Its almost like the engine bugged out due to his speed and he clipped a tree (which by the laws of classic era design is likely to have a spring hidden in it). He jumped and all his momentum just... died.

Jumped just before hitting the tip of the slope and pulled back on the controls to skip the rest of the sequence, methinks.

Probably didn't hold the jump button as well, controlling jump height off of certain slopes/ramps was always a thing so I'm definitely sure that was part of it.
