IDW's Sonic the Hedgehog

I think there's a slight difference, though; the Bride of Conquering Storm (the original incarnation) was at least a named character from the get-go and had an important position in a story, even if she only served to end Lightning Lynx's sub-plot in the Iron Dominion arc. Lanolin wasn't, and was just there as one of many characters who were feeding exposition from the village, hence why they were all described as just villagers in the script.. However, she's got a way more elaborate design than her fellow background characters, which is probably why people are getting confused on her status (as shown by Flynn's Twitter).

Remember Derpy from My Little Pony : at first she was a background character with an animation error, then BOOM.

Anything can happen if a character, main or just decorative, gets enough attention.

I figured it was just a case of people really liking a specific background character a lot more than the comic team expected.

Kinda like how Conquering Storm grew onto folks when she initially wasn’t that major a character.

I'm 67& sure Stormie was always meant to be something.

Better example would probably be Echo the Dolphin from Meropis. I think I remember Flynn saying she isn't important at all (just a reference to Genesis game) but 2 years later he apparently decided "eh, people were asking, why not" since he needed someone for Chaotix SU.

She's a background character, she wasn't even scripted to be anything, it's doubtful we'll ever see her again.

I think that's my one issue in terms of that design'; she sticks out like a sore thumb compared to the rest of the background characters and there's ultimately no reason why that is. The rest follow the Forces template but have ABT's flair so they're still clearly his, but Lanolin is pretty much designed like a recurring character despite that not being the case.

There can always be background gags. Background character or not, deft drawing can always be used to fill in details and leave behind little jokes. 5 issues from now we could see a newspaper scattered to the winds that contains a small advertisment for a saloon. That's all it would take. It's subtle world building to boot.

I don't doubt that she was ever supposed to be more than a background character, but that also doesn't mean they cant be utilized to tell their own little stories to make the world feel more alive.

I also get where to your coming from with her design. While I wouldn't call her "overdesined" per say, she does appear way to polished for a background character. If I had to hazard a guess, ABT put some extra work into her, as she was to appear on one of the variant covers, but the upscale in quality makes her stand out a bit in comparison to the others who don't serve as big a marketing presence.

I agree with that. Some of the background characters (like that white dog with blue dot on her forehead) had a reccurring-level design. They're too detailed compared with the other randomly generated looking ones.

I wonder if some of the background characters are the actually artist's personal OCs. That would explain. Or they're planned to be recurring in the future.

Or they can be recurring if Sonic comes back to this village later.

That's a pretty neat design.

Although I wonder whether ABT was inspired by the US Acres cartoon a little. There is a character of the same name there and she's a sheep

Lanolin is an actual substance in sheep wool, so it's possible that it's a coincidence, but who knows, lol.

Just finished Issue 2. Might go more in depth with thoughts later, but it was average, I guess. The story is still really driven by a boring formula and there's still issues with the townspeople, but there's more interesting things brought up in this issue, at least. Amy having undergone decent amounts of character development was actually pretty great. While I find Archie Amy as a good version of her not overly obsessed with Sonic, IDW's portrayal does feel like what they've been trying and somewhat failing to do with Amy downplaying her romantic crush on Sonic. It's still playing it up for fun, but Amy's a lot more accepting of Sonic's wishes and jokingly teases him.

I also called it -

Spoiler

when Amy revealed she was there on business, and helped with the attack on the town, Sonic invited her to join him on his adventure. It wasn't him just rudely dismissing her.

Honestly? Amy and Sonic probably had some of the best interactions they've had in a very long time. I liked how they played off each other with shades of snark, especially Sonic's final sarcastic addressing her by rank only for her to threaten to slap him. It felt like a bit of actual banter between friends as opposed to Amy legitimately threatening to attack him for not loving her.

That one Sonic Heroes moment won't be forgotten apparently...

There's only 2 instances of her attacking him, at least in Riders she had an excuse.

Yeah, well

1 Endings of Sonic Rush and Black Knight have strong implication.

2 Two times is two times too often.

I wonder how they will handle Knuckles being lead of the resistance and guardian of master emerald.

They'll likely lampshade how he was a less than optimal choice for being the leader.

If I had to guess, he saw the script called for one of the villagers to come get Sonic and Amy when the Badnik Horde appeared as well as escort Amy to the Bunker and decided to get a little creative.

In the end, he/Editors/both liked the design enough to put her on the cover as one of the villagers being protected by The Lovely Couple and later give her a [nick]name.

Hopefully, we won't get another Last Roundup issue with Tabitha St. Germain.

But what looks like Mirage Saloon is, like, already on the cover for the next issue.?

Honestly, I actually prefer that kind of design mindset. It' reminds me of what Ben Bates used to do with "Uncle Pup," "Tumbiri," and the Hobidon.

When it's threatened, it instantly summons him back.

Is that a joke or is that canon?

EDIT:

This does kind of raise the question as to why Amy only got one episode to herself in season 2 and did not help out much in the finale, but that's just my opinion.

It's really not hard to write her better than that

Back on topic, I wonder if Rough or Tumble will spill any secrets about who hired them.

That's a good point. Cause I was honestly under the impression they'd just turn up being two assholes who Sonic and Knuckles tag team against before being recruited by whoever.
