I'm resisting the urge to hit play on the videos and ESPECIALLY the music... It huuuuurts.

But damn, I've been seeing the gifs and screenshots. This game's art is bloody amazing, I haven't seen such attention to detail in pixel (or any kind) animation in some time. EVERYTHING is alive and breathing. The colours feels so right, this zone is poping out of the screen.

Seriously, these guys, Tax, Stealth and Pagoda are hiting all the right buttons, it's ridiculous (in a good way). I'm confident that when this game hit the stores we'll be blessed with even MORE surprises and mind blowing stuff. Seriously, they did what people have been asking SEGA all those years word by word. Like I said, it's ridiculous.

And UGH, everytime something new is revealed, this plays:

D=

I don't want spoilers, but Sonic Mania... I can't take my eyes off you.

Perhaps it's a Switch exclusive in Japan and not announced yet? wouldn't be the first time nintendo did the console publishing

That would be pretty unexpected if that were the case, but I don't think that'll happen. I noticed in the Sonic Toon livestream that when they were done with playing Mania, you can briefly see lizuka put down a controller that looks like a PS4 controller, so the most likely thing that I think will happen is that Mania will be a PS4 exclusive there, since the Xbox ONE isn't really the best selling console there, and PC gaming isn't all that popular there, either.

... Or maybe I'm just over-analyzing everything. Yeah, let's just go with that, lol.

They put in the classic EG symbol here which was also seen on the popcorn machine in Studiopolis. There is also those bottles that have SH2 on them possibly as a nod to Dust Hill Zone which Mirage Saloon has elements of.

Might not be very visible because filters, but the EG logo is also on the gun.

Not sure if anyone pointed it out here before but that giant ass gun is pretty much the same gun the Eggrobo had. I dig it.

I am so excited to finally see Desert Dazzle come to full fruition! I had a feeling we might see it (or at least some elements left over from Sonic CD mobile) so I'm absolutely thrilled. Really interested to see what other tropes will be focused on in the other original levels as well as which stages are going to be revisited.

In regards to the new footage, I love that hilariously huge gun. I think the Tails and Knuckles sprites look fantastic as well. And the posters of Bean, Nack, and Bark? Ugh I'm in love with all this detail and fan service. I just really, REALLY need to play this game. Now.

Next demo should be with Tails or Knuckles, in a new (brand new or reimagined) zone. Before Christmas would be fine for me.

Nailed it!

...Well, it wasn't a crazy bet.

The good bad and ugly whistle is undeniable from the very first listening. But apart from that I still don't think the music fits the stage. I like the track but I don't feel "moved" to a western saloon. Also, it's very similar to Studiopolis' track (in my opinion, of course).

I think it does suit the stage, but is just a little unorthodox for that trope. That's one thing I really love about Ice Cap's theme; it doesn't sound like every other winter stage out there.

I swear, every time I see this game it gets better and better.

Loving the classic momentum-based gameplay, loving the funky visuals, and Tee Lopes perfectly nails that kind of Sega CD/Saturn vibe that the game's going for. I daresay this is one of my most anticipated games of 2017 - I can't do anything but look forward to it.

The piano used does invoke a western saloon/bar vibe, and the whistle is a nice touch and nod to a western great, but I'm going to agree that the trumpets and the rest of it don't really give off a western/saloon feeling to me.

It's almost like with the horns they are going for a Rango'ish more Mexican type western sound...but it doesn't sound like the right type of horn instrument to pull it off.

Loved Studiopolis, but I'm a bit on the fence with the music for this zone. Most classic era music really suits the zone, be it from first listen, or with a couple of tracks, after a few goes round the block. This one....hmmm..I'm not sure.

I surrender, gonna listen to this music...

IN MY VEINS PLEASE.

Edit: I swear to God that some parts of its melody isn't strange to me...

I'm loving this new piece of music, but honestly it sounds more like it could fit an arabian themed level, an oasis perhaps.

I mean since Mania is going for a lot of elements that 3&K had. The relatively linear but very expansive and huge levels, the elemental shields, the 2 act structure with a mini boss in Act 1 and an actual boss in Act 2 and in-level transitions between stages. I'd say different versions of a stage's theme is going to be one of those additions Mania will include is a strong possibility.

I think it's just now hitting me that there's a real possibility that Sonic Mania won't just be as good as the main classic games, but actually better, and even if it isn't, it could still feasibly be the start of more incredible neo-classic games being created which eventually surpass the classics. I mean, I'm not saying it's an absolute sure thing or something, but I certainly don't think it's out of the question either.

That's kinda freaking me out in an amazing way.

I mean, it feels as Sonic fans, for a REALLY long time, we've had to deal with thoughts like "hmm I hope the new game's flaws aren't too crippling" and "hmm I hope this game captures 1% of what made the originals good" and stuff like that.

So the thought that there's a real chance the Sonic series might, sometime in the not-to-distant future, start to become better than it's ever been is mind-blowing in the best possible way.

Let's be clear, I'd like this level of quality to leak into the "modern" games too, of course, but even if we never get that, this is an incredible consolation prize, to say the least.

Right there with you, man. I've been a very happy gamer lately. Just the possibility that some of my all time favorite games (Sonic 2 and 3&K, Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, Pokemon Black and White 2, Wind Waker) could possibly be matched or even exceeded by these new installments of these franchises has me positively giddy. I'll always have my favorites to go back to, but i encourage these developers of our favorite games to expand upon those past games, take risks, and to best their past efforts and blow us away all over again. I'm usually pessimistic and cautious with most games, but I know with games like Sonic Mania and Pokémon Sun and Moon, that there's no reason to be. These games are in the best hands they could possibly be.

So, Taxman said that the other new zones will be all new levels, the only one "re-introduced" was Mirage Saloon, because they had a debt with Sonic CD (and Dust Hill for that matter) :)

So no more scrapped levels coming back to life :/ Sorry Wood Zone, Genocide City Zone, R2...

So far we have:

-Green Hill (ya old green type trope);

-Studiopolis (the night-city-casino-esque trope);

-Mirage Saloon (the desert trope with also some pinball elements, like Collision Chaos).

If each level in the game is very unique (and I'm sure they are!), we're lacking these classic tropes:

-Temple/ruin (could go with Tidal Tempest, Aquatic Ruins or even Marble Garden);

-Water (Hidrocity anyone?);

-Casino/carnival (Yes, Studiopolis sorta covers that trope, but it's more like a city level, than a casino or amusement park);

-Eggman base/aircraft (totaly down for a Launch Base re-imagination, throwing in some Scrap Brain/Metallic Madness/Death Egg stuff into the mix);

-Ice/snow (Ice Cap is a must, but I'm good with a brand new level);

-Lava/fire (Lava Reef is also a must, but a new level would be great too).

But IMHO, my ideal game would be cover the classic tropes with classic zones (ice/snow = Ice Cap; lava/fire = Lava Reef; temple/ruins/water = Aquatic Ruins, Hidrocity) and GO CRAZY CREATIVE with tropes that we don't see very often, like:

-Ghost/graveyard/haunted castle, ship or mansion;

-Jungle (we always have tropical green plains and hills, beaches and whatnot, but a deep, dense, humid jungle/rain forest-like trope isn't as recurring, at least not in 2D);

-A totaly ludic zone, like what Sweet Mountain was aiming for. You know, a crazy place, where regular stuff is skyscrapper size.

-Sky. Because sue me I want to run on the clouds, 'kay??

For a casino level to be in a Sonic game, there needs to be a pinball machine in it, and as far as I'm aware Studiopolis does not have one. However it's probably unlikely for one to be in the game considering that it could be too similar to Studiopolis. We'll just have to wait and see.
