Sonic Mania (August 15th 2017, Christian Whitehead, PS4, Xbox One, PC, Switch) - The New Classic

Y'know, considering that Ice Cap is pretty much the only classic ice level, wouldn't it be a better idea to make an original one?  I mean, if the ice theme was barely ever touched back then, then wouldn't a new ice level be almost guaranteed to be pretty fresh and interesting?  And as a bonus, it would allow them to completely dodge any legal troubles that might be surrounding Ice Cap itself.

My money is definitely on ice cap zone returning. That also had water in it i think.

I don't know...

My own hope for Lava Reef aside, I see something like Carnival Night being the thing to return since, to me, it's the superior casino stage compared to the ones from S1 and S2.

Carnival Night has no Casino elements or anything similar...why do people keep shoving it in with the lesser?

Since Sonic 2 is decided (for now, assuming only one classic stage per game) Sonic 3 is definitely the game where it could go in any direction as far as what stage they use. I think Hydrocity and Ice Cap are the most likely and given the point that was made earlier in the thread (that they could make a new ice themed level) I think Hydrocity Zone could (and should) be in.

However then you mentioned Carnival Night and there are a lot of possibilities there and with the "barrel of doom" being a running gag in the series as well as it having memorable music and some pinball like gimmicks (I'm really hoping those flippers in mirage saloon aren't the only pinball references in this game), I may have been too quick to write this one off.

Then again after seeing Chemical Plants remix today I'm super confident that Christian could even make Launch Base Zone fun

It's the best "entertainment" themed stage then, there you go soldier.

Plus it could cover a water themed stage by having water slides and such added.

Just saw the teaser for chemical plant zone Act 2, even more hyped for this game.

Just a thought, seeing all these classic levels I can't help but think of the possibility of DLC levels, I suggested such a thing for Generations which never happened, dunno about you guys but I would love to visit an all time favorite of mine: Lava reef zone with the mania makeup!

The most common theory that is all but legitimately confirmed is that Generations was SUPPOSED to get DLC, with Ice Cap being the most commonly speculated zone coming first at the time until the idea of new content vanished altogether.

I've said it before. It would be nice if they DO add DLC to Mania so SEGA and Sonic Team can get all this nostalgia and Green Hill mess out of their systems and give us a legitimately brand new game again. No returning stages, no returning enemies, nothing from past titles.

Just something completely, wholeheartedly new to say "We're done, we're moving on, please enjoy the future" basically.

So in case this hasn't been said, Aaron has said that they're not looking into full animated cutscenes for Mania, but we'll have to "wait and see" on seeing more animation show up. I think it'll be for the final launch trailer.

Hey, I don't know if anyone noticed and I'm sure this won't be the case but I just preordered Sonic Mania on my PS4 and it says estimated auto download date is 08/13/17 ... interesting but I don't get that lucky lol

There will be an animated intro and ending ala CD, of that I have no doubts.

They're not going to waste their budgets on such a thing twice in a row.

Im curious, where is everyone getting only 1 classic stage per game from? I thought they said before it will be big, and only 5 classic stages and 5 new stages doesn't match the ratio

I'm hoping there's more than 1 per game as well and I'm optimistic that there will be. If there are only 5 classic stages in the game, that would mean they've already revealed 80% of them and that seems like a high number

If so, that means most likely another zone from Sonic 1 and one from Sonic 2 will be showing up. I hope for 2 it's Mystic Cave Zone. For 1 it would be cool to see Starlight Zone, but Studipolis already takes the city at sunset/night theme, so I dunno.

I think it would be 1 from sonic 1, two from sonic 2, 1 from cd and three from sonic 3k- flying battery, and two more from 3 or &knuckles. It makes the most sense and it fits the ratio.  1-2-3 & 1=7+5 new stages= 12 zones.

Dear Lord I need that soundtrack inside of me. The Chemical Plant Act 2 remix is bloody amazing, Tee hits all the rights notes, it sounds just like a Streets of fucking Rage music, and believe, that's a HUGE compliment. *Hits plays again*

1. Animated trailers don't take that much budget.

2. When Aaron was talking about the classic delivery of action (aka the S3&K cutscenes), he talked about the opening with Knuckles punching Super Sonic. So, I doubt it.

Oh, also, most likely won't be a public demo for Mania. Aaron has said that as far as he knows SEGA have said no to it.

....I don't know if this is just me personally but I still generally think Water + Sonic = Bad. The only water level I really love is Hydrocity. I don't mind chemical plant as an adult because you can avoid most of the underwater parts, but it still kinda sucks whenever Sonic goes for a  dip in the  drink.

I could just be holding a grudge from Sonic 1 tho...

Hydrocity is only mostly good to me because it realizes water is a punishment a lot of the time and lets you avoid it if you know what you're doing tbh
Zelda probably has the higher ratio of good water levels overall.

Aquatic Ruin follows that exact same principle though.

That level is kinda iffy with it's obstacle placement so I don't enjoy it nearly as much.

Dude!! You call that torture we call Water Temples in Zelda a GOOD thing?!

I... I dunno... I always feel physically and emotionally crushed whenever I see them...

You're either insane or bloody brilliant to be able to go through them over the years and be able to say that with a straight face.

I will take Labyrinth Zone over anything water related in Zelda any day myself.

Dunno how we got to Tee Lopes symbolically sodomizing Jango but you do you

Aquatic Ruin is different from Hydrocity in that Hydrocity's water gimmicks involve plenty of hydroplaning, currents and waterslides to encourage speed and action; the slower bits are less prevalent, as opposed to Aquatic Ruin where water is exclusively a punishment.

Oh yeah I do concede Hydrocity is the faster and the more fun of the two, I'm just saying that they both follow the same basic principle; don't fuck up and you don't go in the water. It's better designed too with it's obvious Chemical Plant influence.
