IDW's Sonic the Hedgehog

O boy. Just say already what is canon. And what's not. Sonic is as complicated in it's lore as a series just as mush as Kingdom Hearts with its.

...I feel like we're going in circles.

Short version: Sonic is two timelines now: Classic and Modern. Modern apparently splits into Human World and Animal World. Details are highly vague.

No one ever made official list which games are cannon, which aren't (exception: Chronicles isn't), so make up your own mind. As you see we all are different ideas.

Yeah if you ignore him getting pissed about Eggman sucking the energy from The Wisps or that moment of silence after Amy's transmition cuts off in Lost World or the speech he gives about how they need to work together to put the world back together in in Forces.

Both of those instances can be described as “taken aback” and left solemn. I want to see even more emotions. Like in the Forces trailer. Both of those sub-plots were also dropped with little resolution. It is never acknowledged how Eggman sucessfully manipulated the world’s life source into his hands, instead, the battle against him plays polka music (with occasional hits of tragedy throughout the instrumentation, which I really liked).

4. Rivals 1 is the first canon encounter between Sonic and Silver, but I doubt Rivals 2 is canon

Any particular reason why?

The few mandates that I don't really agree with are the ones about the game characters not having character development and Cream not being allowed to help with fights. Granted, the later issues seemed to have help reverse these with the Shattered arc and the Gemerl arc respectively.

There was a Gemerl arc?

You're right, Sonic's moment in Lost World was one of the darkest despite the game's light tone.

I believe Sonic Lost World was trying to unite the Classic-era setup(Sonic stopping Eggman's latest abuse of nature with Tails by his side) and the more quippy/snarky dialogue with significant darker story elements and implications; the Deadly Six in particular were created with that tonal effect in mind, even if it's only really represented in two of them.

Not to say that Colors didn't try that at all, it just didn't really put much focus/emphasis on it.

Polka? Clearly, somebody hasn't experienced many JRPGs.

If we tell you a third time, will you just ignore it a third time to complain a third time that this cartoon hedgehog's status quo is too complicated and ask a fourth time for someone to explain to you a fourth time how it works so you can ignore it a fourth time and complain a fourth time and ask for a fifth time?

In truth, the only real canon is the old manga with Nikki Parlouzer. I think we've finally settled this.

The issue with the last two things you said is , everyone ignores that in lost world because lost world didn't make you care that happened. Just because you insert something in a story doesn't mean its emotional. You know how much shit I watch where they try to insert some implication of death and it means nothing. That moment meant nothing, and sonic was still a zombie in that game. Same for forces too, that speach was forced and nothing because the entire plot of the game meant nothing and could have been solved several times over if characters hadn't removed from the plot ( shadow ) or intentionally nerfed to push the CaC ( tails and silver ) . Just because sonic made a speech doesn't make him emotional, it doesn't make that speech mean anything, it was just as pointless and nothing as the rest of the game.

That's why people ignore, they didn't " ignore" they don't remember because it means nothing. Its window dressing to cover off the fact that up untill that point they hadn't given you anything to care about and those games respective stories meant nothing

I was referring to when Cream was escorting the Gate Keys.

Oh yeah, Panic in the Sky. That was a nice arc.

Even though Silver goes head to head with Infinite for quite a bit.

Yeah he does, like a dumb goat

Not someone with the powers of telekensis! He could just grab infinite, and infinite couldn't so anything about it. Infinite entire power works on his ability to hit you, silver literally has a power to avoid that entirely. That is not used

Along with that making him look extra weak, because infinite didn't get stronger... he didn't gain strength with the ruby, he just got illusion powers. I'm not saying infinite wasn't a tough costumer before , and to be fair silver also got bodied by shadow. That said silver is a tough time traveler from the future , he should be able to hand a washed ass merc with a glowy pimple on his chest fairly easy with his telekenisis he never uses on the guy

That we see. He had been engaging him throughout a portion of Luminous Forest, which took at least a minute and a half if you wanna be literal.

So for all we know, he did try, fail, and just decided to do things more directly.

You gotta show me that. Unless you show me whats going in the plot, or there's a clear implication of that happening. It just seems like silver forgot how to use his powers

That's true... although it would be muuuuch cooler if it was an illusion and you never actually saw infinite the whole plot. But we can talk about how to fix forces all day

Far be it from me to defend Forces, but it seems Infinite's powers would be as effective on Silver as on anyone else.  Being grabbed by telekinesis wouldn't stop Infinite from generating illusions which could attack Silver in his place, and for that matter, he probably wouldn't be grabbed by telekinesis anyway as he'd be hiding himself and using an illusory doppelganger to fence with Silver.

So somebody asked about the mandates about Sonic's character growth, and David responded with this.

There's hope for SEGA after all.

Hopefully they don't mess it up.

Growth is good, freedom from restriction caused by bad archie writers even better. Hopefully new writers don't make similar mistakes where they think they are being cool and fuck up a character. Penders was uh, one to do that often.

Amy, tails, Knuckles, Rouge and Shadow high on the " Hopefully they don't mess that up "

Ian's characterizations of them in the Preboot were good, so I doubt he could screw it up.

Ian's characterizations were pretty good, some weren't the best but generally i trust him.

But, he's probably not going to the be the only one writing that book, and maybe at some point, he wont. People move on sometimes and sometimes other people write books. And maybe there might be other books like universe that other people write down the line

I'm not taking Ian's writing and Ian writing for granted
