I'll probably wait for the game to go on sale so I can get it and the DLC all at once. Pretty cool that Winter Soldier is one of the DLC, I like him.

REALLY bizarre that the 2017 DLC consists of only two Capcom characters and four Marvel characters. Unless Ultron Sigma is unlockable and is placed on the Capcom side, the roster's going to look kinda lopsided.

Thought, how do we know that it's Marvel's Black Widow, there is a Capcom character or two with that name as well

It feels odd to have DLC announced this early. I thing Sigma was announced around June.

This game honestly looks rushed.

As great as the gameplay may be, the way it looks and the roster really hurt the game.

The closest thing i can think of is Street Fighter's Juri Han, but no dev has ever referred to her with that specific name, just occasionally as her undercover codename, Spider.

Slam Masters series actually has a character named black widow actually(and 4 marvel to 2 capcom would be odd. We could use a wild card as well)

Lord help me after being barely interested in this pre release I impulse bought this game this morning before work, and it's downloading right now. for real though, why didn't juri make this game?

I think the announcement of the female monster hunter pushed me over the edge, even if it's bullshit she's DLC :'( You know i'm gonna be back to post my "expert" opinion!!!!!!!!

also re: black widow, that would have been awesome, but I think capcom clarified that it's the marvel one on twitter.

Speaking of the Monster Hunter...

She's the first DLC trailer to hit! (Unsurprising, given MH's popularity.) She likes big weapons and fun fact: is voiced by Melissa Hutchison, AKA Clementine from Telltale's The Walking Dead and Merlina in Sonic & the Black Knight!

Monster Hunter will remember this.

Just finished viewing the story mode, i'll have my thoughts in spoiler:

Spoiler

I share my overall thoughts with partially what Maximilian said: it's far from great, but it could have been worse, and i've seen far worse crossover stories, so a 6.5-7/10. I'd say it's even better than the story mode of Tekken 7, because this one actually involves all the characters in the fucking roster.
The things that clearly don't work mainly are some awkward scenes and the pacing, and the entire first half suffer terribly because of this: we get stuff like the interaction with Rocket and Dante, or when Dante and Iron Man high-five horribly, and the speed is completely off, with so little character interaction, wich damages the overall products. Some characters like Haggar, Zero, Dormammu or Nova don't really get to do much in the whole story, and some interactions like Iron Man and Morrigan are completely absent. We also don't get to see a lot of how the Convergence happened, and a lot of questions about some obvious charcters being absent are raised (it's kind of handwaved with Cap saying a lot people died, so maybe that's the fate that happened to some characters; maybe a future update will fill in the gaps, a la Dissidia 012).
That being said, the story is also filled with great moments, and starts getting way better in its second half (coincidentally when the pace slows and we get much more character interactions), but even the first one has some legitimate nice scenes: for example, after seeing so many crossover where Morrigan is this saint full-Lawful Good, it's so refreshing to see a story that treats her as the dark succubus that she is, trying to seduce Ghost Rider's flaming absent penis and getting malicious when vaginablocked. Other highlights include Hulk and Ryu defending Valkanda and destroying the Dahren Moran, Iron Man and Spencer handwaving the stupid plot twist of the 2009 Bionic Commando game, the 1v1 duel between Dante and Jedah (with infinite Devil Trigger, fuck yeah), and of course, the entire finale culminating with X delivering the coup the grace with everyone's energy. I also think Ultron Omega is by far the best final boss in the series, even better than Galactus.
I didn't minded the graphics, sure they're not super next-gen and the cel shading of 3 was way better, but it was only noticeble in some close-ups.

I have good expectations for the future, considering there are still some unfinished plot points and some clear sequel baiting, so it's pretty obvious we're gonna get a season 2 DLC or update of some kind in the future, most likely involving the DLC characters. I'll wait and see.

Non-spoiler version: i liked it, but it has a lot of flaws. Still, in the end i can look at it in a positive, and i've seen far worse crossover stories anyway: this could have been much worse, especially with a relatively small roster like the one at launch.

This is one of the best fighting games I've played. Capcom knocked it out of the park in the game play department, there's a level of freedom and fluidity to it where MvC3 always felt too restrictive to me due to how OTGs were a luxury for half the cast and how assist-dependent the game play was. In contrast I'm just having a blast screwing around with the active tag mechanic, everyone being able to OTG and making up my own impractical combos but fun combos.

Shame that the terrible base roster, presentation and cheap PR has relegated the game to meme-status because there's a goldmine of quality behind the cracks.

Yeah mechanically this game is a HUGE improvement over 3. Streamlined without sacrificing much depth. I wish it had another year or so in the oven so it's kinks could be ironed out, roster expanded etc because these mechanics deserve to shine.

Therein lies the problem. A crossover fighter with a story is a case where you either go big or go home. Gameplay be damned. Especially since gameplay being tight and fun is seen as a given in fighters. But even the best of gameplay can only hold the audience interest for so long.

The problem is that other than that, there's so little new characters, a lot things that make this game feel needlessly smaller and weaker than its predecessors.

Why is there a smaller roster despite most being returning characters made out of reused assets? The art style while on a higher fidelity, does NOT really suit the characters as a whole and they tend to look rather ugly as a result.

I would like to see this gameplay retained somewhat (albeit modified to suit the old 3v3 as oppossed to 2v2) and put into a better game, because other than the gameplay, this latest installment doesn't really live up to the spirit of its family of fighters.

1.) Probably because this game was clearly made on a shoestring budget, and unlike when they made MVC2 they didn't have years of games to recycle characters from.

You can say that they could have grabbed more from MVC3 but it's not like they can just drag and drop the characters from there and get away with it. They would have to remake their models, not to mention redesign their gameplay to fit this games new systems (eg. "support" style characters need to function on point, specialist style characters that might rely on assists for filling gaps in their arsenal need to be rethought, gem abilities need to be taken into consideration.) You can see this from the changes made to MVC vets that came over from 3 like Haggar and Dorm

I'd love for there to be a bigger roster, but I understand why there isn't. If anything my main beef is just some of the weird as shit choices in the base roster (firebrand again?) and some dope fan favs being season pass DLC.

Paragraph 2.)  Define "better game". MVCi stomps all over MVC2 and MVC3 so far for me, and I think the new assist/tag switching mechanic is a brilliant combination of separate assists/tags and the gems giving you a universal ability regardless of your team allows a lot of really fun experimentation and outside of the box play, as emphasised by the dope as shit comeback, in week 1 finals yesterday.

Nitpick: Saying 3v3 is the spirit of the series is ignoring every game pre MVC2, this series has had more 2v2 fighters than 3v3 ones.

Honestly the standard edition is fine. I'd probably wait a bit and get it on sale unless you really, really wanna play it bad. I wouldn't buy the season pass unless you see it cheap somewhere or REALLY LOVE the characters in it.

Honestly, no matter how good the gameplay is, I can't get over the garbage-tier presentation. MvC3 cel-shading would've made the visuals far more bearable, but it also suffers from the same problem PS All-Stars did - lack of consistency in the character art, many characters look out of place with each other, especially X and Zero just looking out of place in the entire setup despite working just fine in the last game.

Seriously, this is one of the worst-presented fighting games in a long time, which makes the comparison to the labor of love that is Dragon Ball FighterZ look all the more stark - Capcom should've noticed that that game was sapping MvC:I's pre-release hype due to its incredible presentation and MvC:I being compared unfavourably. And I've seen the game's art direction as one of the game's major flaws in reviews, that should tell them something as well.

MvC:I needs a visual overhaul even more drastic than the one KOFXIV got, and replace a lot of the music. It wouldn't even need to change models, just change the friggn' shaders.

Well as a certain character,  one of many  got needlessly cut from the last game would object, I never claimed or even said that.

A good game speaks of the full package. Especially when it's a crossover fighter like this one. Good gameplay alone can't salvage that which was marred by terrible presentation.

And the point of a crossover like this is to actually properly mix things up with each installment.

And even the gameplay stomping it's predecessor completely is debatable.

When it comes to what actually has good gameplay on top of a well constructed roster and the content to boot, UMVC3 is definitely superior in actually getting a proper mix.

If MvC: I had both its great gameplay and everything else that fans recognize the predecessors for their flare,  then it'd be doubt better reception wise amongst the fans and commercially, let's not kid ourselves.

That worsens the deal too. This game's roster doesn't even hold a candle to Vanilla Marvel vs Capcom 3. In size or scope,  let alone content choice.

No matter how fun the gameplay is,  there's only so much,  most players who aren't attracted to much else outside it, can really play it without any other motivation,  like say,  proper arcade endings or a better done story mode.

Well what were you saying here then?

Sorry if I misunderstood your point as being (game needs to be reverted to 3v3 to preserve/live up to the spirit)

I guess where we are differing in opinion here is you keep talking about deals and packages whereas me personally, I don't tend to care about the extraneous content (story modes/bloated rosters/garbage single player modes) gamers tend to think a fighter needs before it's a complete package.

I don't even buy the whining that the roster is small. It's 6 less than MVC3, equal with MVC3 after the DLC characters come out, and unless it's a megabomba will probably surpass UMVC3 with post release support if they put half as much effort into it as they put into SFV. 30 isn't a small roster, although I'll concede not having X-Men like Mag and Wolverine is bullshit.

Anyway, re: content. My interaction with these games is generally Menu->Training Mode-> Online Mode or Menu ->2P Versus Mode, I generally value the actual fight mechanics and visuals above pretty much everything else. I've spent 849 hours playing SFV  another Capcom game notorious for not being complete because the gameplay is fun and satisfying. For me, the content is fighting against my friends and random people online. The best "content" in a fighting game is a solid fighting system and decent netcode, which is the portal to getting to play the solid fighting system.

Injustice 2 might have best in class single player content and really good face models but I'm never gonna play it for anywhere near as long as SFV or this, based on my early impressions because I hate the mechanics and animation of that game (that is, I hate the parts of the game I actually interact with). At the end of the day, I don't pick which fighter I want to play by which one has the most characters, because I tend to only play 1-2 anyway, or the most single player garbage, because I'm not interested, I pick the game that's fun, and that's where MVCI succeeds.

That's not to say MVCI is perfect- it's still garbage that Capcom don't seem to know how to make a tutorial that teaches fundamentals. The game really chose a weird as fuck action figure like graphic style that I personally don't like at all after the cool hard shading, comic book stylings of MVC3 and the PC version is buggy as shit, but at least it's fun!

What would bring this game into a proper mix, in your opinion? Is it just adding a few faces to the character select screen?  I really object to the suggestion that MVC3, a done to death game from 2011 is superior to this game in any way other than character count because I find it completely repulsive to play, and UMVC3 also has a completely busted online mode so I might be a little biased

Visually and art direction wise, the game looks like shit compared to previous entries, and feels rushed and like a victim of scummy business practices that have plagued fighting games forever. The character lineup is poor as well with many of the choices being based on the films on marvels side, and diversity is even less of a thing here, with BP being reserved as in disc DLC. I found 3 to be much more diverse and unique in terms of its selection.
