Good Things About Bad Sonic Games.

Recommended Posts

While the gameplay mechanics suffered, Next Gen had arguably the best execution of branching pathways for different characters in a 3D game. Compare all the different variations of Wave Ocean that make use of different abilities for example (making you play as Tails TWICE seemed superfluous however). Few of them feel just like a truncated version of Sonic's like some of the SA1 levels did.

I know alot of people dont like how Sonic or anyone is protrayed in that game. However the more I watch the cutscenes (i dont have a wii anymore so I cant play the game) the more I like him in this game. Plus I used to hate how he was in this game

Anyway, I noticed that while he acts like a 2 year old who had too many oreos, he still has his warmth and humanity. Even on the dark missions he still has "care" for his rival even giving him advice on the boss fights. Im not sure if I touched this before but this is from a different prespective~

This sticks out because Sonic knows that Shadow is mentally unstable in this scene and in the others. Im also sure he didnt want them to fight but rather not. When a character is that unstable they start to do crazy shit but in this case, Sonic knows that and wants to stop his rival from hurting himself. Even his own rivals, Sonic still cares about them. He wants to help, but the way the games written will not allow it.

Im pointing this out because while he was annoying I feel people forgot about that part of his character in the game. (I also think its worth saying, well the way i Thought it was, that in the fight Sonic puts himself between diablon and Shadow and tries to block his rival from doing crazy stuff)

Sonic Heroes: I liked Metal Sonic

Shadow the Hedgehog: I like the Buddy mechanic

Sonic Unleashed: Great Art Design.

Sonic 2006: Some levels like Kingdom Valley had a nice aesthetic. Some of the music was good.

Sonic and the Secret Rings: DarkspineSonic was a genuine surprise.

Sonic and the Black Knight: I liked how multiple playable characters was handled.

Sonic Lost World: Great Art Design and I liked the return to the series root.

Sonic Boom: Literally nothing.

Sonic Boom: Literally nothing.

I'd argue that Rise of Lyric does have some good points.

It has great animation with the characters having great facial expressions, the music is very atmospheric and fits properly with the feel of the level/boss and the voice work and dialogue is really top-notch as well!

Rise of the Lyric has cool combat playing. Modern Sonic should do that in a game one day. And cool music to.

Pretty sure we got that with Heroes, Shadow, 06, the Werehog and Black Knight with the combat. To put it lightly, people don't really like it except the Werehog, Werehog is bae.

I really think it's just utterly terrible. It doesn't reach the utter lows of 06 but I don't think it does anything well. I hate the music for one thing, I'm amazed Jacques was behind that. I don't like the voice work at all and whilst the dialogue can be good sometimes most the time it's utterly terrible. 'Boost Pad' anyone?

I don't mean to be a meanie :P , I just don't think Boom does anything well.

I don't know what bae is but I like the werehog and it adds a nice touch to Sonic. I want to see him to more combat like punching some wrestling moves maybe.

I'm personally fond of the stretchy cartoony style of animation really, also the 06 models look dreadful. They hardly express any emotion and the animation is extremely stiff so when RoL has much better animation by default. I don't really get what's so bad about RoL's music, is it really because it's entirely orchestral? I mean, Sonic is no stranger to orchestral music so yeah. I guess you could say it's generic but the music does fit the mood of the gameplay.

I love it when they say Bounce Pads and stuff, it's the fact they sound so enthusiastic about something so mundane I find really comical. And it helps that the dialogue does make the characters actually feel like they've been friends for a long time.

it's fine that you find RoL to be irredeemable, I find 06 irredeemable so we all haveour opinions and stuff. As long as we don't shove it in other people's faces and the like, we all good.

Hold up bud, I think Sonic 06 is a terrible game :P . Those two good points are the only good points I could think of. Sonic 06 is far worse than Rise of Lyric. Let's get that out the way first ;) .

I haven't really paid attention to the animations, maybe they aren't so bad. I don't dislike the music because it's orchestral, I'm a fan of Classical Music. I don't like the music because I think it's lifeless and sterile, as well as failing to match the tone of the game. This is all subjective though, so power to you if you like it.

The dialogue is horrendous, fact ;)

Again, it's all up to opinion so while you may find the music "lifeless", I find the music atmospheric and ambient.

But I think it's kind of unfair to say that RoL's dialogue is bad objectively.

When I mean that they do act like friends, I do really mean it.

Knuckles: "Hey Amy, there is a hammer bigger than yours!"

Amy: "It's not the size that matters, it's how you swing it. Care to find out?"

Knuckles: " itznawtdehsizethamatterzahahahaashasn Yeah, yeah whatever."

It's playful teasing like that, I find charming and cute. Even though, the team are in a "epic" adventure, they're taking it by stride. They're not too serious about it but neither are they not taking it seriously at all.

Lol, I was using hyperbole for dramatic effect :P

Yeah, when it comes to stuff like this it's hard to have discussions because it's all subjective. There are some stuff in the dialogue I like, but I just think it's a bit too patronising to the player at times.

I loved the character interactions in ROL.

Despite the story, I really loved how Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, & Amy interacted with each other in that game. The playful banter between the four was entertaining, and like Puli Soni said, they actually felt like a team.

Also, it's been said many times, but the soundtrack to Shadow The Hedgehog, Sonic 06, and Sonic & The Black Knight kicks ass.

Sonic 4 Ep1 - I enjoy the special stages alot as I play them everyday. I also enjoy stages such as Casino Street Act 2 and 3 and Lost Labyrinth Act 2 for the mine cart and the torch puzzles. The game has actually has me engaged in a weird kind of way. I know the game is shit, however, it's a fun shit. Still a terrible game. But somehow I play it alot and do a whole bunch of speedruns. Also, the way they emoted Sonic is pretty cool.

Sonic Lost World: Had unique ideas and went wild however they didn't work. I liked the story and the character interaction was one of the best we have seen in the series.

I liked the general idea of Lost World, but I feel the execution is where it completely fell flat on it's face. Having Sonic do parkour while platforming? That is a pretty awesome move. Trying to have a better story after Gens? Alright, sounds good. New gameplay? As long as it's polished, I can go for it.

What we got however was a laughably underdeveloped, bare bones story where the characters are all flanderized, the only exception being Eggman who at the very least gets a few badass moments. Meanwhile, Tails takes a nose dive into asshole-vile, Sonic acts like an idiot, and the Zeti might as well be a cardboard cutout. The gameplay reeks of experimentation, and is generally nowhere near as polished as what it could be. The level gimmicks are as cheap and unfun as ever, the music is really boring outside of a few tracks, the graphics are great, but that's about it, and the gameplay in general is gimmicky due to the wisps, and being unclear on how several aspects work.

The only really great thing to come out of it was...

Hmm, okay

MAIN GAMES

1 Sonic Heroes isn't a bad game, but has bad elements, like a cheesy story. However I really like what they did with Metal's characterization. "I am no longer afraid", "Sonic, my loathsome copy", there is more here then "Machine rebelled" scenario, I also like Neo Metal design (dragon form not so much).

2 Shadow the Hedgehog: In Hereos I constantly though same Egg Pawns over and over. With that said I'm glad game gave so many different enemies to shoot. Also, while weirdly implemented, idea of 3-way war on Mobius is pretty cool. I even kinda like retcon about Gerald. It paint him as a manipulative hero, who tried to play Black Doom and GUN to save everyone, but pay high price for it.

3 Sonic 2006: What everyone said: Story is kinda good, ignoring time traveling headache and Sonic/Ellise romance. I really like Silver and Mephiles.

4 Rings/Black Knight: Art style and stories (more second game) are really good for  a "sub series"

5 Lost Word: I really thought I will hate Zeeti, but they actually kinda hold up, like Zavok being calm and planning, not Bowser mark 2, or the fact that this group of punks have elder they respect. Only Zeena is really boring, and yet she's the popular one, cause she's a girl...

6 Rise of Lyric. eeeeee....uuuumm,,, I like Eggman I guess?

OTHER GAMES

1 Sonic Shuffle: I didn't looked at this for a long time, but I think story was... maybe not 'good', but interesting to say at least.

2 Sonic Advance 2: Speed gameplay makes it boring and I will NEVER get all Chaos Emeralds, but I really liked all the running bosses. Look at that, actual challenge.

3 Rivals 2: It's so rare to see Sonic characters interact with each other (not just Sonic), which makes me like Rivals 2 more then I should. For example, I like Metal Sonic and his ambiguous friendship with Shadow in this game.

I also recall during the Westopolis stage, he remarks on the people evacuating the city and feeling sorry for them. It's not as pronounced as say, your example, but also shows, for all his semi-flanderization in ShtH, his humanity and knowing the Black Arms invasion is afffecting innocent people.

How on this blasted Earth is Lost World a return from the "series root"?

How is a chappy Mario game, a return to these so called "roots"

I am just curios....

Sonic Blast (for the Game Gear) had nice and very colorful graphics (I think it's the only 8-bit game where Knuckles is bright red as opposed to magenta, lol), the same method of accessing Special Stages as S3&K (even if the stages themselves were unimpressive at best), pretty good bosses (from what I remember), and perhaps best of all (for me, a Knuckles fan :P), is the only platformer of the classic era outside of S3&K where Knuckles can be played. (That's even better when you consider how often his gameplay has been mishandled in the modern era, e.g. forcing you to treasure hunt and what-not.)

He's probably referring to the aesthetics and whatnot.

Soundtracks for Sonic games are usually great, so that's one thing. Shadow TH and Sonic '06 are both bad games but both have awesome soundtracks.
The graphics all around are good too, even in some bad games. Except for Sonic '06... the graphics suck in this one.

Guess that makes sense....

My stance on the game is about the same as Ryannumber, great concept, bad execution....bad story.....bad characters.....

Shadow is awful, but there are a few really good levels which are so good it's almost jarring.

The first is Lethal Highway. While the Hero mission sucks, the Dark mission is essentially this game's Speed/Radical Highway, only with the aliens still invading. I thought this was a really fun level as things get blasted to bits and alien slime starts getting everywhere. The second is GUN Fortress, which is incredibly somber with it's style and it's music, especially in a game full of guitars. It's the bleakest point and the darkest segment, with the military retreating to their final base in desperation and the level really gets that across. It's also fast, fluid, and fun. Lava Shelter's pretty good too.

Finally, Circus Park, which is imo by far the game's best level for being the only one with decent level design and honestly a hell of a lot of good level gimmicks and a Sonicy atmosphere. There's literally so much stuff going on and it's so vibrant that this could have been plonked in a normal Sonic game and nobody would have minded. It's also got a nice shout out to the barrels in Carnival Night too! Sonic games are best when they have either unique setpieces or lots of level gimmicks, so Circus Park is a winner for me.

The 06 game also has several genius areas that are only hindered by automation. One good example is Kingdom Valley, where the first area is ridiculously open ended (you can jump on the eagle that flies above you at the start!) and has good level design throughout, or Sonic's Dusty Desert, which is also really open ended. I also really appreciate segments such as the last part of Sonic's White Acropolis, where the goal is to figure out where to go, only you've got opportunities to break the track as it were. Aquatic Base also has a great atmosphere for a final level, and you don't really get that often in a Sonic game. And of course, there's Crisis City, but Generations made that awesome anyway. Notice these are all in Sonic's run. Most of the rest of it is pure shit.

Sonic And The Secret Rings: I love the soundtrack, the presentation, the soundtrack, the bonuses you get from the game like concept art, the soundtrack and I did enjoy the party mode.

Did I mention the soundtrack?

Sonic Free Riders: I like the soundtrack and the game is nice to look at.
