I feel like the good ending of Sonic 1 is what caused the two worlds to be merged. The other games happen on this merged world until Unleashed. Sonic 2 occurred because the seventh emerald was in the Human World, and Sonic accidentally sent a beacon to reclaim it. The games mostly happen in release order, although with some concessions, that Black Knight, Free Riders, and the 4 games happen before Unleashed, yet Mania happens after Unleashed. Eggman splitting the earth split the animal world away from it, which is why Angel Island isn’t there, and which ended GUN. Eggman was stranded on the animal world at the end of the game, and this is why he abandoned the Robotnik name. The Chaos Emeralds were also jettisoned to Earth after Generations, which is why Forces totally lacked them. “Mobius” is the name of the combined state of both worlds. DoDonpa’s true goal was to try and seal the barrier between worlds for good, to prevent any of the monstrosities on earth from coming back.
