Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games

You know, after watching Cobi's little playthrough, I'm excited about the 3DS version again and think that I might buy it. The minigames look hella fun so far, the graphics are really nice and while have the characters restricted is highly disappointing for me, it's handled much better than London 2012 3DS imo. Putting the characters into arbitrary groups in that game like that with no option to pick which character you wanted and no stats was very annoying.

Speaking of stats, I'm curious to what they are for each character and which groups the new characters were put in. It looks like they're going with the Speed/Power/Skill/Stamina route again like in Beijing DS. The first category looks like Speed, the 3rd looks Skill/Technique and Power and Stamina could be either the 2nd or 4th (I think that Power is 2nd and Stamina is 4th. Espio seems to be either an All-Around character or a Skill character according to what I saw in Cobi's video (likely the former, though I'm surprised that he doesn't have more Speed).

So, the 3DS version got released ealier? Doesn't matter, the real question is: Any great remix as usual?

Only in Japan so far. USA and Europe/Australia get it in March and April respectively. Dunno about music/remixes.

I do; there's basically zero in the 3DS version, unless you count the Super Mario Bros music used in Gymnastic Hoop (not even Sonic as it gets an unremixed rip of Wonder World). Then again, the handheld versions have never been big on the remix front, and the RIo-inspired main theme is pretty killer in its own right.

Okay, just saw the news for Mario and Sonic arcade and how it has a website, with unlockable characters teased.

It's cute how they're acting like said unlockables aren't in the goddamn trailer

Also there's event exclusivity in the Arcade version too. Huh.

Edit: Wait, actually that's a confusing point; Bowser's character sheet shows him just in Javelin and Hammer Throw, but Vector's character sheet clearly shows Bowser in the pool? Is that a left-over from the Wii U assets and he's not playable in 100m Freestyle, are the cards just showing their best events or did Bowser jump into the pool for the heck of it?

Edit #2: Yeah, false alarm. It's just specialities.

I think it's just showing events where the characters are especially useful. You choose the character before the event and I've seen two screens of Vector in Hurdles, 100m Sprint and the website/trailer shows him in Javelin Throw, Hammer Throw and 100m Freestyle, which sums up most of the events.

Those "secret" characters are hilarious. However, can someone translate the text beneath Omega, Rouge, Nabbit and Toad? They're not in the Arcade version, and on that note Toad is only a supporting character on the 3DS, so what does it mean?

Why are they still making Olympic games with cartoon characters?

Because of Nintendo and Sega.

The full roster we knew, but the stats have been scattered, so it's nice to have a concise list. From what I can see;

-Diddy looks like speed category, being backed up by a decent skill stat.

-Cream's actually fairly balanced in all but power, but that's not typical of an all rounder (who are usually fairly even all across the board), so I'd say she's skill here even if it only slightly edges out stamina.

-Rosalina looks like a more rounded power category character.

-Rouge is skill, no questions asked.

-Nabbit is speed, not surprising given his role in the games.

-Jet's like Cream, only with a speed edge instead of skill.

-Birdo seems like an all-rounder, skill is the strongest stat but only by a fraction.

-Omega is power. Oh no I never saw that one coming.

-Dry Bones is skill. Huh, I really didn't see that one coming.

-Espio's looks like a skill category character too, but with less skill and a bit more stamina. Compared to Cream, hIs power is more by half a bar but it's still his lowest stat by a good margin, their speeds are equal at three bars, Cream has a bit more stamina and they're tied on skill. Ugh, really tows the line between skill and all-rounder.

-Ludwig's pretty split between skill and power. but the other two stats are far down. Would that make him a weirdly specialised all-rounder?

-Zavok is power. Whatevs.

-Wendy actually seems more power than Ludwig, but is also more balanced. Could also be an all rounder.

-Sticks is an all-rounder, sklll and stamina slightly better.

-Larry's like Ludwig if he had a typical all-rounder spread.

-Wave is good in all but power, speed is her best stat (weirdly) but she has better skill and stamina compared to him.

-Roy is power my goodness.

-Zazz is an all-rounder with a very slight edge in power.

-Dry Bowser is--WHAT DO YOU THINK HE IS

-Eggman Nega is...skill? Certainly more rounded than his main counterpart.

-Mii's whatever you want it to be.

Sheesh, trying to work out who's what from that is actually quite a challenge based on that alone. Let me try and whip up the certainties so I can guesstimate where the rest are;

Power;

Mario - Dry Bowser, Roy (Rosalina would be odd to fit here given that Mario already has three power characters, to make it square you'd need two Mario for three Sonic. But then no other Sonic character comes close to fitting power. Maybe only the numbers in each category are equal, not the reps from either team),

Sonic - Omega, Zavok

Speed;

Mario - Diddy, Nabbit

Sonic - (Jet and Wave are the closest the Sonic side has to speed characters, Espio's the dodgiest placement of them all but there's literally nowhere else he can go; Both all-round and skill have more fitting reps already, he's the only only with a comparable speed stat)

Skill;

Mario - Dry Bones (I want to say Birdo for this too, Ludwig might go here or all-rounder)

Sonic - Rouge (Cream has the biggest slant towards skill after that, I think, and I think they'd keep Eggman Nega skill if they're keeping Dry Bowser power)

All-Rounder

Mario - Larry, Wendy, (Ludwig might go here or skill, but he's more likely here; see Espio)

Sonic - Sticks, Zazz

No? Only ever been those four. I know technique is a common category in other Mario games but not here (well, not under technique; skill is basically the same thing).

Wasn't  there a technique class?

I believe you're thinking of the Skill class.

Man, the roster really is loaded for this go round. Didn't hit me until I watched the video scrolling though all of them.

Cream's little impatient bunny hop idle animation is adorbz. As is Espio's over the top ninja stance. Gotta love it. The series has been using many of the same canned animations since the first title (warm-ups, some victory poses ect) but with such a new influx of blood, all these new characters should provide plenty in the way of eye candy. ^^

So it seems the Wii U roster has some differences to the 3DS version:

- Dry Bowser, Roy, Ludwig, Birdo, Dry Bones, Cream (oh boy), Omega and Eggman Nega are not playable

- Boom Boom and Toad are playable

...which would put us at the odd number of 14 newcomers instead of 20, so the others do still have a chance as secret characters that were simply not shown in the intro. Except for Birdo. She seems to be a goalie again.

Oh and yeah, I feel even more certain now that each newcomer will be event-limited here as well, with most of them in the exact same event as in the 3DS version.

Birdo acted as team members for Daisy in the 3DS version, so it doesn't exactly rule her out unless it's the specific pink Birdo [EDIT: It is the specific pink Birdo. Welp].

Edit: Wave's bike has her emblem on it. Hers is more lilac despite her not really being lilac.

Boom Boom and Toad however do indicate they are switching out some characters, so things are gonna get interesting. Characters like Charmy or Big actually may have a chance at being playable in this version.

Boom Boom appears with Egg Pawn though, so I think he's one of those filler NPC spots.

I don't think he is only a filler character. For the Rugby event, yes, but he's standing on the podium at the beginning next to Rosalina as well.

Does make a point about Birdo, though.

My that was quite a fun opening to watch! :D Also about the lack of the other characters; I'm betting, or rather hoping, that they're unlockable secret characters.

And it's coming in the 24th of June if I recall, right?

Liking that cover!

As for the intro, it looks nice! I was underwhelmed at first because it had no snazzy Marza intro and looks like it's using the in-game models, but it still looks nice.

And hey, if Unleashed and the Vicarious Visions Skylanders games can pull off beautiful cutscenes using the in-game engine, I don't see why this game wouldn't.

Oh MOTHERFUCKER!!! Of course they would do this! "Oh yeah, we'll finally make Cream playable; in the shitty version of this game! Here, have some more fucking Sticks and Zazz!" Fuck you SEGA!!! Well, that sure as hell is disappointing news. I was honestly really looking forward to this game. But I guess some things are just too good to be true -_-
