IDW's Sonic the Hedgehog

Unfortunately there's mandates on that too, which is why the cast you see is usually very limited. I don't know they might allow the forgotten cast to make appearances or cameos, but the classic Chaotix are most certainly off the table for example.

I don't know if we can apply the same mandates Archie had to work under to IDW yet. From what little we've seen so far, it sounds like SEGA has a much more functional and agreeable working relationship with IDW, so we'll just have to wait and see.

Plus, under Archie, they were working under the "Classic Sonic = younger Modern Sonic" premise, which might have hamstrung what they could do.

I forget if it was Iizuka or someone else who said they saw the Modern Chaotix as different characters than the Classic version, but if they're going with different versions, it would make more sense now than ever before.

Iizuka, way back in 2003. He explicitly said that they didn't bring back the old Chaotix but remade them new from the ground up.

The problem with them is that they seem to be a very special case in which they can't be shown whatsoever. Archie never showed them (after their redesign to modern), there's been no merchandise showing them bar very niche books specifically talking in a historical context, and even Mania didn't reference classic Chaotix despite having over a dozen references to the game. It seems to me that they just want the Chaotix to be modern-only characters.

Even Ian's made comment on how dicey the situation was with referencing Chaotix the game. What they did in the reboot was already pushing, and directly making Chaotix the game part of their backstories was pretty much right out, not something which applied to the likes of Sonic 2 GG or Tails Adventure.

Not just that, but the "Sonic is a being that ages, and was once younger" premise.

I feel torn on this. I want them to have freedom to do what they want, but I also want a comic that at least accurately portrays the game's lore.. but with that comes another host of issues, like SoJ not communicating every aspect of their bible, or possible changes that could make what they say one time irrelevant the next, or their own canon just not making much sense. But people that don't understand the concept of alternate continuities claiming things that affect game characters like "Olgilvie Maurice Hedgehog" are canon is annoying.

Speaking of the bible, weird that they cared enough to instill a mandate that Sonic's world can only be called "Sonic's World", but nothing about the dreaded "Two Worlds". Iizuka spoke of it even in 2010, so it was a thing before the mandate.

More updates from today's Sonic stream:

-No known price per issue yet

-Mighty, Ray, and the Hooligans are apparently fair game for this comic

-They can't say yet whether this is a new continuity yet

-These issues will be available in comic stores

-Ian strongly hinted that Silver will be in one of the Forces comics

-No Mephiles, apparently

-No origins planned for the cast yet. This first year will focus solely on the "here and now"

-This is primarily a Modern-based comic, but look forward to bits from Classic and Boom

-They don't know if there will be a subscription service yet

-Tyson Hesse will be involved in the comics, "to some capacity"

-This comic will have some familiar artists, some new

-Still no comment on the Freedom Fighters

-Shadow and Blaze confirmed

What role will they play, they can bring many plot ideas by themselves as solo characters and have both been main leads for their own games stories.  I hope Ian doesn't shaft Shadow being execulsive to humans/GUN because he's just as centered towards adventures Sonic is, but more professionally and Blaze is Sonic from another demension. I could Shadow being Sonic being the Wolverine to Sonic's Spider-Man.

This, along with them not bringing info about Chaotix to AAUK when he was doing Easter eggs in Generations, is more evidence that Chaotix was either X-Treme/RoL/Saturn levels of development hell (wechidna this, Nat That, an unpopular addon here, unusual level design there...), there are legal issues going on, or maybe sega just don’t like the 32X in general anymore..?  The thought  that it simply had no sonic team involvement whatsoever has no real value, as games with equally little have been referenced.

I think whatever their direction is, I think its going to be less team dark and more just shadow , in shadow's case. Blaze is... I have no goddamned idea what I even think they are gonna do, while They are allowed more freedom  I can see sega being " whatever you do, we kinda want this sort of like this " so I have no... idea.

I'm stumped on blaze. I don't even know if the girl in forces

I'm willing to cut Ian some slack on how Cream was portrayed because a large part of her being out of combat was apparently mandated (although that makes it all the more baffling why he'd put her in the Freedom Fighters in that case). The Unleashed arc was not a good place for a non-combatant to get attention because it was fight-intensive.

Hey, I just realised, that might go some way to explain why Cream isn't in the resistance in Forces too.

Oh my goodness, you're right! Plus, I don't think they have a 3d model for Vanilla yet, so there's that too.

Wonder where Omega is, though.

As far as the Freedom Fighters go, here's a really simple compromise: just change the system in how they work.

I'm surprised that people mainly think that these characters need to work in a group than as individual characters that can stand on their own yet work as a collective group. There have been many times when these very characters were split apart from each other, whether by necessity, by force, or by other circumstances that had them break away.

But you know one thing I definitely liked about this to an extent? The characters often interacted or split with different characters, and in ways that made sense. And I find it far more preferable that they do that and mix the cast instead of grouping them the way the games have done.

Even better, they didn't have characters around "just because", which is what makes Ian's comeback a bigger bonus because he keeps in mind that characters should do more than simple be around because they're expected and should be available based on their circumstances--anyone who went to the Sol Dimension got there under believable reasons; the "Classic 4" were hardly together because 1) Knuckles was busy guarding the Master Emerald and had his own priorities and only got involved when those were clearly under threat, 2) Eggman was a more fluid threat and every region need protection of some kind instead of someone giving up ground to him (whether it was the FFs, GUN, etc); and Silver had a lot more room to maneuver thanks to Genesis Portals instead of popping up with little reason as to why he's came from the future; among many other nuances.

If anything, I want this to have coherent logic when it comes to what character(s) appear and why beyond fan bias. For all his faults, Ian and the Archie team did this far better than most writers I know, and I want that to continue. The games have been going downhill on this aspect since arguably Heroes.

Exactly.

Didn't Ian initially explained Cream can't fight because she isn't "trained" like Tails and Charmy, then said it was ooc because Cream was a pacifist, THEN said it was part of a mandate? At least, that's what I remember.

Pretty much. Back in the old continuity, it made perfect sense from an instory standpoint because she was so late to the game(pun not intended). She more or less always filled the role of the naive newcomer from the start and that meant she could the double duty of getting Tails' old role while being Amy's protege.

It was when he had to reboot the book and go for a more action focused direction that that mandate became relevant if he didn't know about it before.

Lets put that in context. (Not to turn this into an Archie thread, but I feel like this is an important point to make).

In combat, Rouge has always hit WAAAAAY above her weight class. We are talking about a gal who goes toe to toe with Knuckles here. The longest fight scene in the history of the comics was an extremely hard hitting (and exceedingly well drawn)  Slugfest between her and Bunnie Rabbot. She's put top level hand to hand specialists like Julie-Su in their place with ease, and she makes a mockery of lesser opponents. (Ask Fiona or Bean/Bark).

Getting TKO'd by Rouge is by no means a slight.

Yeah, it wasn't until the encyclopedia came out that I started to realize just how versatile Rouge is from a skillset standpoint.

Rouge is OP confirmed.

For my most grounded answer I don't want any character from any other media showing up, but another side of me wants to see Grimer from StC show up just because. I've always liked Grimer and it would be weird/interesting to see Ian try to write him and have him be subservient to basically SEGA Eggman now.

Well, I discussed the idea more or less because well, I love the way IDW does their Transformers and Ninja Turtles comics. Taking characters and elements from many different past continuities and putting a whole new spin on them. And I hope they do the same with Sonic.

Chris can still go die in a hole.

So, what characters from Sonic cartoons do you want to see in IDW Sonic? (Not counting blatant choices like the Freedom Fighters)

Some I would like to see include (but not limited to) Breezie, the S.S.S.S.S.S. Squad, Sonia, Manic, Cosmo, and Sticks.

Any that would make sense in a story they want to tell.

I'd like to see Sally, Rotor, Antoine, Bunnie, and maybe Nicole in reduced roles as reoccurring characters like Knuckles, the Chaotix, Team Dark, Big, or the Babylon Rogues. Not main characters, but part of the extended cast. Preferably I'd like to see them mostly independent from one another, though with Nicole as Sally's computer like in SatAM (though with personality like in the Archie comic) while Antoine and Bunnie would be clearly attracted to one another while not married. I think having them married sort of forces them to be with each other to a point their individual characters suffer for it. It worked in the pre-reboot because of the community aspect of New Mobotropolis, but in post-reboot and especially a more Sega Sonic comic, it limits their personalities from really shining.

After them, probably Snively. I didn't enjoy seeing him as a GUN scientist in the post reboot, but I liked him being an independent evil scientist that occasionally worked with Eggman like he was in flashbacks. I think that would be a pretty good role for him, occasional butt monkey Eggman can threaten and other times as a sort of villain of the week.

I've always liked Chuck and would love to see him as Sonic's reoccurring mentor figure like Roshi is for Goku once becomes his equal. He doesn't need to be his biological uncle for that role, and having everyone call him "Uncle Chuck" seems like a nice fit. The series has a distinct lack of older hero characters.

Part of me wants Naugus just because he would be a nice reoccurring villain, but honestly the reboot kinda soured me on him. Pre-reboot he had a decent personality that improved on his SatAM counterpart, but post-reboot he felt very hollow. He's the SatAM character I'd like to see but be least disappointed with not having.

So... that's a lot of SatAM. Others...

I liked what post-reboot did with Breezie. If we could get that version back I wouldn't mind. Scratch, Grounder, and Coconuts would be nice to have running around, but they honestly feel superfluous with the Hooligans, Babylon Rogues, Orbot & Cubot etc. existing. No one else from AOSTH really stands out. Except I demand Captain Memo and Lieutenant Bananas.

No characters from the OVA or Underground really appeal to me. From X, Bokkun could be fun, but only really in the specific role as Eggman's errand boy. I've always loved the character of Sam Speed and would love to see Sonic get his human rival back. If the series was allowed to explore outer space I'd like to see Cosmo and the Seedrians and the Metarex appear, but I don't need to see them become regulars or anything - much as I'd like to for Cosmo.

I like Chris. A lot. Having him appear would be awesome. *awaits tomatoes, bricks, and other projectiles*

From Boom, Sticks seems fairly obvious and I wouldn't mind her being incorporated into the extended cast. I'm also a big fan of Perci and Nominatus, so if they could show up I'd be happy. Apart from them - I'd be able to handle Dave and Zooey. That's as much love as the rest of Boom's cast can muster from me.

Comic wise, there's a slew of pre-reboot Archie characters I could name but given the state of those characters I don't really see a point. Post reboot, my favorites are Cassia and Clove, but given how tied they are to the Egg Bosses concept which I'm not a fan of, I think it'd be hard to bring them in while keeping what made them appealing to begin with. I liked the Desert Raiders trio (Spike, Sonar, and Trevor) and seeing them again would be cool. Razor and Crusher were a lot of fun. Fixit will always be hilarious (probably the best Knuckles' side kick character). I love Pane the Boar's design. Can I count Madonna? Would she technically be a Sega character? Regardless, she's awesome.

That leaves Fleetway. There are plenty of characters I could like to see reinvented: Johnny, Tenno, Porker, Ebony, Shortfuse, Morain & Errol, Plunder, Brutus, the Metallix, the Drakon. But ultimately I think all of them would need major changes to provide an interesting role in a more Sega Sonic continuity. Fleetway Sonic is just very much a product of the comics environment it was developed in, and the execution of many of its concepts would need to change to reflect the Sonic brand. (Off topic, but I've been curious. I know the Fleetway characters are owned by their respective creators. Where do Sally Acorn, Porker Lewis, and Johnny Lightfoot stand though? Shouldn't they all be Sega characters?)

But, that's all me kind of wishing as though Sega wouldn't but the kibosh on almost all of them like I know they would. A fun thought experiment though.

As a matter of fact, yes. IDW has a penchant for bringing back obscure characters. So seeing Katella again after 20+ years doesn't seem too far-fetched.

Breezie is a definite keep for me. I'd also like to see the more obscure AoStH characers like DA BEARS!

I'd love to see the Freedom Fighters as the next guy, but only in supporting roles.

OVA, yeah. No one there really sticks out. I can see Old Man Owl being a one-shot character and that's it. Characters like Aerith--I mean Sara make my ears bleed.

Maybe Sonia and Manic could be a band duo completely unrelated to Sonic. Why, maybe the comic epilogue for Sonic Underground might actually see the light of day!

Controversial statement time. What if Cosmo appears in the IDW comics and DOESN'T get killed off? And while she doesn't become a series regular like the main quartet, she's a major recurring character who tags along with Sonic and crew every once in a while?

Aside from Sticks, characters like Comedy Chimp and Dave the Intern would be cool to see.

Dude, don't let one adaption ruin the experience for you, just skip and move along.

For IDW, I hope we'll get another TTT/PPP/GCC type story for the comics since those were some of my favorites because they all have several things in common.

-It involves teams with interesting interactions and dynamics. (Team Rose, Dark, Chaotix etc.)

-They're primarily about a hunt for an Emerald.(Sol, Chaos)

-Hooligans are involved. (Or just Bean & Bark)

-Several game characters fighting over said Emerald.

-Did I mention Bean & Bark again?

Easily the most fun stories.

He was apparently planning a third one with the Babylon Rogues vs the Hooligans according to Bumblekast.
