Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal (3DS)

Man this looks really solid; Sanzaru knows how to make great platformers if Sly 4 proved anything and that shows here :).

The game looks really colorful, looks to control and run very well, the gameplay being much closer to a traditional Sonic game than the Wii U version, and in general looking much more polished and focused :). What I'm the most impressed by is how the game looks to play; semi-open levels with many different paths + playable characters that all control the same (everyone having the homing attack is a great move :)) + the speed levels looking fast and fun + the rival races looking to expand the gameplay originated from the Sonic Rivials series = a much more impressive game than what is shown off of the Wii U version thus far :D.

Can't wait to see more of this :).

I'm kind of getting Dimps vibes from this....but not in a bad way. It looks like they've taken the things that Dimps did right and given them a slight reworking and polish. I'm really liking what I've seen so far.

I'll admit that the return to 2D threw me for a few minutes until I actually saw the gameplay footage, at which point I was fully onboard: hey, better a great 2D Sonic game than a good 3D game, right?

Honestly, awkward as Lost World 3DS was, I'd take it over a good 2D version of Lost World.  I'm glad they made the effort to try making a 3D handheld Sonic game even if it didn't turn out so good.  Taking risks is appreciated.

Having said that I'm fine with this being 2D on the basis that yeah, we just had a 3D portable Sonic.

Personally, like with Zelda, I prefer 3D on consoles and 2D on handhelds.

I wish that handhelds would be getting their own things again instead of handheld versions, though.

This isn't a handheld version though. Shattered Crystal is supposed to be it's own game.

They're both Sonic Boom, though. Colors, Generations and Lost World had their own levels and gimmicks and at least Colors had new story parts, so those could also be counted as their own things like that.

I want something that's really it's own thing like Advance, Rush and Rivals were.

Yeah, looks naff still.

I think this looks a lot less naff than the Wii U version. =I I like how at least this one still has the speedy platforming from the SEGA games and not just Mach speed sections with slow platformy bits...oh, and fighting!

Still annoyed about Amy not being playable though. What a cop out.

The 3DS version looks decent to me and I aim to pick it up when I get a 3DS. From watching the E3 trailer, the gameplay reminds me a bit of the Sonic Rivals games. Am disappointed that Amy will not be a playable but, I can't wait to play as Sticks.

The probably only showed single player gameplay because the game is single player only.

Still annoyed about Amy not being playable though. What a cop out.

If Sanzaru Games get to do another one, I get the feeling that "playable Amy" is quite likely to be on their list.  The one thing I'm thankful for is that Amy getting kidnapped is a misjudgement which is being widely called out.

I also notice, incidentally, that they're always very careful to frame Amy as "Sticks's best friend," as if to imply that the game is a female-led affair rather than one where three male characters try to rescue a female character.

I gotta say, this looks pretty good.

The only thing I'm afraid of is that this game returns to the Rush-like "cutscenes". I REALLY hope the N3DS version to have actual cutscenes.

My impressions for Shattered Crystal? This game looks pretty good as well.

I mean it's cool that you have a access to Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Sticks at the same time and it looks like Sanzaru is taking the Advance approach when it comes to multiple playable characters. They will all play the same but each has a unique ability that differentiates from each other like Sonic using a dash attack to break open crates, Tails flying over air currents to reach higher places, Knuckles digging to reach hidden areas and Sticks using her boomerang to get to unreachable places. I like this approach, it's simple but effective.

The visuals looks pretty alright, nothing bad but nothing too impressive, to say the least. It kind of sucks that it's 2D for the most part but I would prefer a solid 2D game than a mediocre 3D game. *looks at a non-existent copy of Lost World 3DS* And the fact that the levels are structured similarly to Metroidvainia-type games, sounds really awesome to me.

Amy being kidnapped makes sense to me, she knows where these crystals are and is a specialist when it comes to ancient stuff, so of course Lyric is going to use her and extract info out of her. But it is possible she could break out or secretly help Sonic and the others get the crystals by telling them where they are, or as such. So no, I do not believe Amy is going to be a "Damsel in Distress" in this game.

The racing stages looks pretty to me but that's probably because Rivals 2 was my first Sonic game but whatever I guess. And my opinions on the music will be said when I hear it properly.

I'm actually surprised I've little to say about this but for the most part, Shattered Crystal looks pretty fun to play and also excited for as well.

Shattered Crystal Gamespot gameplay

The interviewer really stressed a lot of classic gameplay even when that Sanzaru employee slightly said that its different. Really annoyed me cuz it seems he wasn't paying to much attention to what was being said.

On another note. I really love the way the rival race looks I can clearly see myself losing a few lives during these. Way better than Gen 3DS rival races.

I don't think this could be any more separate though?  Unique gameplay, different character set, different story, different music...  I mean it's a companion game, not a "handheld version".  It looks to be as much a "handheld version" as Sonic Triple Trouble is to Sonic & Knuckles.

If Sonic Boom is a success there'll be more games in the universe and if that happens the only thing tying Rise of Lyric and Shattered Crystals together is that they released at the same time.

Really, to say they're "both Sonic Boom" would be to say Advance 3 is a handheld version of Sonic Heroes because they're both vanilla Sonic.

I gave this a try at E3.

The levels have it so you can switch between all four at any time, at least from the one I played, rather than being broken into parties of varying size. It was rather interesting having to switch between characters as the obstacles changed to ones only certain characters could clear.

It took me about 6 minutes to clear on stage; I presume average stage length is more like 5 minutes.

Overall, it was simplistic, but pretty fun. It was easy without being boringly so.

Pft, no damn surprise. Most people seem to think that slapping Sonic in a 2D plane automatically makes it classic gameplay even if everything was nothing but blocky architecture and homing attack chains.

Anyone checked out the music..it's good and sonic-like..

The jungle track sounds kinda Advance-y and cave one harkens to Lost world..

I'll have a more comprehensive review later this week, but I really enjoyed the 3DS version quite a bit. Like, possibly best 3DS Sonic game yet. Nuckles87 doesn't quite agree with me though.

The Rivals stage was more fun than any Sonic Rivals level I've played.

Olgilvie, what one did you prefer? I think I still prefer 3DS.

The music sounds very Advance-esqe to me, reminds me of Neo Green Hill.
