The Job thread

What's your job? How's it treating you? Anything exciting happen lately? How does it promote or limit your hobbies? Post it here!

I work for a town in the American Midwest. I'm basically an intern, but I'm here for a long time and I work full time so it's effectively my job at this point. Basically, I make sure things get processed, communicated, put together, and so forth. It's great to have a job where I play a role in keeping the gears turning. Working for the public is a stark contrast to my introverted hobbies, but I still get a few hours a day to pop in a video game. I'm 22, fresh out of college, not bad.

I used to have a part time job working at a convinance store before I moved. I am currently trying to find a covinance store job here.

Currently work in an electronic retail store.

Pretty much anyone familiar with retail knows the typical things associated with retail.

Most of the managers are pretty chill (save for the store manager, but he's usually holed up in his office) but you constantly have to call on them, all the time, because of the most inane requests that customers make.

I'm mostly a cashier, so I'm not really out on the sales floor often, but if you're there long enough, you get to work in returns! *sarcastic horray*

Sometimes I get plenty of time off (part time), but the schedules are never consistent each week, not only are the shifts you work and days off you get are different, but the amount of hours for the week change as well (changing between 20-34 hours each week), and it gets worse when you go to school at the same time.

My current part-time job is at a big box retail store in my town. In the two years I've been there I stocked the shelves and cashiered with no opportunity for a full-time position outside of management. Before I could even stock the shelves in my department I have to fix the night shift's screw-ups (overstocking, defective products, items in wrong location, trash on shelves) which puts me behind in getting my department fully stocked before the store opens. I would not mind if it happened occasionally but it's been going on a consistent basis which really is wearing away at my patience. On top of that the pay is lousy and hours suck due to it being part-time so I've been applying for full-time positions outside the company.

The most recent full-time job I applied for is a position at an online retailer's fulfillment center and I am currently waiting for word on when the orientation for new hire's is as I've gone through the interview process last month. Hopefully once I get through training and start working there full-time I can finally make a living wage and move to an apartment closer to the job site.

I work full time as a computer workshop/ICT consultant in this town. I learn a lot, I am technically the only full-time employee, but since computers have become so ridiculously cheap, repairs is a dying breed, but the few customers we do have are happy and very loyal. The economical situation is horrible, and the future is looking grim (we are the only computer workshop left in the entire region as far as I know), but I won't go too far into that.

Since most of the time I work alone and things have a tendency to happen all at once, it can be pretty stressy, but all-in-all I am happy to be at service.

Right now I'm employed for school food service so I'm off work right now despite technically being on the job as a sub but I'm on the bottom of list for sub jobs so I've been taking summer off. It may not seem to be the most rewarding job out there, especially with how much I do make but it feels nice to do something nice for the community. And its really just there to help me gain both experience and endurance for jobs which is something I need.

I'm thinking about getting another job as a ultity clerk for a grocery story as well because I'm still flat broke and there's stuff that I want but we'll see. The only problems I have are references and the fact that I get into a math test are pretty big problems I have to overcome. If I don't get hired I guess it would be ok because I can look somewhere else but if I do then I should be in better financial standing.

About to go teach in China (which is fucking amazing and I'm stoked, visas are crazy though), and its pretty much the diametric opposite of what I'm doing right now, which is freelance editing work. Pays well, the only problem is that I have to force myself to leave the house - 'Time to eat! Oh wait, hyp3hat, you have not gone to the shops in days and you have no food, also it is 10:30PM because you lost track of time. You can starve?'

Big ups to my brothers and sisters in retail and the service industries, used to be my bread and butter and we don't get paid enough.

@Crow the BOOLET If you're saying you can't do maths and thus aren't sure you can work as a grocery clerk, it's absolutely not a problem - I am completely shite at maths (like, basic sums elude me, ie counting change) and I never ran into a problem with my tills or irate customers because of it. I worked in some ridiculously busy places as well and thought it would cost me my job, but nothing of the sort happened.

I have a part-time job at a pizza chain called Pie Five. Their format is somewhat unconventional, as they only serve personal-sized pizzas and you can add as many toppings as you like with no change in price. I really like their food, and the job is pretty easy overall - it mostly consists of putting toppings on pizzas and other tasks of that difficulty level. I still get a little stressed because it can be a bit fast-paced sometimes and they don't give you a lot of training, so it seems to be easier to make mistakes than it should be, but overall it's pretty good, and actually kinda enjoyable sometimes. There are a few little annoyances, though, such as the week's schedules always being sent out at the last possible moment. Also, I rarely leave exactly when I'm scheduled to, but I guess that's pretty normal for a restaurant job.

They used to give me an absolutely pitiful amount of hours, but they've fixed that recently, and plus I can sometimes snag more by covering others' shifts.

When school starts, I'll probably be able to get a work-study job, which I've heard are usually pretty cushy and pay more. I may be able to work both jobs, though, if they drastically reduce my hours at the pizza place.

BTW, I was actually thinking of making this thread myself so this is a bit weird xD

Currently unemployed, but I did do some work as an SNA and as a bus escort at a local special needs school early this year. It was only temporary, though.

I've been offered a free course in Cloud Computing due to the situation for finding jobs being abysmal since that short gig in the special needs school, and they will be increasing my social welfare payment while I do that. So I guess that will keep me busy for the year.

I was studying Computer Games Design before that, for two years, but the second year was less than ideal and so I've been looking for jobs and just working on personal projects to keep my skills in check. I find it really hard to focus on one thing these days, though.
