Pokemon Sun/Moon PLUS ULTRA (Alola Region Games)

That dragon is incredible. I've rarely, if ever, had a Fighting type on my team but with this beaut and Crabrawler, I might just end up with two!

Type: Null's evolution is super sweet too. (BUT THE DRAGON IS BETTER)

Oh and here's the other CoroCoro page for convenience (although there are no new Pokemon. We haven't seen Ilima, the first trial captain, before though have we?)

Oh good. That's a relief...

Now, regarding Brionne's appearance, it looks very female, so it can cause some confusion

Welp time to give my thoughts about the Coro leaks.

Spoiler

Firstly let me get this out of the way. The Type: Null line is my second favorite set of Gen 7 Pokemon next to Mimikyu. Silvadi looked great the moment I was revealed and somehow I hear everyone cheering over it. I think it looks great and it has a neat ability that's much like Arceus. With this knowledge makes you wonder if Silvadi was based on him.

Secondly Jararanga looks great. I'm honestly they showed the entire line within what? 2 months? Dragon and Fighting give it great STAB coverage which does hit a lot of things. However I'm worried it might the Hydreigon treatment in the meta for being 4x weak to Fairy and its second typing doesn't benefit from taking them on. Its really up to stats and abilities at that point.

And Poison/Dark Grimer? Ok? I didn't like Grimer/Muk before and this doesn't honestly help. I'll take Drapion over it.

*Silvally*

I've heard Sonally so many times before, and Shadally due to M:XYL, but that's a new ship to me.

Wait, is Kommo-o supposed to be based on the Komodo Dragon? Nice.

And Tsareena is like a whole species of Zeena. Not so nice.

Is Alolan Muk related to the Greedy from Raggedy Ann?

RKS System

RKS sounds like Arceus

bruh

Anyways I guess that confirms that it's pronounced with a hard C, good. >:^)

These are some cool Pokémon, and the new Trial Captains look nice too. Cool update overall!

Sigh... The first thing I thought when I saw Olivia was, "wow, there's gonna be a lot porn of her". Internet, what have done to me!?

With all the Ultra Beasts and Silvally and Zygarde, I completely forgot Solgaleo and Lunala are supposed to be the mascots of Sun and Moon...

.....what if that was a bait n' switch?

Gen VII is breaking convention. May as well break the biggest convention of all.

As much as I love the very possible back-story of it being a sort of Arceus type experiment, I actually prefer Type: Null to Silvally in spite of the clunky name.  Jangmo-o's family tree is just boring and I never thought I'd describe a Komodo dragon/peacock hybrid as boring until now.  Not bothered much for Bounsweet's family either.  However, I love Ribombee and the scarf it knicked from Boom Sonic.

When I first saw Alolan Grimer, I was disappointed that it was essentially a recolour - and a Dark-type recolour at that, just like Alolan Meowth - although I also think it has kind of a zombie vibe?  But Alolan Muk saves it; what a weird new take on Muk, but I really like what they've done with its colours.  I don't know if that kind of effect would work on many other Pokemon, but it looks great on Muk.  Hopefully this means good things for Alolan Persian!

Nice catch on RKS-Arceus above (I've never known quite how to pronounce it); it really looks like Type: Null is a kind of Arceus version of Mewtwo, or more likely an attempt to engineer a similar Pokemon.  I don't know if they'll make the Arceus connection explicit - I suspect they'll hint at it without actually naming the Pokemon in question - but it adds to the picture of a very powerful organisation in Alola with frightening ambitions.

One interesting thing here is confirmation of what I don't think we knew before: That kahunas have type specialisms.  I don't think we know Hala's type specialism, but I believe we've seen him using a Crabrawler, so maybe he's a Fighting-type user?  I suspect he's not a Water-type specialist as one of the Trial Captains already covers that type, and I'm assuming there won't be any repetitions.  I think there's reason to hope at this point that there might be enough Trial Captains and Kahunas together to cover all eighteen Pokemon types.

I'm pretty impressed with this gen to be honest. There's hardly any "duds" in design for me this time around and most of the gen 7 Pokemon look pretty appealing or at the very least interesting to consider using. The dragon line is ace, and for once looks like an obligatory 3 stage dragon psuedo-legendary group that I might want to use. Silvally has quickly become my second favorite Pokemon this gen right under Lycanroc, though peeking around Smogon it looks like it's just about everybody's favorite Pokemon this generation thus far haha. It's funny (this is my own projections but) because I almost feel like Type:Null/Silvally fill Mimikyu's personality better as this Pokemon that just wants to be accepted since I can see somewhere (anime, game, etc) being that Type:Null/Silvally is going to be bummed out about being this frankenstein monster of a Pokemon that shouldn't exist. I almost wish at this point that all man-made Pokemon had their own typing since we're getting quite the group of them now haha.

Anyway Bounsweet's line is adorable and I really like her ability. Speaking of new characters the internet is destined to destroy, that rock-based lady in the trailer is super rad, and really glad she uses a midnight-Lycanroc since I think they match stylistically pretty well. As for that CoroCoro Grimer we saw, I was kinda "eh" on it at first, but the Alolan Muk really sealed the deal with those moving colors and added...rocks/teeth? Either way it's looking pretty fantastic, and I love the entry about it not smelling anymore. I just can't wait for what it's shiny form looks like.

Pretty surprised we got all this though with the demo just like 4 days away tbh. That said I don't really think the demo will be giving us a lot of new information anyway, and more over just a toy to tide us over for the next month. I'm kinda wondering if maybe information will slow down a bit from here on out due to the demo? All I can really see being revealed between now and release are the starter's final evolutions besides the random Alolan forms in between. Speaking of, I'm actually VERY surprised that they've gone with revealing more new Pokemon rather than filling our thirst with just Alolan forms. I feel like these remixed Pokemon would be treated as more filler to save them from revealing too many new Pokemon before release, but it's been oddly the opposite. I'm just crossing my fingers that there's a large number of Alolan forms, and maybe even more outside of Gen 1. It's just such a good idea on getting more milage out of the Pokemon you already have by fleshing out the world more, introducing new concepts and possibilities with existing Pokemon, and giving forgotten Pokemon a second chance to just have so few/restricted amounts of them.

Anyway sorry for the crazy amount of text, but Pokemon has been like my #1 hype game these past few months and I feel like I never get to talk to anyone about it lmao

Silvally and Kommo-o are probably my favourite new reveals in a long time. I felt like this gen had too many weird and cutesy yet not enough tougher looking things - i.e., not enough balance, but here we are. Exotic but fun.

I'm really interested to see what the dex is like. Like what old Pokemon besides a shit ton of Kanto Pokemon because nostalgia whoring which is becoming a massive fucking problem.

Not gonna lie, I'd have preferred if Silvally had a more thematic link to Type: Null. Like, we have this Frankenstein's Monster Pokémon in a Spartan helmet with an Arceus ring and Metal Sonic eyes, and even its name makes it sound like it only just qualifies as a Pokémon. That's so out-there by Pokémon standards, it's cool. So to have it ditch the unconventional name and lose the helmet as opposed to maybe integrating with it in some form (maybe it overcomes its limitations and turns it into something that helps it) does kinda bum me out.

I'm also worried that, since this thing is trying to be the poor man's Arceus, it's going to suffer the same fate as Phione and become so inferior it's not worth using. Like, even if Arceus sacrifices its item slot to hold a Plate, it can learn damn near everything, but who knows if Silvally will have comperable versatility? It's certainly not going to have 120 in every stat, and who knows if Not Judgement will suffer the same fate of Techno Blast and to some degree Judgement itself (i.e. it's outclassed by moves with more power/effects and that don't sacrifice an item slot). Then again, the Drives never gave Genesect guaranteed STAB, even though I wish they did...

My problem with Silvally is more that it's classed as an evolution rather than, say, a form change.  It's literally just breaking a helmet that looks like something someone external put on it anyway, so I'm not sure why that makes it a different Pokemon.  But perhaps it symbolises this Pokemon taking on its own identity rather than continuing to live as a failed experiment.

Well it's not the first of it's kind. We've had those type of evolutions before

Here's the recap on today's Evolution Showcase and new character reveals.

Also, there is new Official Art of Dartrix, Torracat, and Brionne on the Japanese Official Site.

(Did anyone else get a Emerald Coast vibe from this trailer's music?)

Alola Forms/Alolan Regional Variants

alolan-grimer.png

  • Alolan Grimer
  • Category: Sludge Pokémon
  • Type: Poison/Dark
  • Height: 2’04”
  • Weight: 92.6 lbs.
  • Abilities: Gluttony/Poison Touch
Quote

When the population of the Alola region increased, dealing with their garbage became a serious problem. As a solution, Grimer were imported from other regions. They fed primarily on garbage, so their body composition changed—as did their form. What appear to be teeth in this Pokémon’s mouth are in fact residual toxins from the garbage it eats, which have hardened and crystallized. No method has been discovered to break down these crystals. Direct contact with them presents a danger.

Alolan Grimer is always eating garbage, but its constant hunger will cause it to begin eating other manufactured objects if it runs out of garbage to feed on. There are more than a hundred Alolan Grimer in Alola’s garbage-processing plants, and all of the garbage produced in the Alola region is taken for use as their food.

alolan-muk.png

  • Alolan Muk
  • Category: Sludge Pokémon
  • Type: Poison/Dark
  • HEIGHT: 3’03”
  • Weight: 114.6 lbs.
  • Abilities: Gluttony/Poison Touch
Quote

Alolan Muk eats whatever is in reach without pausing, and if it feels the sharp pangs of hunger, it runs amuck. It’s thought that its voracious appetite stems from an inability to maintain its energy levels without a constant influx of toxins. Toxins have accumulated in Alolan Muk’s body from its steady diet of various waste products and manufactured materials. This accumulation has brought about a chemical change, producing a new kind of toxin.

Alolan Muk has the same poisonous crystals as Alolan Grimer, but they’re not limited to its mouth—they extend from all over the surface of its body. Alolan Muk uses them to attack, just like other Pokémon use their fangs or claws. And these highly toxic crystals are easily knocked loose, making them extraordinarily dangerous!

The Grimer and Muk in the Alola region produce and store their toxins within their bodies. So, unlike the Grimer and Muk in other regions, you won’t detect any unpleasant aromas when you draw near one.

New Pokémon Evolutions

silvally.png

img_01.png

  • Silvally
  • Category: Synthetic Pokémon
  • Type: Normal
  • Height: 7’07”
  • Weight: 221.6 lbs.
  • Ability: RKS System
  • Type: Null Evolves into Silvally
Quote

When Type: Null gains a partner it can trust, it deliberately destroys the restraining device it wears. Once released from that heavy mask, the Pokémon’s speed increases substantially. Freed of the restraining effects of its mask, Silvally’s senses are heightened, and it reverts to its natural temperament. It has a wild nature, but it will obey a Trainer that it trusts. And to protect that Trainer from danger, it will put its own life on the line. Silvally is said to have been created to oppose a threat...

By inserting exclusive items into the drive on Silvally’s head, its RKS System can be activated, causing Silvally’s somatic cells to mutate and glow. The RKS System enables it to change its type, and its cells glow with different colors of light, depending on its type.

Silvally’s Ability is called the RKS System Ability, which no previous Pokémon has ever had. By having Silvally hold items that correspond to each Pokémon type, it can change its own type. Multi-Attack is a move that only Silvally can learn, and this move’s type changes based on which type-related item Silvally is holding.

hakamo-o.png

  • Hakamo-o
  • Category: Scaly Pokémon
  • Type: Dragon/Fighting
  • Height: 3’11”
  • Weight: 103.6 lbs.
  • Abilities: Bulletproof/Soundproof
  • Jangmo-o Evolves into Hakamo-o
Quote

When a Jangmo-o evolves into Hakamo-o, it breaks from its fellows and begins to live on its own to train itself. Wherever it can find Pokémon to battle against, it seems to appear.

Hakamo-o dances before battle to show its strength, clanging its scales together to make them ring out. When this dance reaches its climax, Hakamo-o bellows a fierce war cry to challenge its opponent.

Its scales make for fine armor, so Hakamo-o doesn’t worry about self-defense as it makes multitudes of strikes and overwhelms its opponents. But, as a result, its scales often become damaged and get torn off. They grow back immediately, so this does not cause Hakamo-o undue concern. In fact, it views the number of lost scales as proof of how ferociously it has fought, and it brandishes its bared arms in a boast of victory.

kommo-o.png

  • Kommo-o
  • Category: Scaly Pokémon
  • Type: Dragon/Fighting
  • Height: 5’03”
  • Weight: 172.4 lbs.
  • Ability: Bulletproof/Soundproof
  • Hakamo-o Evolves into Kommo-o
Quote

At the end of its harsh training, Hakamo-o evolves into this overwhelmingly powerful form. It returns to the land of its birth, where it watches over the Jangmo-o from a distance.

There is a legend that says Kommo-o is covered in glittering scales in order to drive away a great darkness covering the world. The reason these Pokémon seek out battle is to gain the power needed to defeat this darkness. When it detects someone approaching, this Pokémon rings the scales on its tail to announce its presence. It has no desire to battle against weak Pokémon.

Kommo-o’s greatest move is the uppercut. It swings its arm up from below in a punch of great skill and force, sending its foe flying into the sky. By raising its arms aloft, it can generate a force powerful enough to change the face of the surrounding landscape!

Clanging Scales is a move that only Kommo-o can learn. It scrapes the scales covering its body against one another, attacking with a great clamor. After using this move, Kommo-o’s Defense is lowered.

ribombee.png

  • Ribombee
  • Category: Bee Fly Pokémon
  • Type: Bug/Fairy
  • Height: 0’08”
  • Weight: 1.1 lbs.
  • Abilities: Honey Gather/Shield Dust
  • Cutiefly Evolves into Ribombee
Quote

Ribombee collect flower nectar and pollen to make into balls known as Pollen Puffs. These serve as food, and what’s more, they also can cause effects like paralysis or dizziness. Ribombee may use puffs to strike their opponents during battles. Some of the Pollen Puffs that Ribombee make also have relaxing effects or can relieve tiredness. These are distributed around the Alola region as high-priced supplements.

Ribombee hate getting rained on. They’re covered with fluffy hairs that hold the pollen they’ve gathered, and the rain makes them wet and dirty. Alolan people know that if Ribombee are busily visiting the fields of flowers, you can be sure that the fair weather will continue.

steenee.png

  • Steenee
  • Category: Fruit Pokémon
  • Type: Grass
  • Height: 2’04”
  • Weight: 18.1 lbs.
  • Abilities: Leaf Guard/Oblivious
  • Bounsweet Evolves into Steenee
Quote

The calyx on Steenee's head is harder than Bounsweet’s, so Steenee no longer worries about being stabbed by other Pokémon. As Bounsweet, this Pokémon may have preferred to run away from others, but now Steenee and other Pokémon can play together.

Upon evolving, this Pokémon’s fragrance becomes even more delectable, but it also gains a tomboy-like personality. Living together with one is quite the ordeal. As it moves around, it spins its calyx, striking nearby objects, but Steenee couldn’t care less.

Steenee unleashes combo moves using the calyx on its head and its hard legs. First it smacks opponents with the calyx on its head, and when the opponent flinches, it lands a whacking great kick. That usually does the trick!

tsareena.png

  • Tsareena
  • Category: Fruit Pokémon
  • Type: Grass
  • Height: 3’11”
  • Weight: 47.2 lbs.
  • Abilities: Leaf Guard/Queenly Majesty
  • Steenee Evolves into Tsareena
Quote

Tsareena has the nature of high-class nobility. Any Pokémon or human that approaches it with evil in mind will be punished forthwith. It even turns its fearsome glare upon its own Trainer if the two of them are not fully in sync, or if its Trainer orders it to use a move that will be ineffective. Only the strongest of Steenee are able to evolve. When this happens, the Steenee evolves with the blessing of other Steenee. It then uses its strength to protect the Bounsweet.

Tsareena is a high-kicking virtuoso. It has honed these skills beyond the level it achieved as a Steenee, and it attacks with graceful movements. At the same time, its fragrance mesmerizes its opponents, dealing them a secondary attack. Trop Kick is a move that only Tsareena can learn. It lowers an opponent’s Attack by showering it with blazing hot kicks in a style similar to that originating from tropical countries. It’s said that this Pokémon loses its strength if touched on the crown-like protuberance on its head.

Some Tsareena have the Queenly Majesty Ability, which no other Pokémon has previously had. The effects of Queenly Majesty are so intimidating that it prevents opponents from using priority moves.

Taking pictures of Pokemon can cause Pokemon battles.

Given how roundabout this type of encounter is, this could replace the Pokewalker in ORAS and be a means to get Pokemon with Egg Moves, Hidden Abilities, and better stats, all without risk of breaking a chain by another random encounter.

I wonder if there will be a legendary encounter tied to this mechanic (you can start a fight with it only by taking a picture of it while it's running/flying).
