Another brief video - this time with James Turner on the game's interpretation of the UK:

Blimey, the draw distance is shamefully bad! Look at the people fade into existence at 0:45, and the Wooloo a few seconds later. The game isn't at all impressive graphically and really does look like a glorified 3DS game. It's pleasant to look at most of the time, so don't get me wrong. But the graphical fidelity is low, and a game that looks as outdated as this shouldn't have such low draw distance. Textures are muddy from the screenshots we've seen too. It's all seeming pretty bad, isn't it? Any word on the resolution and framerate of the games? I'm honestly expecting 720p and 30fps...

Music's nice though. Yay?

Is it time for the first evolutions of the starters?

EDIT: Today's video from GI includes a look at the brick city (which is said to take inspiration from Manchester specifically) in Maya, in between exploring Game Freak's offices:

I've enjoyed how little if these games they've shown off so far. But with only a month to go, yeah, they probably will be showing off the starter evolutions very soon. That means I'll have to be backing off from all news! I managed to avoid everything about SuMo a few years ago, but that was back when I used a PC for most of my internet time and could install blockers to avoid spoilers. Now that I mainly just use my phone, it'll be much more difficult.

My guess is that the event in question is Nintendo Live 2019.

The Sun/Moon promotional cycle was hype while it was ongoing, but it really damaged my experience of the game.  They spoiled basically everything.  I'm really glad GameFreak's being so sparing with Sword/Shield.

Hey guys do you like Gen 1 focus? No? Well that's to bad because we're getting four more in the form of Gigantimax forms!

I wonder if that's literally all the news that there'll be to see today? Gigantamaxing is just Mega Evolutions to me, although without the apparent pre-requisit that a Pokémon is fully evolved. I'm not really a fan of any of the Gigantamax forms we've seen yet. They're all so gimmicky. It's no surprise that Charizard gets one of all Pokémon, after he got two Megas and  is the Galar Champion's signature Pokémon.

No really, why  does Leon have a Charizard? It's a cool Pokémon for sure, but it's so boring to see it constantly hammered in everywhere. The Champion of a new region should have a new Pokémon just as a matter of variety and intrigue. It was fine with Diantha because she used an all-new team apart from Gardevoir; but Gardevori was newly a fairy type in that gen and was only used in its new Mega form. Plus when Wally returned as a rival in ORAS, they changed his Gardevoir for a (Mega) Gallade. There's no excitement in seeing Charizard as a new Champion's signature 'mon, not even when it gains a Gigantamax (/third Mega Evolution). It reeks of pandering. Yawn

It's starting to look like the Gen 1's are going to once again outweigh everything else. We got Galarian Zigzagoon and Obstagoon, but all of the other regional variants and Gigantamax forms of old 'mon are Gen 1 so far. That's really weak.

Fat Pikachu and Long Meowth from the Affleck leak are finally confirmed then. Charizard seemed like a foregone conclusion with it being the champion's ace, so really only Eevee is remotely surprising.

They're funny and all, but Gigantamax doesn't really interest me that much.

EDIT: And here they are... plus one more:

Pikachu is available if you have a save with Let's Go Pikachu

Eevee is available if you have a save with Let's Go Eevee

Meowth is available for everyone until 15th January

Gigantamaxing Meowth is available to download until mid-Januaray. Pikachu and Eevee are only available if you have save data from the respective Let's Go games. Doesn't bother me personally cause I'm not interested in any of then, but this is the same old shit that Pokémon has gotten away with for years that other games get lambasted for. This is a shitty practice that's very unfriendly towards the consumer.

Also everything looks as dumb as I thought. Butterfree looks okay, I guess.

I really, really wish they'd stop with gimmicky and absurd Pokémon to instead focus on a more rounded cast like they used to. It started around Gen 6, I think? Pokémon from Gens 1 - 5 were typically more levelled (in as much as Pokémon can be). Newer ones, including forms and variants, seem more like they're designed to be individual characters rather than species. Meowth, Eevee, Weezing, Obstagoon and Butterfree in this generation all fall into that category. Pikachu is kind of a clever throwback, but alongside the rest it feels just as gimmicky. Only Ponyta and Sirfetch'd manage to escape it.

It doesn't apply to all, but there's an ever increasing amount of gimmicky 'mon introduced in each generation. Megas seem tame compared to the awful Gigantamax Pokemon we've seen so far. And just for the record, I dislike most Megas and the concept in general...

New Gigantmax Forms

pokemon_gpikachu_2x.png10_16_gpikachu_2.jpg

  • Gigantmax Pikachu
  • Type: Electric
  • Ability: Static
  • Height: 68'11"+
  • Weight: ????.? lbs.
Quote

All the electricity it generates in the sacs in its cheeks is stored in its tail. In battle, it will strike opponents with its tail and send a jolt of electricity through them as great as any lightning strike!

It’s become so powerful that now it can produce enough electricity to rival a power plant! However, using this electricity to help power people’s homes seems difficult, as Pikachu can only remain Gigantamaxed for a short time.

If you have play records from Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! on your Nintendo Switch system, you’ll be able to receive a special Pikachu that can Gigantamax in Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield.

10_16_gpikachu_5.jpg

Quote

Electric-type moves used by Gigantamax Pikachu will change to G-Max Volt Crash. G-Max Volt Crash not only deals damage but also paralyzes all opponents!

pokemon_geevee_2x.png10_16_geevee_2.jpg

  • Gigantmax Eevee
  • Type: Normal
  • Ability: Run Away / Adaptability
  • Height: 59'1"+
  • Weight: ????.? lbs.
Quote

The fur around its neck has become extra fluffy and luxurious thanks to Gigantamax power. Any opponent caught in this fur becomes enamored with Eevee and loses the will to fight.

Gigantamaxing has caused Eevee to become more rambunctious than ever, and it will attempt to play with any opponent. However, it often ends up crushing its opponent due to its massive size.

If you have play records from Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! on your Nintendo Switch system, you’ll be able to receive a special Eevee that can Gigantamax in Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield.

10_16_geevee_5.jpg

Quote

Normal-type attacks used by Gigantamax Eevee will change to G-Max Cuddle. G-Max Cuddle doesn’t only deal damage when it hits—any opponent that is the opposite gender of Eevee will become infatuated!

pokemon_gcharizard_2x.png10_16_gcharizard_1.jpg

  • Gigantmax Charizard
  • Type: Fire/Flying
  • Ability: Blaze
  • Height: 91'10"+
  • Weight: ????.? lbs.
Quote

The flames inside its body have become stronger, and now fire erupts from its mouth and horns in addition to its tail. It seems that the strength of the flames increases when Charizard roars.

Charizard’s flames have become enhanced with Gigantamax power and now form wings on its back. These wings are hotter than magma, and Charizard can fire them off to scorch its opponents!

10_16_gcharizard_5.jpg

Quote

Fire-type attacks used by Gigantamax Charizard will change to G-Max Wildfire. G-Max Wildfire doesn’t just deal damage to an opponent when it hits—it will also continue to deal damage for four turns to any Pokémon that isn’t Fire type!

pokemon_gbutterfree_2x.png

10_16_gbutterfree_2.jpg

  • Gigantmax Butterfree
  • Type: Bug/Flying
  • Ability: Compound Eyes
  • Height: 55'9"+
  • Weight: ????.? lbs.
Quote

Its most notable feature is its blinding wings, which have grown to gigantic proportions. The light of its wings comes from their scales, which can inflict paralysis, poisoning, or sleep on its opponents. These scales are Butterfree’s most effective weapons!

Butterfree’s vast wings can stir up a wind strong enough to lift a 10-ton truck, just by flapping. This wind also scatters poisonous scales around the area, so simply being near this Pokémon is very dangerous.

10_16_gbutterfree_5.jpg

Quote

Bug-type attacks used by Gigantamax Butterfree will change to G-Max Befuddle. G-Max Befuddle doesn’t only deal damage—it will also scatter scales around opponents and cause them to become poisoned, become paralyzed, or fall asleep!

pokemon_gmeowth_2x.png10_16_gmeowth_2.jpg

  • Gigantmax Meowth
  • Type: Normal
  • Ability: Pickup/Technician
  • Height: 108'3"+
  • Weight: ????.? lbs.
Quote

Gigantamaxing has caused Meowth’s body to stretch to astounding lengths, and the coin on its head has also become massive. The giant coin can emit a torrent of Gigantamax power, filling the surrounding area with a powerful golden gleam.

Meowth loves shiny objects, and when it sees skyscrapers lined with glass, it won’t be able to resist the urge to sharpen its claws on them. This behavior can cause considerable damage, such as wearing down the exterior walls and breaking windows.

This special Meowth that can Gigantamax can be received as an early-purchase bonus for Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield by selecting the Get via Internet option in Mystery Gift from Friday, November 15, 2019, to Wednesday, January 15, 2020.

10_16_gmeowth_5.jpg

Quote

Normal-type attacks used by Gigantamax Meowth will change to G-Max Gold Rush. G-Max Gold Rush deals damage to opponents, of course, but that’s not all! It will also scatter coins all over the area, giving you a considerable in-game cash bonus after the battle!

G-Max Gold Rush will also confuse your opponents!

The new Gigantamax Pokemon look pretty cool. I extra like the Gigantamax Charizard design... tho I wish it was just a normal alternate evolution and not locked behind a one game gimmick which they probably will discard in the future.

These gimmicks are popular with children apparently and ever since XY, the series has gained more international appeal.

I get catering to the target demographic, but yea. Call me a cynical old man, but things were so much simpler in older generations. Changes were more subtle and less in your face.

I think that Go is to "blame" for the series resurgence in popularity in the worst ways; continued nostalgia pandering post Gen-6, simpler mechanics and changes/additions designed to get a viral sort of reaction instead of ones that are more meaningful. XY, SuMo and now SwSh feel like they're full of hooks. The team said "what can we do to sell more copies and get everyone's attention?" when it came to developing the games, instead of "what can we do to make these games better and different?".

I'm still really looking forward to SwSh for God knows what reason; I found XY to be dull and can't stand SuMo on a number of levels. I don't know why I'm stilli nterested in these games. Morbid curiosity? Misplaced hope and refusal to give up on a series I used to love? I just want to get some enjoyment out of these games. They don't have to be perfect, just enough for me to get into with solid gameplay and enough Pokémon that I like to make more than one full party of new mons.

I actually typically like more flamboyant designs myself as I tend to dislike normal dull things in all aspects of life. I loved a number of the Ultra Beasts from sun & moon games, and I like at least some of the new Gigantamax Pokemon here, especially the Charizard… My problem is because these things are made to be mostly 1 game gimmicks that it makes them feel kinda pointless and hard to care about in the long run.

I know saying this on a Sonic fourm reeks of irony but BW2 came out seven years ago, if I didn't enjoy any of the games since then, hate their focus, gimmicks, changes, regions etc etc I'd just stop and play something else, but I'm not gonna tell people how to spend their money.  I don't dislike the series obviously, Loved ORAS, and SM is one of my favorites. I like Mega Evolution, thought Z Moves were alright and more accepting to Dynamaxing than most

But after LGPE and now this I really can't even look at Gen 1 anymore, this has gone way to far. I just wanna see new Pokemon

I liked SuMo Well enough, but mostly because the writing was stronger there than it usually is for this series, which I very much appreciate.

Gameplay wise.....eehhh, 50/50. I don't dislike the direction the series has gone, but its certainly more....commercialized.

Saying they care more about getting people's attention to sell more units than focusing on improving the game feels accurate. I'm mostly interested in ShSw for the potential QoL changes that will hopefully come, but can't say I care much for these gimmicks.
