Is it still possible for a recount to be called if Jones wins by less than 2%?

Sounds like it, yes.

It's expected Jones will clear the recount threshold, though, since the bulk of remaining precincts have a Democratic lean.

Let's hope Jones does good work. He may just be able to use his incumbency advantage to stay in office in 2020's election.

Here's hoping he manages to redeem liberal ideas in the eye of many Southerners.

I am shocked that a democrat won in Alabama. That is shocking beyond belief. Trump winning the presidency did not shock me at all, but this shocked me. I was getting calls/texts from NACCP of Alabama trying to get me to vote too even though I have not been there since last year, so they definitely did fought very hard. Good job Alabama. Now I wait for Trump to start saying that the election was rigged.

After this election, I don’t ever want to hear ANYONE spew that “my vote doesn’t matter” bullshit again. EVER.

Conservative media, reacting to Jones' upset win, doesn't seem to be ignoring the election, or back burnering it:

Next year's Democratic goals: The House, the Senate, Governorships and local elections.

The recruitment effort for the Democrats was already going incredibly well prior to tonight, with something like 2-3 times more new Democrats set to run (over 250 IIRC?) than Republicans, and that might've just been for Congress. Now? That recruitment drive is surely going to go through the roof. Democrats are going to think they can run and win almost anywhere, and with Trump in office, they might just.

The stage is set for a Blue Wave - now let's hope it actually materializes.

Taken surprisingly well.

Even if he does handwave it on the basis it will be up again in 2020. The seat will presumably be captured by a Republican running on Trump's coattails that year.

Of course, in 2020, there are several GOP seats in blue or purple states up for grabs. Alabama will no longer be a key race.

That, and if it does materialize, it sticks around.

I don't want to see a GOP rise ever again.

Trump did graciously concede the Iowa caucuses to Cruz in February last year, only to retroactively call them unfair and stolen days later. Just keep an eye on his account for the next few days.

Anywho, here's some Republicans attacking each other for Moore's projected loss.

I say projected because Moore has not conceded yet, and likely won't for a while.

Bull, that is nowhere near petty enough for that to be Trump. He handed his phone over while he was busy with more important matters.

The pendulum of power inexorably swings both ways. Eventually, the national public will just get sick of x party dominance, and vote for the other guys.

What this and future elections need to do is reshape the Republican Party into something worth voting for. After the 2012 election, Paul Ryan and some colleagues of his came up with a game plan to make the party more appealing to the growing Hispanic/Latino demographic, including embracing immigration reform. Trump threw that whole idea out the window with his regressive "I'll restore the good old days" crap, and Ryan & co cautiously went along with it, in exactly the opposite direction to the one they'd just been espousing. I hope that they'll soon come to regret taking that path, with a series of humbling defeats next year, in 2020 and beyond. Maybe then the party will come to accept immigration and other matters, and stop being such a monumental dick to everyone who isn't a wealthy white male.

I think we might see a permanent shift left from both Parties.

Trump pushed the Overton Window to the right, but it seems his opposition have worked to push it further left. The spectacular collapse of Obamacare repeal as well as the naked despicability of Trump have done their part to sap enthusiasm for far right politics from a lot of people who would quietly go along with them. The remarkable victory of socialists this November in red areas, and the liberal Jones' victory in deep red Alabama, mean Democrats have incentive to run on further left platforms.

It's going to be an interesting next few election cycles.

So what does this mean for the tax bill? And the net neutrality vote in a couple of days?

This week isn't over yet.

Possibly nothing.

Doug Jones cannot take his seat until the votes are certified, so he won't be in there until the start of 2018.

So count on McConnell to try and cram through what he can this week. After this Friday, the Senate adjourns until next year.

Wait, really? A lot of the media sites, including the Washington Post, have been saying they're expecting the tax bill to be filed on Firday and a final vote next week. I think "by December 22nd" was said at one point.

https://www.senate.gov/legislative/2017_schedule.htm

The Senate still has December 18th onward as a "state work period," which is code for going back home.

They can change the calendar if they want, but I assume most Senators will be eager to just go home for Christmas.

I hope this doesn't become a case of win the battle lost the war, and net neutrality gets gutted for pro-right corporations to prevent liberal media from getting anywhere.
