IDW's Sonic the Hedgehog

Recommended Posts

I don't see why it's such a big deal to have such a big cast characters made for world building and such.

It worked for Post reboot Archie didn't it? Honestly, why can't it work for IDW?

And, I'm getting really annoyed with SEGA at this point, their character handling is a mess.

I get and understand that Sonic is their property and deserve a say in a completely different publisher using their main licensed characters but why bother getting stingy about characters they don't even use anymore, they couldn't care about the FF, scrapped game cast, etc getting in because they have no plans for them appearing in the main series.

Now, I know this same argument can be applied to characters from Underground, X, etc but frankly nobody would give a shit if someone like Chris or Sonia were ditched for good.

You'd wonder why Ian fought for Aosth and Satam elements in the first place.

Although, it is kinda confusing why OVA wasn't fought for since it's pretty popular by a majority and if I'm honest, I have seen many here fond of Fleetway.

Why do so many people think a rebooted comic will just be like the recent games? That's an insult to the writers if I ever saw one. Just look at MegaDrive. Sega aren't really THAT strict that they'll just ask IDW to make comics about the new games. Original adventures are more than welcome and that's what they got the license for. And I'm pretty sure whoever they pick for writers will do a far better job than Pontaff.

I thought the makers of the OVA claimed sole rights to original elements, from the setting and characters down to Knuckles' stupid hat.

(I love the hat, but it's about as stupid a hill to die on as "Sonic in a leather jacket" and "Robotnik, but not.")

If I remember right, Archie got in some real trouble just for a brief homage back in issue 101, and that was when SEGA was much more hands-off.

I love the OVA, but with that kind of history behind it, I wouldn't fight for it, either.

As for Fleetway, that's another kettle of fish that I'll let someone else talk about, but the long and the short of it is that-- to my understanding-- it's all creator-owned legitimately, unlike how others have laid such claims.

There will likely be one or two.

But why would we need more than that when so many characters already exist?

Because unlike you claim the characters don't actually have defined jobs. And the ones that do besides tails get those jobs ignored, like sega constantly forgetting that knuckles had a job. Shadow... over and over and over again.

Personalities? Yes

Character progression for those who apply? Yes

Jobs? That's nebulous. Its kinda whatever they feel like, for better or for worse.

And there are only so many characters they can't fill out everything. Lets say forces doesn't ruin shadow's character progression and Gun and Team dark is still a thing, ok gun has to have... people in it... doing things. They don't have to be important, but they have to exist. Then you have , if it is a world, people living in places with different jobs, and things of that nature. These characters don't have to be the " main characters" because trust me, one of my MAIN complaints abuot the archie book was that I don't think the freedom fighters should have stayed around. But you need these people to build a world, to create stories around. In this medium, its kinda necessary, concepts need to be introduced, places need to be introduced these things usually comes with new characters in a lot of writing so your protagonist in that story doesn't magically know about everything, person or place in the world. It makes the world fill larger.

That said, this comic book could literally just be Saturday adventures and nothing I just said matters.

I believe the concern is there because with recent games we got

  • Classic pandering since Colors
  • Everyone who's not Sonic doing nothing but worship the ground he walks on instead of being dependent individuals who are just of capable of kicking ass
  • Eggman has been a joke villain (prior to Forces but with Pontaff writing ) so much Team Rocket comes off as more threatening in comparison

I can't speak for anyone else but myself but I stopped playing the games since Generations because I found the games so dull and empty and the Archie comics (including the reboot) offered so much what got me into Sonic in the first place, and it wouldn't surprise me if SEGA included the aforementioned in their mandate to gain approval from people who think Sonic should be at the same level of Dora the Explorer.

I thought the OVA was due to conflicts in licencing between the American and Japanese branches of Sega.

Where.

And no having appropriately Sonic-asthetics doesn't count

Don't you know the fact that we keep getting mostly 2D in every game since Colors is to please the reviewers who don't like modern sonic and only like the 2D classic titles *rolls eyes*

This was confirmed as being a thing two weeks ago with the leaking of the Rise of Lyric design doc.

I believe that currently Tails and Eggman are considered inventors and that there can be nobody else in Sonic be they main or minor character who also has that job now.

SEGA-Sense 3

"You can't have anyone but Tails and Eggman as inventors in any Sonic media because... Screw what you want, it's what WE say. We need no reason."

Oh yeah this reminds me. Did SEGA forget Wave the Swallow when they basically said that? Or does she not count as a inventor?

Two possibilities there;

1. Wave is a specialist, as she only really deals with engineering Extreme Gear.

2. It was speaking in the context of Sonic Boom, as neither she or any other such figure is present there. It would apply to other new media as well, but she'd be included in the inventor batch if she was there.

Are you really trying to snark at "no-one can make exceptions in handling our property without checking with us"? Sonic isn't Public Domain, man.

It's just amusing how freely SEGA does whatever makes them rise while everybody else essentially prays they can do the same as their partners.

Not worth being a partner if you lack 70-80% of the freedom those who primarily control the franchise express on a much worse willy-nilly level using concepts just as bad if not several times worse than partners attempt.

... they are licensing the property, not selling co-ownership. If anything, Sega is an exception in what you're complaining, since unlike any smart company, they didn't pay attention to how their partners were treating the property, giving us Penders and friends. You really think, say, Netherrealms didn't have to check on everything they were doing with DC first? Capcom with Marvel? Marvel with Alf? IDW with Hasbro? So on and so forth?

It's a matter of reworking how tightly they keep a clench on the franchise. Too much leniency can cause problems, yet being too firm can be just as bad, if not worse. In the former manner, folks can use AND abuse creative freedoms creating questionable content via questionable people, while the later causes a lack of creativity and generic/dull experiences that are often repetitive at best.

Its all well and good to have rules/regulations in our present day, but just as with the tone of the franchise, SEGA is too quick to take things in the opposite direction too strongly.

That's a lot different from literally snarking that they control it at all.

Oh trust me, there's much more detail behind my thoughts in general. I usually just post them bluntly and keep things rolling in whatever directions things go. I'm more than happy to explain things, though often when I do it just frustrates, so I keep it short and blunt by and large.

Though here and there I'm long and blunt too, just depends on how much detail I feel like putting into stuff, if it's worth it or not.

Got a reply from Steve Scott:

Hello!

Not overbearing whatsoever, so no need to apologize.

And thanks for reaching out, we're very excited to take on such an important title and treat both Sonic, and his fans, with respect.

I can't reveal anything more than what's been announced at this time, but just wanted to reassure you that we're working closely with SEGA to make IDW's Sonic comics the best they can be, and we're taking fan input on board in regards to any decision making.

Thanks!

They've been on a never ending quest to get back to Sonic's "roots". I just want to see things move forward and I'm tired of constant reminders of "The genesis era was so cool you guys!"
