Tara's Sonic 25th Anniversary Music Project - In Need of Artistic and Technical Contributions and Assistance

Hi, people!

As some of you may or may not know, I do music.

Music that is usually rigid and classical in nature, so not a lot of people on this forum appreciate it quite as much.  But that's beside the point!

Anyway, I'm working on a new track that is heavily inspired by Sonic music in celebration of the hog's 25th anniversary.  It's a slow, somewhat peaceful song that builds up and gets a little bit more exciting as it goes along, making use of synthesizers, electric and bass guitars, and drums.  Now normally when I work on a song, I just slap some art with it, upload it to YouTube and Soundcloud, and call it a day, but this time I figured what the hell?  I'll actually put some work into the presentation of this one.  And not just a small amount of work, a lot of work!  Some of this work, in fact, might be a little out of my league.  And anyone who follows me on DeviantArt knows that one of those things is drawing.

But then I realized that a bunch of you people draw, and wait… what a coincidence!  You all seem to have an interest of sorts in Sonic!  So if you like drawing and think want to help out, well, that would be greatly appreciated!  Here's what I need-

The video to coincide with this song will basically be an overview of Sonic's major titles (or as many of them as I can fit) from 1991 to 2016.  Because the song is less than five minutes long, that means I'm going to have condense the list down to a reasonable number of games that can be shown for at least 5-10 seconds.  At the bottom of each page will be a footer with the game's title and a picture that represents the game.  That's where you guys come in.

To give a sort of community feel, I need one picture for each game by a different artist.  To prevent anyone's feelings from being hurt and to prevent the video progress from being held up by a potentially difficult decision, I'm only going to be accept one person for each game.  So I'm going to list the games I need and whoever wants to do a piece for that game, reply to this topic with the game you want to do.  First come, first served (unless I talked to you about this before I made the topic, in which case you got an unfair advantage and reserved a space), although I will reserve the right to refuse anyone if I feel like they're not going to make a sincere contribution.

(Note if at a certain point in time, I don't get enough volunteers to do a certain piece, I will be open to letting some people work on multiple games at a time)

And now without further ado… presenting… some ground rules for submissions.  Please read both the content and format guidelines in their entirety, because they're super-important.

Content Guidelines

- Artwork must be clean and appropriate.  No profanity, intense blood and gore, or sexual content.  Also no obscene gestures or anything provocative.  The spirit of the video is generally lighthearted, so we want to keep things in an up-tempo mood.

- No memes unless they pertain to the game in question and aren't extremely belittling.  Which means none of this.

Acceptable memes might include: The barrel from Sonic 3, evil ham from Sonic Boom, IT'S NO USE from Sonic '06

Unacceptable: Something that paints the games in a crude or unpleasant light.  Basically if it would be found on a Tumblr shitpost, it's not accceptable here.

- The art should highlight something of interest pertaining to the game.  For example, if you were doing Unleashed, you might have art showing the Werehog or Chip offering chocolate to the viewer or something like that to signify it's about Unleashed.  Showing just Sonic going down a loop, though a common trope in Unleashed, is not specific enough to highlight the game.

- While I'm not looking specifically for professional quality, I am asking that some sincere effort be put into it.  Stick figures or really bad MS Paint drawings are not acceptable.  I define “really bad” as anything that's not immediately recognizable.

- While I understand that not all (and maybe even most of these games) are well-liked, try not to make something that basically defecates upon it.  We all know Sonic '06 is bad.  But let's at least try to appreciate the history of it, which is the main point of these pictures.  So if you're tasked with doing something for '06, you're free to draw a reference to some particularly troublesome aspect of it as long as there's something more to it than that.

- Artwork does not have to be new, so feel free to recycle something you made a million years ago.

Format Guidelines

This is a basic diagram of how your art will be displayed.

 

Note: Not to scale; just a model, actual aesthetic will vary.

With this model in mind, consider the following rules-

1) No backgrounds; image should be a transparency.  If you do not have software to do this, then at least leave the background a solid color (preferably white) so I can remove the color myself.

2) Bear in mind that your picture is going to be restricted to the bottom right corner of the video, so don't do anything TOO elaborate like a complex series of springs.

3) With that in mind, also remember that your photo will probably be scaled down to in order to fit the video.  So don't do anything that requires a huge resolution to fully appreciate.

4) There's no specified file size limit, but try to keep it reasonable.  Under 500 MB preferably, though if it's really getting even anywhere NEAR that, then we probably have a problem.

5) Files should be in .PNG format for best quality.  Avoid using .JPG.  Also no gifs as they're too distracting.

Technical Assistance

Okay, so you can't draw but you're very talented in the art of “having a better computer than most people.”  What can you do to help?

Well, since this video requires footage of Sonic games, and my computer isn't exactly some high tech gaming rig, it would be really helpful if someone who has access to capture technology can provide some footage (five to ten minutes or however long it takes to clear one zone) of the following games, that would be fantastic.  I have no preference as to rather or not it comes from a console or an emulator.  I don't mind the video being a little bit laggy since it's going to be edited anyway, but if the framerate is like a slide show, it won't do.  You can volunteer to rip footage of as many games as you want.  Upload them to either Box.net or Mediafire, if possible.

All artists who choose to participate have until April 30, 2016 to submit, although I highly encourage you to have it done and submitted before then to keep progress steady.  I -hope- to have this video done by June.  As I mentioned in the status updates, I have a recital in April, so I won't be able to work on it super extensively until after that.

Submit your art in this topic or PM it to me if you prefer.  Please include a name (if you wish to be credited as something other than your display name on SSMB) and a website or social profile (DeviantArt, Tumblr, etc.) if applicable.

Anyway, that's pretty much it!  Any contributions would be greatly appreciated!  I hope you have as much fun working on them as I will working on the video!  And remember, no refunds!

I have capture footage of a lot of Sonic games on my drive, I was planning on doing a retrospective a while back but gave up, so I have footage of the following:

Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic CD, Sonic Adventure, Adventure 2, Heroes, Shadow, 06, Unleashed, Secret Rings, Black Knight Colors and Generations.

Keep in mind most of these are like, the first stages of each game, so dunno if it fits your vision.

First stages are fine for some of the games since games like Shadow, '06, Secret Rings, and Colors have radically different opening stages than others.  Regardless, it's always good to have some archive footage in case something goes wrong, so if you're up for it, I'd appreciate it! ^^

Does the quality of the video matter much to you? Like I'm playing Sonic Heroes through a emulator and I doubt I'll be able to run it higher then it's native resolution.

Quality doesn't have to be super high, because it's going to be edited anyway.  As long as it doesn't look like a completely pixelated mess, then I probably won't be too fussy.

It's fine by me, I'm checking the footage right now, so far, For CD, I got up to Tidal Tempest, for Heroes, I got Grand Metropolis too in case Seaside Hill is too similar to the other stages, Shadow I got Westopolis, Lethal Highway and Circus Park, 06, got Wave Ocean only so may not be the best choice for it, Colors I got all of Tropical Resort, Unleashed, I only got the intro stage and I sucked at it so dunno if you'll want that on the video, and Secret Rings I also just got the intro stage and sucked at the gameplay.

It's up to you on what you want for footage, I can always record other stages for the sake of variety :U

Each game is only going to be on screen for about 15 seconds each, so I'm not looking for super professional gameplay. XD - And Wave Ocean is fine since I recorded the Perfect Chaos fight for SA1 as opposed to Emerald Coast.  Anyway, feel free to send them over and I'll let you know if I need anything more specific. XP

Alright! I'm uploading the footage I got from CD, Heroes, Shadow, 06, Unleashed and Colors to mediafire, as soon as it's all uploaded, I'll PM you with the links so you can take a look and see if they will work. 

Tho' just to make sure, there's no size limit for footage, right? None of these go beyond 1gb, but better save than sorry.

No size limit for footage since generally speaking, the higher quality the footage the better and I'm not strapped for space.

No rigid deadline for footage, but I'd like it as soon as you can. XP

Also, worth a note that if I get footage of the same game from multiple people, I'll list both people in the credits just for being kind enough to lend their assistance, even if I only use one person's footage.  So don't feel pressured that your efforts will go unnoticed or anything if anyone was worried about that. XP
