Pokémon Sword & Shield (Coming November 15th, 2019)

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking that they'll be "normal" Pokemon games, with a Go app (not sure if new or old) to connect with on your phone or tablet. The Go functionality will be optional, but will be the primary means of locating ultra-rare Pokemon (Celebi, Mew etc) during seasonal or promotional events. These rare creatures will also make their way into the Switch game - in fact, anything you catch in the app will be transferable, and vice versa. They may even sync up so anything you catch will automatically register at the moment of capture to your Pokemon game account. Utilizing both the app and Switch game will be encouraged, so expect rare items and all sorts of other goodies to appear only in one version.

Ew, if that leaked image is legit, I expect much more from the Switch.

Anyway, I wonder if you get to play as Blue/Green in "Eevee version".

Spoiler

According to the leaks you play as a new character, but Red and Blue are part of the story.

What does it mean by "catching Pokemon works like in Go?" If I have to walk around to catch Pokemon, that's an instant no buy from me.

Spoiler

I don't think they would do that.  If this is a Switch title, then it'd need to be fully playable in docked mode as well.*

I'm guessing it means that you do a little action in order to throw a Pokeball like in Go.

*there are games that were only playable in handheld mode before I think like Voez maybe? (they patched dock mode play in I think?) but I don't think Nintendo would like it much if Gamefreak completely forgoes the Switch's main gimmick

I can't wait until people find out that you can't evolve Pikachu or Eevee in these games

Half the point of Pokemon is evolving them. Remove evolutions and you don't even have a Pokemon game. You barely even have a game.

No, it has to be a proper mainline game, evolutions and all, with a companion app you can transfer Pokemon, exclusive rarities etc to and from freely. If the app lacks evolutions, then it will be a disappointment, because taking your game's Pokemon out with you into the world and doing all your regular shizz with them would be wonderful, but the main game can't lack them. It can't.

Yeah, It's actually pretty logically because those type of special Pokemon have mild story & gameplay importance unlike normal interchangeable Pokemon. Also to compare it, most people don't get upset when legendary Pokemon don't evolve... So I can't see a special starter Pokemon that doesn't being a huge deal breaker.

Yeah I wouldn't like it but it wouldn't be entirely unexpected. Picking Eevee over Pikachu has a major advantage in the form of its multiple evolutions. I can see preventing evolution of either starter to curb that advantage as well as market their base forms' cuteness even more.

in which case I would just switch out my starter as soon as possible with something else.

Yellow set a precedent for that and it's likely that game was a major influence on...whatever this is, and GF is certainly no stranger to weird decisions, so I could see it. I'm not sure what to expect really.

Maybe at worst you just won't be able to evolve them quickly? Stones are easy to keep out of the player's reach until later, and they could just change Umbreon, Espeon, and Sylveon's evolution methods if they really want to.

A strange thought I had... What if they did something crazy like Introducing temporal evolution? Basically same deal as Mega evolution... except maybe just something for Pikachu and Eevee when they can evolve in battle but reset afterwards? Would solve multiple problems at once IMO.

I guess I'd be...okay with that, but uh. I already didn't like Megas much in part because there's a few I would have greatly preferred as a permanent new form.

I guess it depends on who one asks. Personally I enjoyed Megas for what they were. I didn't feel a need for those forms to be permanent.

I'd be pissed if I started with an Eevee and couldn't get it to become a Leafeon.

At least Pikachu gets the Light Ball, so unless Eevee gets something to make it a viable partner when not evolved, it'd be dumb to prevent the original player from evolving it to their preferred form. I give Yellow Version a pass as it was loosely based on the anime and that Pikachu is based on Ash's Pikachu, and Pikachu even in Gen I isn't a particularly bad Pokémon. I couldn't see this repeated, though.

You'll get the Z move and you'll like it.

On a serious note, how would that even work in a Yellow reimagining? Eevee breaks time to summon the power of all its forms?

In all seriousness, though, because this is apparently a sequel title and your character isn't based on Ash from the anime (or the manga?  I think I heard that was in there too), there's really no reason why they couldn't let your Pikachu evolve, and therefore let your Eevee evolve too.  ...Well, I say that, but if the alleged leaked screenshot is the real thing, your partner Pokemon is going to be a following Pokemon and it'll jump on your head while you're Surfing, and that sort of animation may be considerably less viable for an evolution.  So basically, one bad reason would be replaced with another bad reason.  (They could easily work around that, of course, if they're willing to put in the modelling work for the starter evolutions.  But will they?)

But let's take seriously, for a moment, the idea that they do let both starters evolve.  (Crazy days, where you have to buy a different game to get a different starter.  What is this, Fire Emblem Fates?)  It's true that Eevee's multiple evolutions make it a much more flexible starter, in a way which is perhaps almost but not quite mitigated depending on how long they keep you from evolving it, and if they lock you into the Gen I Eeveelutions either temporarily or permanently.  How could they balance that?  Design each Eeveelution's stats and moveset to be highly specialised, while making Raichu a really strong generalist with wide type coverage in its moveset and TM access?  Conversely, if they don't let either starter evolve, they'd have to apply the latter strategy to both.  Seems a little less interesting.  That structure of "build your own Raichu versus choose your favourite Eeveelution" seems like something they could use as a selling point to differentiate between versions.

Then hopefully Eevee gets a decent move set & stat boost, because it always felt useless to me. Never cared for it.

Also, Eevee is the evolution Pokemon. It has no point if it can't evolve.

I'd love some more items and boosts for the pre-evolved Pokemon, stuff like the Eviolite is too rare. Also remember when Pikachu was promoted to starter in Yellow it got it's move set practically doubled to compensate for being unable to evolve.

I always have a Meowth on my team every gen, it's fun trying to use more elaborate ways to pick up the slack with a Pokemon over just level up spamming and evolving, but I feel like the games could offer more in this regard without taking too much of the challenge out of it (I'd love if they gave Magikarp ONE Water type move for example, but make it really obscure or high level to get it).

Exactly though. Making an Eevee that won't evolve would be a twist on it's usual growth. Eevium Z already plays on this since it's an ability exclusive to it, not to mention a few anime episodes that showcase Eevees that are fine not evolving. Since it always changes element types from evolving, this allows Eevee to be even more its own thing.

Just give Eevee some of the same perks Pikachu has and it can work.
