The General American Politics Thread

Maryland now the second state in history behind Maine to affirm same-sex marriage by popular vote.

Washington still left for marriage equality count.

And Minnesota is still counting the ballot on whether to formally ban same-sex marriage.

In the meantime, voting in Puerto Rico may decide its fate regarding its relationship with the U.S., one of the provisions possibly being statehood.

And now with Obama being projected to win Virginia, CNN is reporting that Romney called Obama telling him that he's conceding.

If some guy were to say "I'm voting for X because he's proposing free birth control," I would reply "Quit thinking with your dick"

Which wouldn't be any less sexist, as you're implying a number of supposedly inherent behaviours to a whole gender and assuming there isn't any rationale behind that statement beyond the instincts your prejudice presumes he has for being a male.

Romney is now speaking, and he has now officially conceded.

Lol it's like I posted on my fb.....anyone who thinks the country under Obama is anything near communism or socialism is purely uneducated about economics.

You should have seen Turbojet's epic essay on socialism earlier when Spiky reared his head.

Well, I was gonna take off, but now it seems like I'll be thought of as some sort of sexist pig if I leave now. What was sexist about my remark?

If some guy were to say "I'm voting for X because he's proposing free birth control," I would reply "Quit thinking with your dick"

Then maybe the problem is you're just saying blatantly stupid shit and trivializing any reasoning anybody could have for voting for an idea that you don't agree with (:

Pretty doubtful anything will come of that this time either.

I didn't deride any gender. If I said a man was thinking with his dick, how would that be sexist?

Really now?

women decided to vote with their vaginas instead of their brains

I even screencapped it incase you tried to edit.

And if you said that about a man, yes it would be sexist. But considering that men tend to dominate much of society, it's not as big an insult were it the other way around. Even more when men actually jokingly agree with thinking with their penises since "they can't help it". laugh.png

But on a serious note, when women dominate society and treat men poorly as a social class like they have the other way around, then you can easily play the misandry card. And this is coming from someone who supports the Men's Rights Movement.

Right, because neither one is inherently sexist. This is so exhausting....

Except I have never once in my life heard anyone claim a election result they didn't like was based on 'Those naive, unthinking males only voting with their penises and not their brains'

It is rather exasperating I agree

Trivia: genderbending a sexist statement in order to try to make it sound less sexist is already sexist. Which is delightful. But let's not go too deep into this. It will make me sound like a boring anthopologist.

You know what the worst thing is? Tomorrow I have to go to school and interact with those types of people walking around and feeling the smug emanating from them.

It would be nice if for once we had a go at remembering that we are the same species and didn't feel the need to bring gender into everything.

What I was trying to say was that social issues (in this case, birth control and abortion) took a front seat to the economy in many people's minds when it really shouldn't have.

You have still yet to explain how Romney and Ryan's economic plan was going to work better than Obama's.

Or race, or sexuality, or wealth, or... differences. :P

It would be nice if for once we could not slander a gender to begin with so that we didn't bring it into everything.

Edit: or race, or sexuality, or wealth, and etc.

Okay, I overgeneralized. I was on my way back from the Republican Headquarters with my tail between my legs and I didn't stop to think how my statement would come off. What I was trying to say was that social issues (in this case, birth control and abortion) took a front seat to the economy in many people's minds when it really shouldn't have.

Here's the thing, I'm am pretty much what anyone would consider pretty financially conservative for this country. I believe we should eliminate income tax for coorperations, end employer benefits (especially employers paying for healthcare....and I'm not a fan of universal healthcare either), lower the income tax for all brackets, cut a lot of social programs, etc....

and I'm still a huge supporter of Obama and was very happy he won this election, because as far as economic issues go neither candidate was really going to be able to do anything close to what I feel would be actually radical economic reforms, and yet Obama holds social values (which I hold to be very important similar to mine while also being fairly economically conservative (or "moderately conservative" by American standards)

Lastly if you had honestly showed understanding when people pointed out why they were mad at what you were saying it would have gone a long way in the beginning, though I hardly think anyone here is going to hate you over this. I just hope you don't go down the route of acting like it's your political views are why people are mad rather than some pretty blatantly insulting things you've said while expressing them.

I'm going to say this once and only once: you are not the one to determine the hierarchy of matters in people's minds.

EDIT: I was going to point out just how ironic it is for someone who, following the party he follows, claims to prioritize freedom over everything to try to set a specific and absolute order of importance of affairs for people in a country. But that would have been unnecessarily provocative.

God dammit. Now everyone hates me. Why did I ever post here that first time? I've only stuck around this long now to clear up the sexism so that when we're talking about an unrelated topic, there's not some sort of alien disconnect between you and the "sexist." But that isn't working either. Nepenthe, for example, we used to get along pretty well. I think I've lost a few e-pals tonight. That is way more painful than the election, and I honestly brought it upon myself. I'm done.

Know that I'm very hot by what you said right now, but I don't hate you. However, you come to into these political topics displaying very little knowledge of the issues and candidates, make very radical statements about Democrats, launching personal attacks, and never answering the call to elaborate on your positions when someone asks you to. And then when people get fed up with the thread-shitting, you decide to play the victim. Not everyone here is some indoctrinated liberal intolerant to the opposing opinions of others. Conservatives aren't shunned in this topic, and if nothing else it's conservatives who have made some of the most enlightening posts in this topic. It's just infuriating arguing with you on these kinds of discussions because of your behavior.
