So Ace Combat Infinity is a free to play game on the PS3 right now, and.... everywhere I go I keep seeing people rave about it.

How the F2P works.

You start with 3 fuel tanks, fuel is used to participate in any mission in Ace Combat Infinity. You cannot have more than 3 Supplied Fuel at a time, and it takes 4 hours to receive another unit of Supply Fuel for free.

You can also obtain additional units of fuel, these are one shot uses, the way you obtain these are by microtransactions, or by completing various in game challenges.

Gameplay Modes

There's three modes announced with two currently live. They are.

Single Player: There's 8 missions (5 available from the start),

Online Co-Op

PVP (not yet live).

Now... the thing which is supposed to be awesome... is the Online Co-Op.

The online Co-Op works by pairing you with a wingmen and several other co-op teams of four aircraft competing to inflict the most damage on the NPC enemy forces. And you can be in charge of your own squadron going out on sorties with both friends and strangers in other squadrons.

Have you seen this!? This is a Co-Op mission!

Can you get rid of the fuel limit?

Yes, if you want you can pay around $20 which removes the fuel limit for single player (not sure about co-op/online).

Plane Selection

It's pretty much what you expect from an AC game, theres your usual jet fighters, as well as bombers (A10's) and the selection is quite varied.

So I've not yet downloaded it myself but... has anyone played this yet? If so, is it any good.. and... anyone wanna form a squadron?

I actually saw the trailer for this F2P game, bbefore posting, here's the "Engage" trailer:

Massive AC4 flashbacks and dat Invincible Fleet arrangement. I actually look forward to playing this. Thanks for bringing this up Hogfather. I was wondering what this game was gonna be like.

So, basically, if you want to get rid of the fuel tank limit, it's just a $20 game? Not bad.

I've more-or-less been playing this daily to get dat ADFX-01 Morgan. And just like my oldfriends on an Ace Combat forum I frequent stated, it's shockingly mediocre, and the laser is terribly nerfed.

On the other hand, the F-4G mauls ground targets like a lawn mower. Just got my Tomcat to Level 2 and will probably try for either the Superbug or the A-10 next.

As for the game itself, while the free campaign is painfully short [and the price for unlocking the levels with credits painfully high], the Online Co-op is where it really shines. This is exactly what an Ace Combat online game should play like.

Even if there are morons going after my ground targets in a MiG.

Ok... having played this since the topic creation here are my thoughts.

"It's good... but."

If you have friends, co-op is fantastic! You could easily plan attacks and who goes for what.

If you play random, co-op ranges from bloody brilliant to frustrating.

The problem with the game is that there are ground targets and air targets. Ground targets are easier to go for, but bombers specialise in them, however they're hopeless for aircraft.

So why then do so many people pick fighters and then  don't bother going for air targets which they excel at, it's really frustrating when you're a bomber and can take out so much only to find fighters taking your kills.

How it works is that, there's a mission and two teams compete against each other to get the biggest score, but those scores are combined to give both teams an overall grade, this is turned into money which you can spend on new planes, upgrades and... single player levels.

Yes you read that right.

You get 2 levels in single player, then the campaign is locked, and only unlocks if you pay using in game credits, and these are not cheap! However you can pay $20 to unlock the campaign in full.

the way the fuel works is as follows.

You get 3 supplied fuel tanks, you get 1 new tank every 4 hours.

Wait so... if I use 3 tanks at once, I get 3 more in 4 hours? Nope, you get 1 in 4 hours... then a second on the 8th, then your third on the 12th.

Now you can get stocked fuel, and you can get quite a lot of it very quickly through challenges and compensation (we'll go into this in a bit). The challenges are amazingly easy, it's stuff like 'get X kills in an hour' or 'change your aircraft skin' etc.

Compensation, Ace Combat rewards you will fuel if they get something wrong or do something daft. e.g. servers go down for an hour? Heres some fuel.

Or.... We put the wrong end time for a tournament, here's some fuel.

I currently have around 10 units of stocked fuel, I keep a good lot stocked up in case I randomly get a forced sortie.

What's a forced sortie? Basically a special one off mission in which you all try to take down a giant flying fortress.

It's a really fun game, definitely worth playing it every now and again. Anybody wanna buddy up?

I'm not sure if anyone knows about this, but I found this on Youtube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sAnxLJpeyLM

It's a live performance of Ace Combat Infinity by Keiki Kobayashi [Piano] and with him are Takanori Goto [Guitar], Mariko Takei [Violin] and Yukari Nakamura [Violin].

The songs played are: ISAF (from AC4), Zero (from ACZ) and The Journey Home (from AC5).

Gotta say, I really liked this live performance and their rendition of Zero was just awesome.
