The Ambitions of a 300 IQ Genius. Dr. Eggman What's his Motivation?

Long live the Eggman Empire!

Greetings. Perhaps this has been done before but with Sonic Forces and the knowledge of his victory, claiming 99% of the world. A question suddenly occurred to me and I don't think I'd ever thought about it before. What is Eggmans motivation for conquering the world?

I thought about it in the status updates and figured, maybe it's worth doing an in-depth discussion on the matter? While Eggman in the TV shows and Comics has more time and content to work with and explore the character, things about Sega Eggman are a little more ambiguous. What inspires him? What kind of ruler would he be? How is his moustache kept so fluffy?

Ego:

Ego plays a big part in his actions. His face is his own logo and he names his deadliest weapons after himself. He has no problem making a large scale public spectacle, like flying his giant fortress over a city or appearing on every television screen with an ultimatum. But to be mocked or treated as a nuisance infuriates him to such an extent that he's willing to destroy an entire country just to make a point. He will not tolerate disobedience either, although he is usually on the receiving end of a beating, he does not run away in fear. He might run away if confronted by a crocodile, chameleon and Bee demanding money, but he won't run from a giant monster threatening global destruction. Funnily enough, out of all the attempt at conquest with assistance from another, the one time he wasn't betrayed was when he was working with his past self.

With that in mind, what could his motivating for world conquest be? Does he want to bring peace to the world be bringing it under one rule? Does he want to be famous and leave his mark on history? Does he believe the ones in charge now are vastly inferior to the job at hand?

They all sound promising to me, look at his trademark badniks for a second.

They are all based on animals in some way and are powered by them too. Could that mean Eggman even thinks evolution is inferior to his own knowledge and twists nature to match his own vision of an ideal world? You could kind of see that in the comparisons of past, present and future versions of levels in Sonic CD. Past ones looking more greener while future ones looking more mechanized. I also think perhaps it was Professor Gerald, his grandfather, that inspired him to follow his pursuit of the sciences. Obviously having no knowledge of his later breakdown. Although he did sound proud when telling the others about him.

I wonder if the lyrics to his theme from Sonic Adventure 2 will add any new details.

  • The story begins,
  • But who's gonna win?
  • You know where the danger lies within.
  • Aboard the ARK,
  • A genius at heart,
  • Wanting to unlock the mysteries of life.

  • I am the Eggman, that's what I am,
  • I am the Eggman, I got the master plan.
  • I am the Eggman, that's what I am,
  • I am the Eggman, I got the master plan.

  • I'm plotting my schemes,
  • Wherever I go,
  • They're perfect in every way.
  • I'd love to destroy,
  • The blue one you know,
  • He's an obstacle who always gets in my way.

  • I must, play this game by my rules,
  • I will, conquer the world with my tools.
  • All my machines, are made for destruction,
  • I will build, my empire.
  • I will succeed, and you will see,
  • With my machine, there is no retreat.

  • I am the enemy, I will succeed,
  • My mission, yeah, I must complete.
  • My name is Eggman, don't forget my name,
  • If you ask me again, I'll tell you the same!

Just like you might expect from a man with a big ego, his name is repeated a helluva lot. Parts sound like he's out to prove himself, possibly to a certain blue hedgehog. I assume the first verse is about Gerald, but wouldn't it be strange to think it could be a young Eggboy? I dunno...

The lines about his own rules and referring to himself as the enemy does also suggest that while he demands respect or obedience. He doesn't care if you like him or not.

Still...it's interesting to think about. Does his conquest of the world have a hidden noble agenda or is he doing it just to show everybody that he can? What are your thoughts?

An old headcannon of mine: I've always thought of him as a man who tries to handle his mid-life crisis by taking over the world but his sanity has been slowing disappearing with each defeat by a teenage hedgehog every time.

It's because he simply wants to, just like how Sonic does good because he wants to.
I don't see a complicated or hidden reason behind it really, Eggman is just a goofy but threatening villain that wants to paint the world in his glorious image.

His IQ may be 300, but his common sense and judgement are sorely lacking. Archie Eggman was an exception in most cases, but Boom Eggman fits this theory. Power windows in a mech...

I think it might be interesting if there was once a shred of nobility in him, right at the core and origin of his ambitions.  But the hubris must always have been there, must always have been the predominant factor, and if there was ever any noble side to Eggman then I think his ambitions have become so twisted that he's lost sight of that original philanthropic touch.  I do think that he must believe that the world would be a much better place - for a given value of "better" - under his rule, but being able to plaster his face everywhere and turn the planet into a giant temple to himself is clearly every bit as much a motivating factor.

I think he thinks that a robot world would be perfect because there would be no hunger, disease, wars, or anything like that.

He could have been initially motivated in part by the perceived injustice done by GUN upon Prof. Gerald Robotnik, his grandfather and hero at young age. And given that the Eclipse Cannon has a similar Eggman-face on it despite being dormant for over 50 years, it's safe to say he inherented Gerald's apparent ego as well and turned it up to eleven.

His more concrete goal was to create Robotnikland, the ultimate city from which he would rule over a society of scientists. Over time, this vision transformed more into Eggmanland, a giant, hellish themepark-like factory.

I have always thought that he has some sort of twisted view of his ideal world, which is displayed in Eggmanland and Chemical Plant, as well as all of the bad futures. I also think he must have been deprived of fun as a child, which is why he builds casinos, and hellish theme parks.

While this is obviously non-canon, it honestly makes me really wanna see something in proper Sonic lore go into Eggman's origin. Maybe the IDW comic could do a miniseries with that concept in mind.

His motivation is that he's a madman who wants to rechristen the world in his image! That's all you really need lol.

I saw this awhile back. Honestly I found it kinda cringey and too real on some points.

We don't always need to know why a villain's a villain.
