time as Eggman's eggbaby life
Near Past (very very recent)     <--- Sonic born of unknown origin, after so many years travels world from Christmas Island
Pre-Game                 <-- the moment where Sonic and Eggman first encounter, since S1 was apparently not that
--------------------------------
Sonic 1                        <--- both must have happened in semi-close proximity since it was while Sonic was
Sonic CD                           still on South Island for the beginning of Sonic CD.. plus many other obvious things.
--------------------------------
Sonic 2
Sonic 3 & Knuckles                <-- Both of these together make the Death Egg Saga, hence their seperation from S1 & CD.
--------------------------------
Sonic Generations (Classic)       <-- Sonic, Tails and Eggman from the future meet their past selves making an..
Sonic 4: Episode 1                      <-- Alternate Canon split. Eggman out of spite of seeing future plans not work out,
Sonic 4: Episode 2                       starts pulling from and redoing past ideas in an attempt mostly just to kill Sonic.
--------------------------------
Sonic Adventure                           <-- These games, meanwhile, stick to the original timeline and continue where
Sonic Advance                       that left off. SA1 starts about a year or so after S3K, meaning the cast has aged a bit.
--------------------------------

Sonic Adventure 2                            <-- An undetermined time between SA1 and SA2 happened due to that thing

Sonic Advance 2                          with Tails and some emerald. Also Sadv2 happens here because Sonic and co.

                                                                     meet Cream, Cheese & Vanilla.
-------------------------------
Sonic Heroes                                <-- Shadow's been gone long enough to where he's had many clones made of him.

Sonic Rush                                   <-- Most likely happened around not long after, considering Sonic was in his

                                                                        "WOAH TEAMWORK" phase.

-------------------------------

Sonic 06                                       <-- Timeline split due to bad game explosion and writing itself out of the picture.

Sonic Rivals                                 <-- New timeline where Sonic meets not-so-crappy Silver.
-------------------------------
Sonic Unleashed                         <-- From here disacknowledges 06 due to timeline split.

Sonic Rush Adventure                <-- Guess this happened nearby?

-------------------------------
Sonic Colors
Sonic Generations (Modern)          <-- Begins the alternate timeline shift with 'classic' Sonic.
-------------------------------
Sonic Lost World                         <-- This just kinda happens at some point.

There's my headcanon timeline and I'm sticking to it.

What about Silver and Blaze? Sonic knows them.

I've always personally filed Sonic CD between Sonic 2 and Sonic 3. This way, the progression of Metal Sonic flows quite well: the more "prototype" looking Silver Metal Sonic in Sonic 2, the more accurate Metal Sonic in CD, and then the more over-the-top Metal Sonic that appears during Sonic & Knuckles.

In regards to the Death Egg, I saw it was Sonic destroying the Death Egg in Sonic 2, and then Eggman attempts to turn the Little Planet into a new Death Egg, before returning to Angel Island to give the original Death Egg another go.

Sonic CD came out after Sonic 2, so it's just easier to do it this way... that's the beauty of headcanon.

Eggman would still be on the Death Egg at the end of Sonic 2, CD can't happen right after that...unless he would give up on both the Emeralds and the Death Egg for no reason at all to go after something entirely out of the way.
