Sonic Mania: Sequel Speculation (Spoilers)

A super No.1 washedupgamer

A thing of note about the Hard Boiled Heavies. They weren't really there to begin with. They're all just your standard looking Egg robos. Hard to bring them back in that context unless you involve the phantom ruby again.

Then again. For a sequel of the same name to come about. You'd need the phantom ruby to bring back the illusions any how. Since Sonic Mania is the title of it.

I sure as hell didn't agree to that. The ratio should be 100:0. Not one single old level.

Discussion Questions

1. Should the sequel’s graphical presentation stay in the Saturn Era style like the first game? Or would you prefer something different? (For Example: Sonic Advance style sprites, but with Classic designs)

2. Should the Zone and Act structure stay the same? (2 Acts per Zone, Boss at the end of each Act)

3. Should they change the Bonus Stages and Special Stages?

4. Are there features from other Sonic Games that you’d like to see in the sequel? (Examples: World Map, Collection Room, Score Attack, Bestiary, etc)

5. Should the partner system be more fleshed out?

6. Should Sonic have all his abilities available up to this point (Super Peelout, Insta-Shield, and Drop Dash) or stay nerfed?

Story Discussion Questions

S1. Do you want Mania and its sequels to be considered the Phantom Ruby Saga, or should the sequel focus on something else?

S2. Should the HBH return? If you say “Yes”, should new members be added/created?

S3. Are there any other Classic characters you want as playable characters besides Amy? Or maybe just as a cameo?

1. Yes, but make Sonic a darker blue.

2. Yes.

3. Of course.

4. From what I've heard, you can't go back to normal from Super, so add that. Also map it to a separate button.

5. As I haven't yet played, what partner system? You mean the traditional Tails and Sonic stuff? If so, no. I'm happy with it the way it's been. I wouldn't want something like Sonic 4 Episode 2.

6. I think he should. I think right now Drop Dash is mapped to holding Jump while in the air, right? Maybe change it to while holding down, so it's harder to mix up with the Insta-Shield. I'd like the Jump Dash from Advance

S1. Doesn't really matter to me.

S2. I don't really care either way. I like their designs, but I don't need to see them again in a sequel. I'd prefer new villains. And if there are old ones, I'd prefer Team Hooligan or the Battle Bird Armada.

S3. I can't think of anyone off the top of my head. I guess it would be kind of neat to see a modern character with a classic design.

Merged this with a topic similarly discussing what people would want out of a Mania 2.

~

As generic as this'll sound, for the most part I just want them to keep doing what they're doing. Maybe less (or 0!) returning Zones, but beyond that they're going in the right direction with 2D Sonic. What I'd really like to see is more new stuff even beyond Zones. Amy is (imo) a must, I'm still really disappointed she wasn't in Mania. New modes could be interesting, though I'm not sure what else there could be--maybe a Score Attack mode / score-based leaderboards?

That said I'll give my thoughts on Sonictrainer's questions:

4 hours ago, Sonictrainer said:

1. Should the sequel’s graphical presentation stay in the Saturn Era style like the first game? Or would you prefer something different? (For Example: Sonic Advance style sprites, but with Classic designs)

Hmmm, I'd like them to evolve it a bit with each following game. Kinda make it as if these games really were coming out over time, I guess.

Quote

2. Should the Zone and Act structure stay the same? (2 Acts per Zone, Boss at the end of each Act)

Sure, the 2 Act structure works perfectly. I wouldn't be against a third Act for a boss with a bit of platforming before / after though--CD kinda does this.

Quote

3. Should they change the Bonus Stages and Special Stages?

Bonus Stages: make it so you can get power ups and extra Rings from 'em like in 3&K. Other than that, do whatever with 'em.

Special Stages: I'd like them to take the concept of Mania's special stages and build on it. I remember back before they were revealed I thought maybe we'd get a 3D special stage that involves some rolling physics, ala 3D Blast Saturn's. Maybe slopes and stuff would complicate a special stage like Mania's too much though, I dunno. Just a thought.

Quote

4. Are there features from other Sonic Games that you’d like to see in the sequel? (Examples: World Map, Collection Room, Score Attack, Bestiary, etc)

I'd LOVE a bestiary, that sort of thing is my jam. Also I'd actually like a ranking system like modern Sonic games, though I'd want it to be a separate mode.

Quote

5. Should the partner system be more fleshed out?

Hmmm, I wouldn't be against that. Maybe have it so Sonic or Knuckles can not only follow you, but can do something for you like Tails can? I'm not sure what that could entail though. Well, Knuckles could break through things only he could, I guess, but that's about all I got.

Quote

6. Should Sonic have all his abilities available up to this point (Super Peelout, Insta-Shield, and Drop Dash) or stay nerfed?

I think the peel out should be standard, but I'm fine with not having the insta-shield as anything other than an unlockable. And the drop dash is great, keep it for sure.

Quote

S2. Should the HBH return? If you say “Yes”, should new members be added/created?

S3. Are there any other Classic characters you want as playable characters besides Amy? Or maybe just as a cameo?

1. I'd love for the Phantom Ruby to be a recurring object in the series, so sure, why not?

2. Absolutely, and yeah sure it'd be cool to see a few new ones.

3. If SEGA let them do it, it'd be cool to see a few characters from the Classic era playable. Chaotix are probably off the table, but everyone else could go either way?

Sonic Mania is awesome.

Being able to play as Classic Sonic, Classic Tails, and Classic Knuckles through a selection of new Zones and remixed Zones, while collecting Rings, Medallions, and Chaos Emeralds, and fighting Badniks, Super Badniks, HBH, and Eggman is amazing.

Though time will tell if Sonic Mania 2 will be a thing just yet, I wanted to discuss all the things we’d love to see change or remain the same in the possible sequel.

NOTES:

  • Most of us have agreed that in a Sonic Mania sequel, Classic Amy should be added as a playable character. While some could debate that she doesn’t Damsel out of Distress until Sonic Adventure, she was playable in some of the Genesis and Saturn Era spinoff games. Plus, Sonic Adventure 2 sweeps her to the sidelines anyway.
  • We’ve also agreed that in the Zone Ratio should be reversed, having mostly New Zones and maybe 4 or less remixed ones.
  • 5 Words: Zone Transitions for Every Zone

S3. Are there any other Classic characters you want as playable characters besides Amy? Or maybe just as a cameo?

1. The graphics should continue to evolve a little. Maybe go for top-of-the-line Saturn this time and progress to hand drawn graphics down the line.

2. Yes. But throw in the occasional third act to mix things up.

3. Yes. Even bring back the Sonic 1 and 2 Special Stages as bonus stages now, akin to Blue Sphere.

4. Bestiary, Score Attack, World Map, and how about a lore-gallery dealio where you can read up on the lore of the game and how it ties to past and future entries?

5. Not really.

6. YES! Make Game Gear and even certain modern abilities as unlockable moves. For modern moves, they could focus on the ones from the seven pre-colors handhelds.

7. Yes. Make it a sort of sequel to Forces. Maybe even adding Modern Sonic as a playable character.

8. Yes. And add some new membership, and upgrade the extant ones with new patterns. Not just them and Metal, but what if Eggman pulled Tails Doll and Metal Knuckles back in the ring, constructing a new Mecha Sonic to boot?

9. I'd like to see Modern Sonic as playable to return the favor to Forces. We could also use him to tie up the Little Planet plothole from Episode 2. Also, I'd like to see the Freedom Fighters in some capacity as a memorial tribute to the comics and western canon.

1. Yes, the same graphical style.

2. Yes, two acts with a mid-boss and main boss.

4. Bonus stages should be shorter, momentary diversions you enter for a shield, some rings, or a life. Special stages should be different as well, keeping the tradition of always trying something new with them.

5. I think it's mostly fine, but I would love the ability to pair any character with any character by default.

6. Let them stay but provide the option to select which you want to use on a save. If you want multiple by mapping to different buttons that would be fine, but the default should be the same simple one button set up it has always been.

S3. Are there any other Classic characters you want as playable characters besides Amy? Or maybe just as a cameo?

1. I'd prefer Sonic 3 sprites, or at least an option. And darker blue (this nearly cyan one looks weird). Why does Sonic Boom has the same blue tone as modern Sonic, and classic Sonic is that light?

2. I wouldn't mind adding small battles during an act, like Treasure games.

3. Special Stages: I want a new one in each Sonic game. Bonus Stages: yes, blue spheres seems better as a separate mode for the main menu. For Bonus Stages it's better a short minigame.

4. Red Rings (or any other item) to unlock something. The blue spheres medals are fine, but as I'd prefer it to be a separate mode in main menu, they wouldn't be in the main game. I'd rather have collectibles during each act.

5. There's no way to make a working coop mode for Classic Sonic. You can zoom out the screen, but when Sonic is running really fast, it makes no sense.

6. I'd do this: make insta-shield if you quickly press and release the jump button while on air. And if you keep pressing the button, activate the drop dash. I'd also make it so you could use drop dash although you have an elemental shield (one button activates the shield attach, and the other the instashield or drop dash depending on how long you press the button). And ALSO, I'd extend this to Tails and Knuckles: one button makes Tails fly and Knuckles glide, and the second button activates the elemental shield attack. Why the hell not? It's just adding a second button, and it would enhance the game a lot.

S1. The phantom ruby saga sound nice to me.

S2. Yes. And I wouldn't need new members.

S3. Not really. I wouldn't mind if, with the phantom ruby power, Classic Sonic could meet Shadow, for instance.

  • 2 months later...

Here's is my list of things I want.

- No Saturn limitations. Go all in. Pixel art or handrawn. Change the art style.

- No returning levels. A full package of completly new zones.

- More playable characters. Amy? Mighty? Ray? Chaotix? Heck, even Honey?

- Return of the Hard-boiled Heavies and the Hooligans as villains.

- If possible... Why not make Omelette canon? As a Bowser Jr./ Nina Cortex for Eggman? Make her the recurring boss in the game, and let Eggman be the final boss.

- Tyson Hesse for the artwork, and Tee Lopes for the music. Hopefully with more variety in genre. The party feel was cool for Mania, but kinda overblown. Next game could have some more atmospheric pieces, with a more adventure feel.

- NO overabundance of level tropes. Let the game have only one city level, and one industrial level.

It could work this way:

City, Forest, Ruins, Canyon, Park, Mountain, Beach, Industry, Cave, Casino, Swamp, Palace, Space.

I hope of they use pixel style again, make it slightly different. Like in some way, closer to tyson Hees's classic sonic style. That would be rad. More original zones that are colorful, and bring back bonus stages that let you earn elemental shields. Dunno why that wasn't in mania.

Personally while I do want Amy to be playable, I don't want her to use her Advance 1 moveset. I've mentioned before that I think one of the classic games' strongest points is the predominant use of one button for character actions, and I want Amy to adhere to that as well. So, she should be as fast as the other characters, have the ability to spin, and all that good stuff. An idea I had for a jump-button hammer attack is a spinning hammer move that operates similarly to Sonic's insta-shield, except if you use it on an enemy it enables her to double-jump. Maybe you can make it so that it also works against surfaces as well, so imagine something like Mario's triple jump in a Sonic game that you can keep using in succession.

I do like Amy in Advance 1, and I've played those Amy fan hacks for Sonic 1 and 2. They're great, but in an official classic Sonic game, I'd rather she follow the same gameplay rules that everyone else does. With my idea, I think it'd be super fun bouncing around levels and using surface/slope physics to your advantage to pull off wacky stunts.

There'll probably never be a better time to introduce the Hooligans as actual characters in a mainline Sonic game than in a Mania sequel, and I'd honestly be all aboard assigning them the game's quirky miniboss squad role.  They could make good foils for our protagonists, villainous animals who serve as both doubles and callbacks to Knuckles's role in S3&K (and of course Fang's spin-off appearances).  In that regard, though, if the number of playable characters climbs to four, we may need a new Hooligan.  Perhaps controversial, but I think pre-Modern Rouge would be an interesting choice.

Seeing Honey playable would be cute. Maybe even the Freedom Fighters could show up? (Not necessarily playable, however). Metal Sonic would be a decent recurring boss as well. Maybe expand upon Eggatha and have a whole bunch of Koopaling “Egg-fan” characters, ala the Hard-Boiled Heavies from the first? I also think an idea as inventive as Press Garden is in order. Maybe a barnyard? Or something incredibly abstract accessed via the Special Zone?

Just let Taxman , Stealth and the team do another one with different and original levels.

Mania in my opinion was damn near perfect , if its not broke don't fix it.

I think it's better for everyone to push forward, It's nice that Mania had returning zones but i won't be so excited if they are handed the same situation if a sequel occurs, I'll probably be only fine with returning zones if they were merged or turned completely upside down.

I think it's obvious that Amy is most demanded feature (and original level themes). Funny, considering that no one is sure how she should play. Oh, I'm sure a lot of you have ideas, but we don't have already tested playstyle that worked well (Advance games was... far from perfect). Also, I do wonder if her classic look will be a problem, considering how different it is from her modern self. Then again, so is Eggman.

I'm still think modern elements could be added as DLC or something, but I stop here. Last time I suggested it, I got nearly crucified.

My biggest demand is to move forward. I don't want new Death Egg or stealing Master Emerald again. New zones, new bosses, new, plot. (unless they want to continues with Phantom Ruby story, that's ok I suppouse). I also would like for insta shield (and peel out I guess) to be usable from the start. Playable Metal would be awesome too.

I´ll be happy if there would be like 1 or 2 returning zones. The key point here is that they should contribute to the plot.

I could live with the franchise having returning levels just a little more commonly, at not more than one or two at an extreme per game - but they would have to really sell us on a convincing need for the area to be returned to.  A new gameplay idea which ties perfectly into that zone, or some plot idea from which an old zone is completely inextricable.  It shouldn't just be for fanservice, no matter how much fun that would be.

Think it’d be cool if they followed straight on from Classic Sonic’s departure in Forces to find Eggman started to take over during his period of absence?

A lá Sonic Chronicles?

S2. Should the HBH return? If you say “Yes”, should new members be added/created?

S3. Are there any other Classic characters you want as playable characters besides Amy? Or maybe just as a cameo?

1. I would enjoy to keep a pixel art style, but don't give them selves any limitations, I want them to go nuts with it

2. I would actually like them to bring back 3 acts. I think it would work well again with many differences with each act. Imagine 12 brand new, 3 act zones.

3. Bring back how 3K had them with the bonus stages acting as a way to get shields and having multiple of them, but all of them should be unique. I do want the special stages to return from mania however.

4. I would like to see score attack and a bestiary, and maybe even a collection room, but no world map. Keep the transition cutscenes.

5. Yes, perhaps allowing you to pick a lead and partner like advance 3, with unique abilities between them.

6. I say bring back peel-out, and let you choose between drop dash and insta shield. Perhaps even a new move.

S1 - No, I would like the sequels to focus on their own saga. Like how sonic 1 was not part of the death egg saga, make a new saga for the sequels that's not a tie in.

S2 - Yes, and I think that new members should be added. I would also like Mecha Sonic to return. Save Metal for a CD sequel.

S3 - I want Mighty back. Perhaps give him the mega-mix abilities with shield store and an insta shield!

--------------------------

Other Notes

--------------------------

- Perhaps an option to have sonic 3 style sprites for people who perfer them

- I want omelette as a canon villian, with a 3 act structure, it could go

Act 1 : Super Badnik Miniboss

Act 2 : VS Omelette

Act 3 : VS Eggman

- I would like the super emeralds to return. If we are gonna have a longer game, it makes sense to bring back 14 emeralds to get

- I want another collectible like the medallions to return

- I want a full game of original zones in a original location with an original story, but I would absolutely adore to have old levels as a sort of unlockable

(If this happens, PLEASE give us Mystic Cave and Ice Cap)

Sega would probably have to do something like, say, buy the character design for that Eggman niece fancharacter to use her in a game, like what Valve did for TF2's announcer, and I don't think they would be willing to jump through any hoops for that. It surprises me that people entertain this concept as an idea worth speculating could happen.

1. Yeah! Try to go further in graphics as we go on!

2. Having all 3 Act Zones is an interesting return to the roots.

3. Sure! And 1 And 2’s Special Stages should definitely become bonus stages.

5. That shouldn’t be the only Dimps feature to return, though. How about boost mode as well?

6. Yes. In fact, I think the other characters could use the peel-out as well. Maybe some stuff from the 8-bit games?

S1. I think as a compromise we can both continue  the Phantom Ruby saga for Modern to finish (or better yet to open up the Adventure universe) and set up a new one for Classic to pursue.

S2. Would Tails Doll And Metal Knuckles also work?

S3. That would make a nice even roster of Sonic/Tails/Knuckles/Amy/Modern Sonic/Mighty. Maybe include Honey and maybe even a new character as well?

Other Notes:

I think Metal Sonic could be the recurring Mid boss instead of Eggatha. And yes, old zones could just be unlockable this time.

Yes, this struck me as well.  Omelette is right out, there's basically zero chance of it happening for business and copyright reasons alone - and that's before you even consider Sonic Team's opinion of what it would imply about the canon; she would have to turn out to be a robot or something.  The most I'd hope for is another inverted Eggman boss just as a nod to the concept.

S2. Should the HBH return? If you say “Yes”, should new members be added/created?

S3. Are there any other Classic characters you want as playable characters besides Amy? Or maybe just as a cameo?

1. I say do whatever they want. I trust them to make anything good. I'd like for there to be no limit in the sprite graphics if they do those. Go absolutely nuts.

2. I like having a boss at the end of each stage. I wouldn't mind 3 acts either. I'd like for Omelette to be like the act one boss. I know she probably won't be a thing, but she really should be XD

3. I want to say yes.....but I enjoy the current special stage so damn much. It's so good and better than everything before it. I'd be up for change if it at least is as good as the current special stages. Fuck the half pipe.

4. Score Attack and bestiary I guess would be fine. No world map though. I just like stage transitions to keep being a thing, and have a level select if needed to pick a level. As well as not have save progress be limited to just act 1 of a zone.

5. I believe so yes. Controlling 2P Tails could be a bit better. I'd even like for their to be a little tag action. Maybe just like a single action to not get too overly complex.

6. Never got the point of Peel out. Yeah it's faster than spin dash but eh....I never found it good. I would like for the Insta Shield and Drop dash to be part of his arsenal. And speaking of the insta shield I'd like for all the characters to have a mid air attack that is only available like for a single frame or something. Like Tails slashes his tails at the enemy for a split second and Knuckles has like a forward punch. However these abilities have to be timed right or else you get hit so they can't be spammed to no end like the Super Cape from Mario World. I'd like this as there's plenty of times where I want to hit an enemy in front of me but there's no side attack if I am in the air. I think it would be a cool addition to keep the flow going without losing speed and add a little combat bonus. You can never go wrong with more versatility in a character.

S1: Something else. We're done with the Ruby and the less of Forces being referenced, the better. I wouldn't mind the hard boiled heavies sticking around either. And Omelette....please become a thing XD

S2: Yes and potentially yes. Wouldn't be against new members. They ain't a necessity, but I don't mind em. Let em stick around so we can kinda have them be akin to the Koopalings.

S3: Not really a fan of Amy, but don't mind her inclusion. Hopefully without the crappy Sonic A1 no spin dash crap. I wouldn't mind a Classic Designed Shadow. But if we stick to core classics....Metal Sonic....uh.....Vector maybe. I just really don't understand the appeal of Mighty....I really don't get it. He's just a reskinned Sonic.

In terms of Story, I hope Little Planet is involved somewhat again. Anything connected to the Little Planet is a huge plus for me.

I would like to see a well-made Wacky Workbench, but that would need Phantom Ruby again (taboo for many) and including a non-original stage (taboo for many).
