IDW's Sonic the Hedgehog - Megathread

It’s late I know, the conversation moved waaay past it, but having just read the issue, there’s one thing I’d like to say about a earlier brought up theory with a certain ruby.

Spoiler

I don’t think that’s an illusion. Not only because Ian would flat out need to be lying about the new antagonistic force, but there’s a reasonable explanation. Eggman was fighting Sonic and co in Null Space before Eggman was beaten. With that said, I would take the cubes to simply be an aftereffect of Null Space being destroyed due to Sonic and co’s attacks on the Ruby and Eggman himself.

That in mind, I wonder if the new villain will try to cooperate with Eggman when he tries to take back his empire.

Given everything, I think it's going to be Neo Metal Sonic. I'd been wondering who would possibly be able to take over Eggman's empire as surely he'd be smart enough to ensure something that keeps his forces in line for him and only him.

But then I remembered the end scene from Rail Canyon in Heroes where Neo Metal Sonic shape-shifted into a Eggman puppet to trick your chosen team and copy their life data, so I could possibly see him taking Eggman's shape and pretending to be the doctor so he can lead his army.

Hi guys. Long time Sonic and Sega fan here. Loving the new IDW comics. I missed out on the Sega Shop bundle issue #4 Variant as I live in the UK and they didnt ship here. Does anyone know where I can find this now or does anyone have a spare they would be willing to sell me? I have tried ebay and other sites, I just cant find it. I missed two listings on ebay in May. I am mainly interested in the variant. Thanks for your time.

Unfortunately, that SEGA shop variant is extremely rare. Only 400 of them exist, apparently, making it by far the hardest to find IDW Sonic comic next to the Tidewater Comicon #1 variant just based on all the searching I've done over time. You could try joining the IDW Sonic comic squad on Facebook and ask around there, or perhaps the Sonic Reddit. I wish I knew where to point you to, but I know firsthand how utterly crazy rare that variant is. Best wishes! :)

Hi Flame. Thank you very much for your reply. It is really appreciated. I am part of that FB Sonic group, and I continue to ask in hope that there are people out there that have this variant and are not interested in keeping it. I have them all including the Tidewater cover (apparently there were only 100 of those made if Tidewater are to be believed).

Maybe someone will read my post on here one day and contact me. It is driving me crazy hunting this down.

If you see one anywhere or hear of anyone wishing to sell theirs could you let me know?

Again thank you for being so kind and helpful, it is really appreciated. :)

Side note about something in Issue 5:

Spoiler

Taking into consideration of the Eggman Land comment being an intentional malicious comment intended to reveal Eggman remembers everything, I think it's possibly his memory returning and causing him to say things he doesn't quite remember by mistake.

For example, his comment "I hope you can visit and see Eggman Land", especially given context - it's possible he meant to say the rebuilt village, but with his emerging memory, he said Eggman Land without really thinking.

The comic book store I finally found the IDW Sonic comics at had some higher priced variants. Don't remember which ones they were but I'll double check next time I go there.

I enjoyed ABT having all of Issue 2 to himself and would like to see him have total artistic control again. His style to me so far has been the best and I don't know if anyone else coloring his work would keep it at the same level.

No prob. I  know how you feel because I went mad searching for the Tidewater variant and then it finally popped up on eBay. I'm currently hunting for the Dynamic Forces high grade variant of #1, so I check comics on eBay a lot. If I see that variant of issue 4 anywhere I'll try to let you know. It'll go fast I'm sure.

I checked that store today and sorry they didn't have the one you were looking. They just had the RI-B variant of issue 4 for 20 bucks and an issue 3 variant for 20.

In Archie (and few games cutscenes, that acknowledge their existence) they power source (too many times in archie/ Silver in Rivals 2) that can be used for building stuff (Circus Park in Shadow/ Archie Death Egg II) that is popular enough to be used as currency. I highly suspect IDW will treat them the same way.

So the only big question is their source. Will they be factory made? Mined like coal? Float around? Or maybe people will just have them and never specify the answear?

Deepest Lore!

Seriously though I can see why most non-game material tends to ignore Rings for the most part. Like what do you do with them?

Post-reboot Archie mostly just used them as a power source. That and revitalizing someone's abilities (i.e. Rings giving Sonic boost energy) are sensible enough effects for them to have in-universe, since those are things they're actually used for in the games even if they're secondary.

The only thing that'd be kinda weird is...well, their main use in the games, protecting you from damage and scattering when you get hit. Not saying it can't be done but I can see why it's almost always left out.

That was something old Archie played with, but it was a time when the book was more comedy based and it could get away with stuff like that. #35, the billionth ring story, is the one that sticks out most clearly in my mind because Sonic does get hit by Robotnik's wrecking ball and his rings scatter and disappear. The Super Sonic vs. Hyper Knuckles special was another one, but Sonic and Knuckles were shown carrying all the rings and emeralds they collected.

Using them as a general energy source makes the most sense, same with the Red Star rings, and whatever else. It'd be kind of funny if they were just used as currency like some games, but it probably wouldn't fit this type of book. Or it could be like "Mega Drive" where it's just a visual gag whenever Sonic gets hurt.

Personally - I like how Post!Reboot handled it. Not only being a good source of power but due to the rarity of Red Star Rings, they can overclock power supplies - which granted Nicole access to her overclocked form.

A Red Ring was created for the first time accidentally in Spark of Life, right? I can't remember the exact circumstances though.

Could have a gag where some societies tried using them as currency but their tendency of disappearing made it, uh, unreliable.

I'd be cool with this actually, reminds me of Sonic the Fighters where you don't collect Rings but they still fly out of the characters whenever they get hit.

If I remember correctly, that was the case. Nicole then later used it to overclock her systems to fight Phage.

My issue with the rings being a visual gag is that , some fights I would rather not happen. Like characters being serious and then rings fly the fuck out.

I like them being temp power ups, like lowgrade temp chaos emeralds

I think being used sparingly and for more fun/lighthearted moments is all they'd need to do, really. I guess you can make an argument "but it's not consistent" but it's not really supposed to be.

I'm fine with power-ups or whatever, though.

Casinopolis literally shakes down local hedgehog. In an unrelated story, Casinopolis is closing because their funding keeps disappearing.
