Welcome to the Alola Region

alola.jpg

The setting of Pokémon Sun & Moon and Pokémon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon takes place in the Alola Region, which is based on Hawaii.

In Pokémon Sun & Moon, the region is made of 4 Main Islands, which are named after colors, while the other one is artificial:

  1. Melemele Island (Yellow)
  2. Akala Island (Pink)
  3. Aether Paradise
  4. Ula Ula Island (Red)
  5. Poni Island (Purple)

Alola Starter Pokémon

rowlet_2.png

  • Rowlet
  • Category: Grass Quill Pokémon
  • Height: 1'00"
  • Weight: 3.3 lbs.
  • Type: Grass/Flying
  • Ability: Overgrow
Quote

Rowlet can attack without making a sound! It flies silently through the skies, drawing near to its opponent without being noticed, and then lashing out with powerful kicks. It can also attack from a distance using the razor-sharp leaves that form part of its feathers.

Its visual abilities are impressive. The darkness of night is no obstacle to Rowlet! It can twist its neck nearly 180° from front to back so it can see directly behind itself. It has a habit of turning its head in battle to face its Trainer and receive instructions.

The move Leafage attacks an opponent by striking it with leaves. Rowlet knows this move from the moment it becomes your partner!

dartrix.png

  • Dartrix
  • Category: Blade Quill Pokémon
  • Type: Grass/Flying
  • Height: 2′04″
  • Weight: 35.3 lbs.
  • Ability: Overgrow
  • Rowlet evolves into Dartrix at Level 17
Quote

Dartrix is extremely sensitive to other presences in the area and can detect opponents behind it and throw feathers to strike them without even seeing them. This Pokémon conceals sharp-bladed feathers inside its wings, showing astounding precision as it sends them flying in attack. And it goes beyond propelling its blade quills in simple straight lines—it can even bend these feathers to change their trajectories!

Revealing a certain snobbiness in its personality, Dartrix cares a great deal about its appearance, grooming its feathers in every spare moment. In truth, it’s also a bit of a birdbrain, with a tendency to bungle things up. Once it makes a mistake, it sometimes gets into a desperate struggle to gloss over the situation and ends up making a bigger mess than ever.

At times, this Pokémon feels so bothered by its dirty or ruffled feathers that it can’t focus on battle. When it loses its focus, it sometimes even retires from the battle on the spot! It’s up to each Trainer to help Dartrix overcome this troublesome stage. If this Pokémon is with a Trainer who helps it through, its strength will grow hugely!

decidueye.png

  • Decidueye
  • Category: Arrow Quill Pokémon
  • Type: Grass/Ghost
  • Height: 5′03″
  • Weight: 80.7 lbs.
  • Ability: Overgrow
  • Dartrix evolves into Decidueye at Level 34
Quote

This Pokémon is able to move about while completely masking its presence from others. Once an opponent has lost sight of it, Decidueye seizes the chance to attack it unawares. In a tenth of a second, Decidueye plucks an arrow quill from within its wing and sends its hurtling toward its target. Its speed is astonishing, but not more so than its precise aim, which enables the arrow quill to pierce a target through and through from half a mile or more away! Decidueye usually acts very cool, but it can become terribly flustered in unexpected situations like a surprise attack.

Spirit Shackle is a Ghost-type physical move that only Decidueye can learn. An opponent hit with this move will become unable to flee from battle or switch out for an ally.

A skilled Decidueye can boast acrobatic curved shots. It seems some are also able to shoot arrows that reach up through the sky, only to come drilling down from above, piercing multiple targets one after another.

litten_2.png

  • Litten
  • Category: Fire Cat Pokémon
  • Height: 1'04"
  • Weight: 9.5 lbs.
  • Type: Fire
  • Ability: Blaze
Quote

Logical but also passionate, Litten always remains coolheaded and doesn't show its emotions on the surface.

Litten can attack with flaming hairballs! Its fur is rich in oils and immensely flammable. Litten grooms itself by licking its fur, and then uses the collected fur as fuel for fireball attacks!

When the time comes for Litten to shed its old fur, it all burns up in a glorious blaze.

The move Ember attacks an opponent by firing a small flame at it. Litten knows this move from the moment it becomes your partner!

torracat.png

  • Torracat
  • Category: Fire Cat Pokémon
  • Type: Fire
  • Height: 2′04″
  • Weight: 55.1 lbs.
  • Ability: Blaze
  • Litten evolves into Torracat at Level 17
Quote

The bell-like object attached at the base of Torracat’s neck is a flame sac, an organ that can produce flames. Torracat’s emotions cause a rise in the organ’s temperature, and when the organ spits flames, it rings with the high, clear sound of a bell. Torracat attacks using the flames emitted from this bell.

Torracat’s mane serves as an excellent sensory organ, and it can sense what’s going on around it—even in the dark! It can also detect the presence of hidden enemies.

Torracat has a great love for battle and will attack so relentlessly that its opponents lose the will to fight. And yet it sometimes behaves like spoiled child in front of Trainers or Pokémon with whom it has built a relationship of trust.

The cat punch that this Pokémon can dish out with its strong forelegs is extremely powerful. It can bend iron bars and knock out large men with a single blow!

incineroar.png

  • Incineroar
  • Category: Heel Pokémon
  • Type: Fire/Dark
  • Height: 5′11″
  • Weight: 183.0 lbs.
  • Ability: Blaze
  • Torracat evolves into Incineroar at Level 34
Quote

As its fighting spirit increases, the flames that Incineroar produces within its body burst from its navel and waistline. Since the flames somewhat resemble a championship belt, they’re known as its “flame belt,” and the Pokémon unleashes moves that use flames from it. In the heat of battle, Incineroar shows no concern for its opponents—and sometimes even launches attacks that strike the opposing Trainer! As a result, many tend to dislike this Pokémon and keep it at a distance.

Darkest Lariat is a Dark-type physical move that only Incineroar can learn, and it allows Incineroar to deal damage while ignoring the effects of any stat changes that the target might otherwise be affected by.

If a crowd watching it battle is pumped up, Incineroar’s fighting spirit will burn brighter. But a lackluster crowd can make it lose focus or fight shoddily. When it receives the admiration of young Pokémon and children, it may keep up its cold attitude on the outside, but in its heart of hearts, Incineroar is immensely happy. It loses the desire to fight when faced with a Pokémon that’s clearly weak or injured, and it sometimes gets taken advantage of as a result.

popplio_2.png

  • Popplio
  • Category: Sea Lion Pokémon
  • Height: 1'04"
  • Weight: 16.5 lbs.
  • Type: Water
  • Ability: Torrent
Quote

Popplio's swimming speed is known to exceed 25 mph. It's better at moving in the water than on land. Still, when it's on land, it takes advantage of the elasticity of its balloons to perform acrobatic stunts and jumps.

Popplio can snort out balloons made of water! Watch it spin water balloons into a playful battle strategy!

Both frivolous and hard-working, Popplio can easily get carried away—unleashing enough power in battle to make quite a spectacle! But Popplio’s determined spirit means it can usually be found practicing hard on its balloon skills.

The Water Gun move attacks an opponent by firing a jet of water. Popplio knows this move from the moment it becomes your partner!

brionne.png

  • Brionne
  • Category: Pop Star Pokémon
  • Type: Water
  • Height: 2′00″
  • Weight: 38.6 lbs.
  • Ability: Torrent
  • Popplio evolves into Brionne at Level 17
Quote

Brionne learns its dances by imitating the other members of its colony. It sometimes even learns dances from humans. This Pokémon is a hard worker and pours itself into its efforts until it has memorized each dance. As it dances, Brionne creates balloon after balloon. In battle, it first sends its opponent into disarray with its dancing, and then slaps its balloons into its target, causing the balloons to explode and deal damage.

Brionne can dance in perfect time with others, even if they have only just met. On moonlit nights, you can sometimes see throngs of Brionne dancing as one, in perfect fluidity.

Brionne always acts cheery and positive. Even when it’s feeling sad, this Pokémon doesn’t allow its sorrow to show. It’s said that Brionne will only reveal a sad expression to a Pokémon or Trainer to whom it has opened its heart completely.

primarina.png

  • Primarina
  • Category: Soloist Pokémon
  • Type: Water/Fairy
  • Height: 5′11″
  • Weight: 97.0 lbs.
  • Ability: Torrent
  • Brionne evolves into Primarina at Level 34
Quote

As it dances, Primarina releases balloons of water into the area around itself, moving them using the sound waves from its voice. The sight of moonlight reflecting off its glittering balloons creates a magical scene. Since Primarina controls its balloons using its voice, any injury to its throat can become a grave problem. Its greatest enemies are arid environments and the overuse of its voice during back-to-back battles.

Among the balloons that Primarina releases, some explode when touched, while others do not. Primarina jump on the non-exploding balloons while they make sport of their opponents, and they use the exploding variety to trigger chained explosions!

Sparkling Aria is a Water-type special move that only Primarina can learn, and it heals the burns of any target it strikes.

Primarina’s songs have many variations, and each one changes the motions of the balloons. It has been observed that songs are shared among Primarina living together, so different colonies end up knowing different songs.

The Alola Region Mascot Legendary Pokémon

solgaleo.png

  • Solgaleo
  • Category: Sunne Pokémon
  • Type: Psychic/Steel
  • Height: 11'02"
  • Weight: 507.1 lbs.
  • Ability: Full Metal Body
Quote

Since ancient times, Solgaleo has been honored as an emissary of the sun. It is referred to with reverence as “the beast that devours the sun.” Solgaleo's body holds a vast amount of energy, and it shines with light when it's active. It has a flowing mane with a remarkable resemblance to the sun. Its signature move is Sunsteel Strike, an attack that charges at an opponent with the force of a meteor, disregarding the target’s Ability.

Solgaleo’s Ability is Full Metal Body, a new Ability that no previous Pokémon has had. With the Full Metal Body Ability, a Pokémon’s stats will not be lowered by the effects of an opponent’s moves or Ability.

lunala.png

  • Lunala
  • Category: Moone Pokémon
  • Type: Psychic/Ghost
  • Height: 13'01"
  • Weight: 264.6 lbs.
  • Ability: Shadow Shield
Quote

Since ancient times, Lunala has been honored as an emissary of the moon. It is referred to with reverence as “the beast that calls the moon.” Lunala is constantly absorbing light and converting it into energy. With its wings spread to absorb the surrounding light and glittering like a crescent moon, it resembles a beautiful night sky. Lunala’s signature Moongeist Beam attack releases an ominous beam of light that disregards the target’s Ability.

Lunala’s Ability is Shadow Shield, a new Ability that no previous Pokémon has had. With the Shadow Shield Ability, a Pokémon will take less damage from an attack that lands when the Pokémon has full HP.

Other Pokémon Found in Alola

pr_alola-770x562.png

Each of the main 4 Islands is home to a variety of 282 different Pokemon.

New Pokémon

pokemon-sun-and-moon.jpg

At least 80 new Pokemon can found in the Alola Region.

Older and Returning Pokémon

056-pokemon-sun-and-moon-how-to-get-maku

Certain Pokémon from the Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, and Kalos Regions can be found on certain islands.

Alolan Regional Variants/Alola Forms

a-exeggutor-770x562.png

In the past, when certain Pokémon from the Kanto Region migrated to the Alola Region, their bodies underwent changes due to Alola’s unique environments. As a result their types, abilities, height, weight, stats, and appearance changed completely. One great example of the Alolan Regional Variant is Exeggutor. The Alola Form of Exeggutor is taller and changes from a Grass/Psychic Type into a Grass/Dragon Type.

Totem Pokémon

p07_01_en.jpg

Totem Pokémon are giant versions of regular sized Pokémon that Island Challengers must defeat to complete an Island Trial. Besides their larger sizes, Totem Pokémon will have boosted stats at the beginnings of battles and can call other Pokémon to help them fight against opponents, causing Trainers to fight with 1 Pokémon against 2. Totem Pokemon cannot be caught.

Island Guardians

tapukoko-770x562.png

The Alola Island Guardians, aka the Tapus, are 4 Legendary Pokémon that protect the Alola Region. They each live on 1 of the 4 main islands, each of their names begins with Tapu, each of them are the same color as the name of their island, each of them has a shell that looks like part of an animal, they are all Dual Fairy Types, they each have a set of ruins where they reside, and they supposedly decide who the Kahunas of their Island will be. However, each of them has a distinct personality and their abilities create different types of terrain in battle. The most recognizable Island Guardian is Tapu Koko, a Electric/Fairy Type Pokemon, who is the Island Guardian of Melemele Island. Also, each Tapu has a move called “Nature’s Madness”, which automatically cuts an opponents’ HP in half.

Ultra Beasts

370px-Sun_Moon_Ultra_Beasts_artwork.png

The Ultra Beasts are a mysterious group of Pokémon that live in an alternate dimension called Ultra Space. In the past, they appeared in Alola through Ultra Wormholes. Each of them has the ability “Beast Boost”, which boosts the highest stat that the user has. A new type of Poké Ball called the Beast Ball was created specially to catch Ultra Beasts since other Poké Balls have a harder time catching them.

Type: Null & Silvally

250px-772Type_Null.png250px-773Silvally.png

Type: Null is a Normal Type Pokemon that was created specifically to battle Ultra Beasts. Once it evolves into Silvally, it can change its type depending on the Memory item it holds.

Zygarde

normal_Zygarde.png

95 Zygarde Cells and 5 Zygarde Cores are scattered throughout the Alola Region. Using the Zygarde Cube to collect Cells and Cores and going to the special lab located on Ula Ula Island will allow Trainers to reassemble Zygarde into its 10%, 50%, or 100% Forms. Finding the Zygarde Cores will also allow a Zygarde to learn better and Exclusives Moves.

Necrozma

This Legendary Pokemon has a number of mysteries following it.

Hype! Also, Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow are compatible with Pokemon Bank. I don't know how, but they are!

Pokeball ambulance (for pokemon only?  a traveling Pokecenter?) and a fire truck with a Wartortle as a water source.  And a very interesting hotel.

I mean, if it wasn't already leaked, it would probably be more exciting.

But some footage of the game would've been nice.

Gen 1 being compatible with the bank is pretty cool though.

I didn't watch the Direct but it doesn't sound like I missed much other than official confirmation. The compatability with the bank for RBY is weird though, maybe they changed the IVs slightly for those games?

Anyway, they don't really need to reveal much, they will just let the hype speak for itself. I just hope it's not just nostalgia to the point of the games losing their own identity, but I doubt that.

That's Red standing in front of the hotel.

With all those vehicles drawn, I wonder if we get to drive in one.

It's coming to 3DS - so you don't need a "'new"' 3DS to play it

that was my biggest concern, glad I can still get a hold of it

Based on that bottom right concept art, it looks like the (male) trainer is going to have a much more classic appearance, a la Red or Gold.

Sun & Moon look intriguing from the veeeeery little that we've seen of it, but the proof will be in the Pokemon. If the starters and the legendaries look cool, count me in.

The notion of being able to transfer over your 'mon from Gen I via Pokemon Bank though is very exciting. Might have to pick one of them up now!

I really hope that concept art hints at using cars in this one.

On another note, I guess this really is gen 7?  The narration mentioned the releases of all the main games, not the additional versions that came later, so I guess any rumours of gen 6.5 are less than likely now.

Remember what he said leading up to the confirmation of Sun and Moon though?

Quote

"*mentions every PKMN game* And in 2016, it all comes together, in a brand-new Pokémon adventure..."

Interesting play of words there. If that concept art of Red is really just a placeholder then sure, but it if's hinting toward the male player character's appearance being more 'simplified' like MK said what could that and that quote mean.

Anyway, we got no footage now, but at the latest there's E3. Plus we got CoroCoro for more static news leading up to it.

I think that's Fletchling in the top picture.

Not quite

250px-661Fletchling.png

probably going to be the quintessential "route 1 bird" Pokemon, tho

It's probably a counterpart to Feltchling. Something that evolves into an electric/flying type or something.

Probably; it's for 3DS, so I don't see why they wouldn't save time and use the same framework.

I'm really curious about this one, though a little disappointed we didn't get at least a few seconds of game footage, but I guess we can now speculate over the concepts we got from the trailer..I guess that's something, right?

On, and transferring R/B/Y pokemon over to Pokemon Bank sounds pretty awesome!

What surprised me the most was the fact that we can now transfer RBY Pokemon to the bank. I think I seriously might buy Yellow tomorrow and experience what the Game boy color era was like since I started in gen 3 with Emerald.
