The problem is with version 2.0 they introduced this limit break nonsense. A character with level 10 limit break gets a score boost of 300%, which would have made story mode too easy. So they increased the score requirements. But without a limit break character story mode became too hard.

They shouldn't have bothered with limit breaking. They should have just introduced more characters instead.

Why? what maintenance would SEGA want to do with this game at this point? unless its to unlock the whole fucking game?!?! :D

 I see an weird thing  the runners league are 7 days but is going to shutdown before the runners league ends and cause of that none will get the ranking rewards.

I quit playing Sonic Runners the first day the company said they would be removing it later. I don't often have interest in something that will disappear soon enough.

I'm gonna miss my rare characters... Almost was a waste of my effort! But that's the risk of playing online only games. :Y

Played a bit this morning before I conked out so yeah. 

Sucks to see a game that has really good gameplay just become a failiure because of some stupid pay2win bullcrap. But hey atleast I didn't blew 50 bucks on Classic Sonic in this game like a certain Pox. 

( I blew 9 bucks on him and Green Hill in Dash :^) )

I'm really sad about this game, I enjoyed the heck out of it, even with the perceived problems people had. Wish Amazon Underground or Hardlight would take it over.

You spent all that money...for an online only game... =(

I definitely learnt my lesson after spending $100 on stuff for The Sims Social Facebook game 3 years ago. (Screw you EA).

Never buy micro transactions especially for a F2P online only game. Because all your hard work and spending will go all away 1 day.

Goodbye Sonic Runners. I want to miss you, but I can't.

Hmmm.. The game was supposed to end at 9:00 UTC, but it's 7:30 UTC now and it saying that it is undergoing maintenance. I assume that's part of the shutdown process, but it would be neat if they pushed an offline only update! 

Although I wish they hadn't lied about the 9:00 UTC ending. I was planning on playing one last game!

Although i didnt spend money on this game, i played it almost daily since timed mode came out. When they announced it was shutting down, i slowly cut my intake to zero. It still feels like something important has been taken from me. I have a backup but i wasn't able to save limit 4 knuckles, and get Blaze on roulette. :( But otherwise i really love this game and hope to see an offline version one day.

To me, the 2.0 update was an extension of its shelf life. At that point many dedicated runners already had most of the buddies and was close to completion. They might quit the game once they finish. So the team made completion a lot harder. But they did introduce timed mode and an improved roulette (approx 8 spins for 1 character) to balance the reward curve. Unfortunately, the roulette wasn't rewarding before (30+ spins and no characters) and most rsr came from early story mode. With lack of limit break characters and increased difficulty of story mode, players who started midway of the game's life found it too hard and stopped playing. Lack of ads probably played an important part too. 

Imo, they could have given character eggs to players ranked 75 and above, it won't matter much to rank 999 players who already have enough rings/eggs to get it themselves. maybe a guaranteed character egg with an x spins function. I still think it's a bad idea to nerf the max effect of buddies, it should be buffed, esp if wisps and power ups are nerfed. Also 11 lvls for a buddy is an awkward number. They should scrap lvl 0 altogether. There was a ton of potential for other buddies. If they can make o papa fit, they could have made final bosses into buddies. Making everything buyable was a good choice. Maybe collecting x no. of crystals/rings/animals etc could be a replacement for roulette. I thought ads were optimised before it was taken down. The loading screen was replaced with an ad, a pretty efficient way of saving time.

Just my 2 cents and how i think it could be improved. Idk i could be wrong since i didnt play from soft launch and didn't restart when 2.0 came out.

Tried logging in about an hour ago and Runners is officially kaputski. I had a lot of fun with it at first and I enjoyed going through all of the goofy new stories they kept adding through events and such, but I began to tire of it once it shifted towards competitive scoring and all of the events became just new music playing on a regular level or a new level/collectible without any additional plot to speak of. At that point, it just became a hassle to stay ahead of the pack week after week for the best rewards and I started playing it a lot more casually, only caring about grinding Red Rings for roulette chances whenever a new character hit.

I think it's no secret that they made both good decisions (Changing the weird "Fly characters can't destroy enemies on the descent" thing and offering more characters through direct Ring or Red Ring purchase) and bad decisions (Dramatically increasing the amount of points needed to progress in the story and adding default or repeat characters to the roulette) as they tweaked the game and so much more could've definitely been improved (Particularly in regards to character distribution), so it's a shame to see it go out on a whimper like this. Despite the issues, it's still my favorite of the Sonic mobile games so far. It had charming visuals, fantastic music, and made good use of the extended stable of characters (MEPHILES IS PLAYABLE. MEPHILES!), so during the major Sonic drought that was 2015, it definitely scratched that Blue Blur itch so much of us were suffering from. With Mania and 2017 on the way, though, it's definitely time to move on. Farewell, Sonic Runners. Thanks for giving me my Sonic fix when I needed it.

The game screwed me rather badly since December, where after scoring two Fly-Type Silvers, I never got a new character again, despite multiple roulette spins.

I'll do a full post later, but for now:

Most Wanted Character: Tikal/Metal Sonic/Werehog

In light of the upcoming Sonic games, I'm not gonna miss this game that much. Still, it was fine before they screwed it up, and it's  sad to see it go.

What a shame.

I liked the game in terms of the artstyle and the gameplay. It even brought back characters like Tikal and Mephiles, and characters in cute little costumes!

I stopped playing this game shortly after the Zaaz event, mainly due to the lag and the roulette.

Last new character: Metal Sonic (I think)

Regrets: Not getting BLAZE. 

 Final Character Tally: Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Tikal, Metal Sonic.

I stopped last year so I don't remember the last time I got the recent buddies and roulettes and stuff.

Was really excited to hear that Runners was soft launched in Canada and Japan when it was up (and SSMB went down because of it lol) and played it a good amount of times during the Easter event but never really picked it up ever since then. It was like a month ago or so that I went back to it and to be honest, I had fun playing through it. The gameplay was really good, the music and visuals were really nice and the cookie cutter stories were fun at times. But yeah, the Premium Roulette and the various other problems really bogged down the game and it's a shame that Sonic Team's first attempt at a mobile Sonic game finally went down today.

So far, I've only figured out how to use this on Android (custom APK). On iOS it could be harder and require a jailbreak. I don't have an iOS 8> device to test it anyway though.

As for control, I can add anything that's possible to tweak server side. For example the casino wheel RNG is server side, which means I can force it to stay on a needed position manually. Same for ring, live amount, number of buddies, other stats etc. The amount of points is determined client side though, but I can tweak it by editing the APK. When I release the APK (or an Xdelta patch to apply to the official one), it won't have the super hard score requirements that SEGA put there for a strange reason.

And for now, I guess I'll have to host this server at home, but I may buy a VPS later, which would be around 2 or 3 euros a month. I'll do that if everything goes successfully.

Never thought I'd be excited again. Though I have heard of some people trying to get a custom server up.

 

It might mean starting over on progress, but making progress on the official server was a hassle anyway (I never even completed the main story line T_T)

Aahhh! I'm so happy. Now those stories aren't lost. But is that the full Easter story? I think it's only the first chapter.
