Top Fan Made Sonic games

GOAT

Recommended Posts

Hey all. I am looking for the best fan made Sonic games out there. I want to go on a Sonic game binge with a bunch of them. I figured SSMB is the best place to find this info out.

Can anyone help a brotha out?

Somebody took it upon themselves to mod Sonic 06 and add the Hedgehog Engine to the mix. It's still in it's prototype at he's what I've seen, but it still makes me kinda wish Sega had done that:

I also love this Adventure-themed mod of Sonic Generations, particularly in how they made classic Sonic into Dreamcast-graphics Adventure Sonic.

I'll get the two big ones out the way: you should definitely play Sonic Before the Sequel and Sonic After the Sequel. Really great games by the same guy.  There's also the Unleashed Project for Generations PC which is great and Sonic Classic is also a decent title.

Sonic Robo Blast 2 is pretty fun. Especially with online multiplayer and the variety of mods available.

I second this! Although After the Sequel is massive improvement on Before... also the soundtracks for these games are faaaantastic! biggrin.png

I like to play the Amy Rose ROM hacks of the old classic games, as they use a similar moveset to Amy in the Advance series. It's a different, perhaps more difficult way to play the 2D classics. (Still waiting to see if someone makes an Amy in Sonic CD hack, where Amy rescues Sonic!! XD)

If you want something different, try something like Sonic Nebulous.

It's fairly easy depending on the character you choose, but it's still fun to play once in a while. My current Profile pic is the redesign of Metal Sonic from the game, so that also kind of gives you a glimpse of the game's art style.

If you end up enjoying Sonic Before The Sequel and/or Sonic After The Sequel you will no doubt also enjoy Sonic Chrono Adventure which is also by the same guy. It's the closest we'll ever get to a Sonic game in the style of a metroidvania game and it is a wonderful game.

1:"Sonic Robo Blast 2"- Amazing 3D Sonic game and very nostalgic for me. Who knew the "DOOM" engnie was THAT great?

2: "Chaos"- It maybe slow at times, but it has a password system. You have to fight this boss that came from the Master Emerald.

3: "Neo Sonic Universe": It's a very good PC port of the "Sonic Advance" games. Same game play, same graphics, but the game's slow.

4: "Neo Sonic Godspeed": You play with Sonic and new fan character cast. The ending is extremely sad.

5: "Project Mettrix": Before Stealth did the "Sonic Remastered" series, I've known him from this game. This game plays like  the classic Sonic games, even retaining the powerups like "Fire Shield".

6: "Sonic Robo Blast 1": A very good game dispite it using th Klik n play engine. Password feature in here too.

7: "Sonic & Knuckles Flicky Panic": Sonic & knuckles have to free flickies from capsules and stop Robotnik once again. A very good game. It has chibi Sonic & knuckles.

8: "Chao World DX": You play as Cheese as you go and stop Dark Chao from taking over the world. The graphics are colorful, the dialouge is great, and the music's sublime. This game and S&KFP is made by "Lionsoft".

Are we counting hacks too? Because if so there's Sonic Megamix, the various "X character in Sonic 1" hacks by E-122 (Espio in Sonic 1, Charmy in Sonic 1, Amy Rose in Sonic 1/2, Vector in Sonic 1, Sally in Sonic 1, etc), Sonic Erazor, Sonic 2 XL, Dr. Robotnik's Creature Capture, The S Factor, Sonic 1 Brother Trouble, Pana der Hejhog, Sonic Paint.

...You're joking, right?

The fact that the masterpiece that is Sonic Robo Blast 2 came from that game is such a miracle that it Jesus himself would be envious of it.

Don't think it hasn't been considered, I even have some of the sprites done, however the Sonic CD dissassembly is at a pretty basic state of development right now, which would make it incredibly fiddly (if not impossible) to implement properly.

Agreed on Sonic Classic. Counting hacks, Megamix, the S Factor, Dr Robotnik's Creature Capture, and Sonic 2 Retro are awesome. Also, despite only being in early stages, Sonic 2 LD was a cool rare 8 bit project.

Sonic GDK Green Hill Paradise is a really good fangame IMO. Granted, it's only one level, but my god is it a huge one. The whole level is completely open, you can take the shortest route to the goal, but believe me when I say, you won't want to. Simply because, you're missing out on so much by not exploring the environment. There are so many places you can go that it's actually possible to get lost. But the good thing is, there are no 'main tracks' leading you to the goal. The whole level, the whole landscape, is the track, and it's not just a wide-linear space.

The whole level is one big island, not just a straight path like we are used to in Sonic games. You are encouraged to explore the whole island (you don';t have to, but trust me, you'll want to), and there are loads of really cool places to go. There is a Master Emerald shrine with the Chaos Emeralds on a beach towards the start of the stage, and yes, you can go Super Sonic.

The only problem with it is that sometimes it feels as though there is no direction, and as I said before, it's possible to lose track of where you're going.

Another thing are the physics and Sonic's moveset. The physics feel spot on. They don't feel too stiff nor do they feel too loose. Sonic has the boost AND the spindash, and also has the roll and homing attack. The boost doesn't have a gauge, meaning it's unlimited but the extremely non-linear level design actually makes this a plus. The spin dash isn't too powerful nor is it too weak, and works well.

Overall, it's worth checking out if you have a PC that can run it, it lags terribly for me but that just gives you an idea of how big it is. I really hope that SEGA go this direction for future Sonic levels, but maybe with a bit more direction to it so it doesn't throw people off.
