Sonic Forces Speed Battle (iOS - Hardlight Studio)

Recommended Posts

Finally got Long Claw, I'm loving the beam of sunlight that dramatically shines down on her as the race starts! 😄 She seems a decent racer - her speed up / slow down drop bomb is really useful, right up until you get multiple Long Claws in the same race and everyone forgets whose is whose!

I definitely think they made the right decision to have her flying rather than running, it would have looked weird with her design.

Decided to actually play the game when I saw the message about the Longclaw event ending and immediately got Tails, Knuckles, and Jet alongside some money and red rings.

EDIT: Since then, I've unlocked Classic, Charmy, Omega, Silver, and Amy as either side things or as a result of the missions in Classic's case; Haven't played as the latter three just yet. Btw, stop me if you heard this, but Charmy, Tails, and Classic kinda suck. Jet is similarly a bit hard to use, but I've been getting more success compared to Classic's 1 to 6 and Tails fumbling to 2nd at best; Charmy seemed random, but I know I totally lost at least once.

Question: How do you focus on unlocking Long Claw over the other two movie Sonics? I'm getting tired of indirectly fulfilling objectives only to see them and the already unlocked Classic get points.

Also, it looks like the Deadly Three and Chaos 0 are locked behind a pay wall with Shadow and Metal.

Maybe it's because it's the only thing related to Forces that is good.

It's still pretty weird, though. I mean, Runners drew heavily from Lost World and neither of those words were ever included in the title.

Apologies, I didn't spot your edit until now!

For Long Claw, you can only get cards for her during specific events as she's a Special Character; this means she and the other specials are slower to unlock, but events for each of them do come around fairly frequently.

Metal Sonic, Chaos, the Zeti and Shadow are all Super Rare characters - cards for them are few and far between. As you progress however, you tend to win an increasing amount of cards, so ou don't need to pay to get them, if you're patient.

Regarding the different strengths of the characters - while some are arguably better than others, all are playable and capable of winning, and some get better as you progress. For example, characters with the power Lightning like Amy and Rouge seem underpowered to begin with as Lightning appears to be less useful than Fireball, Tornado and the like; when they reach higher levels however, Lightning becomes absolutely horrendous as you can spam three at a time in quick succession without having to aim them, and against targets behind you too (unlike fireball and tornado, which are useless if you're in first place).

Overall, it's a fun little game - due to facing live players, each race is a real challenge despite level, with enough random factors from other players to make each race unique and challenging.

Every three hours from what I've seen.

I'd be slightly less annoyed if Classic wasn't stealing what could easily be points for her.

They must be gamebreakers or something.

Also, gotta love how not just Zavok, but also Zazz and Zeena are effectively locked behind an attrition based pay wall.

That would explain the random zaps I started getting in one race.

Eh, I guess. Personally, the name being just Sonic Forces now isn't as random as I thought.

You're right about the challenge though, since taking your eyes away for a moment can cost you the race--oh, I'm sorry--BATTLE.

Nope

Metal Sonic , Chaos and Shadow are just characters people will pay out the ass to try and get. That's it.

On that same token, legit don't know why the zeti are there. I don't really see them played much on line.

I actually understand Zavok at least: It's the four recurring villains from Sonic Forces itself.

It's why Zazz and Zeena are thrown in that's the bigger issue.

Surprisingly not so much - some of their abilities are quite powerful (Shadow's Storm Cloud, Big's Lilytrap and Zazz's Star Trail) but they're not unbalanced.

Probably the nastiest ability is actually Spring Cream's Hedge Maze - as well as covering all lanes, including making one impossible to jump over either, it dazes you if you get hit by it, so that for a short time afterwards you slow down if you change lanes.

I must admit, for a random tie in mobile game, they seemed to actually put some effort in having it being quasi-related to the actual game, with each of your opponents being portrayed as Infinite illusions (that also explains away having multiple identical characters in the same race) which dissipate once you get to the Phantom Ruby.

The random extra characters though, not so much, though at this point, and especially with the movie tie-ins, they're just for laughs (and I have no idea why they put Sky Sanctuary in it, that just seems.... completely out of nowhere).

Well Runners got shut down, so this might as well fill in the void.

And yeah, the fact that it plays Mortar Canyon also makes it seem overly epic.

The Sonic fanbase: where that comment not merging still makes perfect sense.

I'm very sorry for that 🙁

The game will make you win a bunch of races and satisfy you until you get addicted, then it will treat you like trash and frustrate you like there's no tomorrow. I suggest to leave until it's too late, but it's your own choice really.

trash.jpg.dde6c8d69e5e5f9e6d906769bbea1926.jpg

First row:

1 - the game applied a different camera angle to make the race more confusing and obstruct my view in loops

2 and 3 - 2 races with a "cheater" who spammed tornado traps and controls became unresponsive so even with skills they were impossible to dodge

4 - same as 2 and 3 but 2 "cheaters", a Longclaw and an Amy... the whole race I was haunted by thunders and Longclaw's traps

Second row:

It's all from the same race, one of the most ridicolous races I've ever done in this game: the character was impossible to control (it only ignored and misread input) and the road was full of Big traps the whole race.

I said "cheaters" but they're not... the game punishes you when you get too many trophies, and when it wants you to lose it will put you into those matches. It's not about cheaters, it's a "balancing" feature of the game... you are stuck at the amount of trophies the game wants you to have, there's no skills involved. The game becomes more and more strict in forcing the outcome of a race on you with each new season/update because they collect data and adapt the game to block the new exploits the players will find to overcome the cheapness of this game, so far that it became nearly unplayable recently.

It would be if it was fair, it's not. Also I'm almost certain that you don't face live players, it's all a lie. Opponent will slow down to come near you and hit you, and they have several other unrealistic behaviors that an human player can't do. When necessary, every opponent can spam attacks infinitely, even outside of those "cheated" races from those screenshots.

It's really a suicidal ability. I occasionally use her, but often the game uses my Hedge Maze against myself by misreading my input and forcing me to hit myself.

I like the gameplay concept of this game, that's the reason why I'm still playing it, but Hardlight is trash. I wish there was a fanmade clone without the unfairness, even against bots only (not that you face real players in the original anyway).

Well I must've gotten "lucky" then cause this game kinda blew from the get-go.

Yeah, I didn't know what I was getting into and I've been getting third more than anything else, but man. I can't even say outright winning occasionally is ever satisfying, since I don't understand the correlation of how the rewards work and it seems to overly focus on stuff I already have.

I encounter the Zeti fairly often when I play, Zazz in particular can be a pain if you get behind him due to his star land mine move. The only characters that are less common are the special characters really, which makes sense because they're lower level.

I've played the game since it came out almost daily, mainly because it's an easy way to pass time for a few minutes while I'm on a break - I complete whatever the missions I've built up from the previous day are and open whatever longer chests I started to unlock before I left. I've played some with every character, but I like Amy's moves the most so I usually stick with her. I imagine it's probably frustrating coming in late in the game and having a backlog of characters that are either a time investment to get enough cards for or are only rotated so often. If you've played like I have though it's been pretty easy to unlock everything as they come up - especially because I rarely spend Red Star Rings on chests, usually saving them up until I can buy one of the big chests when they do their 50% of sales. Because of that, I usually have enough Red Star Rings on hand to easily spend buy the 5 Red Star Ring requirements to double my chances when a new character is added (I don't do that to get more cards after I've unlocked the character though, I just let myself get those slowly). I have yet to spend any actual money on the game, nor do I ever intend to. I love how many characters they've added, Zeti included, and it'd be rad if they keep adding them over time - the rest of the Deadly Six, Tikal, Sticks if they can swing it (it's pretty clear they intended to add Boom Sonic at one point and then were told not to), Infinite (he's probably barred too given how obvious a choice he would have been), any other modern characters they could convince Sega to let them use.

The balancing feature works both ways. If the matchmaking throws you into a lobby where you are outranked by the other contestants, then the penalty for losing is severely minimized and the reward for winning is almost doubled. Getting curb-stomped by someone who had 300-500 more reputation than you has almost no impact on your own reputation. even if you come in 4th. (However losing to someone with significantly less rep than yourself leads to massive losses).

The game only really punishes you when you lose matches that you have no business losing.

I don't get the unplayable chatter. Sure its got that Mario Kart vibe to it where you can get robbed at the last second via an item, but I've never had a problem winning at a decent clip. I made it up to the Elite tier without a problem.

I usually rank pretty high, about half the world chart.

Last season I was around 6.400 trophies and was getting closer to 6.500... it was the first time I had so many trophies, usually the best I could do ranged from 6.150 to 6.300. there were still about 3 or 4 days before the end of the season, I was sure that I would have reached 6.500... then... my game got cursed. For all the remaining days I have got cheated races like the ones in those screenshots... and only the last day I have been able to gain the lost trophies back. I never reached 6.500 though, I barely recovered the lost trophies and nothing more.

This is so fake, it's not skill based or anything... the game just manipulates the outcome of a race and if you are too high in the chart it will just stop you from winning in unfair ways. I also play this game since the beginning... I left for a few months (short after Jet was added, until Lunar Blaze) but then I returned and never stopped playing. It just happens all the times... occasionally you progress too much and the game "curses" you for a few days until you fall out from the world chart, then it will let you recover again, but in the meanwhile you have been stuck and the other "players" still gained trophies.

I don't know if this happens because I never paid or what, but it's just annoying. Anyway, ranking high in the chart probably plays a role in the game being more unfair with me; the more trophies you have, the more blatant the cheating against you will be.

To be fair, wouldn't the law of averages dictate that the higher you are on the rankings, the more likely you are to be put in a match with someone who is cheating?

Those guys who cheat constantly win and are very much more likely to be hanging out in the highest tiers. Therefore, legitimate players are more likely to run into them when they start reaching that upper echelon. The game doesn't "curse" you, it just matches you with people around your reputation level and the likelyhood of being matched with a cheater is higher once you reach that elite threshold. As is the likelyhood of getting matched with very strong and sometimes overleveled legitimate players.

I don't think the game manipulates races to keep you from advancing. I think there are certain ranges where you are just hella more likely to run into cheaters. I've also noticed that playing during certain times of day also greatly increases the odds of running into cheaters and grossly over-leveled players from other parts of the world. That's where losing streaks come from. Its hard to win when the other races have a higher footspeed, more attack opportunities and greater resistance from your atacks. The deck is just stacked against you in those races. Sometimes its just better to fight the urge for one more race to end on a good note, and cut your losses and come back in a few hours when the playing field is more level.

After I lose 300 trophies and I'm kicked out of the chart, I still get cheated races for a few days... no matter how low I fall, I still get them until the "curse" is gone, and as I said, it usually lasts a few days.

I don't think cheaters exist at all. The game manages most of the stuff server-side, and it would be incredibly hard if not impossible to cheat. Also it's not just "cheaters", sometimes it's the game itself that plays against you... bad camera angles, unresponsive controls*, lost connection**, and other stuff. I've even seen some fishy tricks such as, there is a line of tornado traps under one of those walls you are supposed to slide under; you see the lane without the tornado, you slide under it, when the wall covers your camera and you can't see, the game flips the trap and the safe lane is now at the opposite side, so you get damaged.

Also, those cheated traps only affect you, the other players don't get damaged by the spammed traps. They're not real cheaters, it's just a punishment to you.

And not all the "cheaters" have high rankings... often they have low rankings so when you arrive 4th, you lose 30+ trophies at once. Usually they are lower level than you too. And the pattern at which this happens is schematic, it's the same all the times... it really seems like a script is activated and then you are doomed.

Spoiler

*it's not my phone's fault. I activated the tool that let you see a small orb on the screen when you touch it, and I see that my screen captures my finger's movements perfectly, with unnoticeable lag and high precision (even during gameplay)... the game still often misreads them; and by misreads I don't mean lag, I mean you say left and it goes right, you drop an item and it jumps... often the "wrong" movements will move you into a trap or projectile as if the game is forcing you into it.

**I've played it at a friend's home where there is a way better connection than mine, and not only I had the same connection issues, they happend in the same way and at the same rate as they happend at my home, despite the different (better) connection. To be more precise, the connection problem logo appeared on screen and the game ran normal, but I was unable to collect items... it sounds more like an handicap imposed by the game than an actual problem (it was very frequent during the first Spring Cream event last year, now it still happens occasionally but it's very rare).

Well I can't speak to that. Never happened to me.

This I can speak to. There are without a doubt a collection of cheaters in this game.

Just yesterday I ran into a user named "Hacker" and his Shadow character took off like a rocket the second the match started. Like he was boosting with no aura. Wasn't even using the skating animation. By the time the other 3 of us made it to the first row of item boxes he was already well beyond our range. Using the minimap on the sidebar, he finished the level before any of us made it halfway.

Other cheating is much more subtle, but that was outright blatant.

Good players learn the blind spots in each map. There are sections on almost every map that can be abused by savvy vets. Loops and corkscrews being the most obvious. Its completely possible to take advantage of the game and screw over the poor souls behind you with something they have no way of dodging. Planting traps on steep hills or declines can also make them impossible to jump over, turning something that is easy to dodge, into a nightmare. The inclines and sharp turns messes with the hitboxes. I remember having quite a bit of salt before I figured that out. I felt like the game was missing my jump or dodge inputs - but in reality, the hitbox manipulation meant I was doomed whether I jumped or not. Tails' Tornado trap is a death sentence on a corkscrew.

The funny thing is, that its almost all Human players that take advantage of those tricks. AI bots don't really have that move in their playbook. They mostly stick to laying taps that are perfectly aligned with natural obstacles or item boxes. (It super easy to tell when your playing against an AI Rouge because of that lol).

I think the handful of AI players that populate some of the races get away with more. I've seen them run through some traps w/o a penalty.

I know about that, but what I'm talking about is different. You see the trap from below the wall, the far left lane is safe; when you slide under the wall, the safe lane was moved to the far right and the far left lane is now a hitbox: it flipped the trap when the wall was covering the trap and you couldn't see; this has nothing to do with skills, this is just the game cheating.

It happend to me a couple of times, and if I remember well it was always in one of the Green Hill tracks (can't remember what precisely).

A similar thing that occasionally happens (rare), is that you place a trap that usually spawns on all the lanes except yours, and it instead spawns mirrored (the safe lane is at the opposite side as it should be, and your lane has the trap) or even covers all the lanes completely (and when it happens on a loop you can't jump over it). It happend a few times with Spring Cream too, that I placed an hedge maze, and it was made of all grown up plants and they covered all the lanes (so, completely impossible to dodge), also it damaged only me and not the other players. You can be a good player as much as you want, but when the game does this to you, there's nothing you can do.

The only obvious cheat I've seen are players who can spam items. Like they get an item and then use it like 10 times in a row or something instead of the usual maximum of three.

I think a lot of the issues you're having are actually down to the game's one major weakness... connection issues. Any time one player has a connection problem, it seems to affect the entire game; many of the phenomenon you're describing (characters seemingly ignoring damage or going faster) occur when that happens. Characters can appear in places that they're actually not in 'reality', and if a player completely loses their connection, their character will become invincible and zoom at an incredible speed to the finish line. It can also occassionally cause the perspective shift error.

I do also wonder if you're misinterpreting some of the things happening; that line of continuous lightning strikes for example is completely possible in that location assuming the player is high enough to get three at a time and fires them immediately in time to get three more from the next item box. I remember myself on certain maps being able to spam a near continuous stream of lightning thanks to the close placement of item boxes onto whomever was unfortunate enough to be behind me; the same goes for Long Claw wind traps, Big Lilypads, etc.

I don't think there's any algorithm deliberately making you lose - it's just the chaotic nature of the game combined with the occasional connection issue, glitch and cheater. I've never had any significant problems or been 'cursed', and have enjoyed playing the game every day for years - if an algorithm were in place, it would strike everyone in a similar fashion, and I've had numerous streaks of continuous wins without any nefarious activity. Similarly, I can't see any evidence of false AI charactres that can't be explained by connectivity issues or the occasional cheater. It would take a hugely complex and expensive AI to monitor all the hundreds of thousands of gamers, determine which were winning, and have the sophistication to intervene during races in realtime in ways to harm the user; it would take a huge amount of resources to set that up for no logical business goal.

Okay, I am convinced i just encountered one of those cheaters yall mentioned.

So I was coming in third in one race as I think Silver and when the results screen said I came in fourth, I went what but just sighed in resignation. Played again using Omega and somehow managed to be coming in first at the end  with no one in sight. Only for the results to say a BabySinic player called TMDOM777 or something came in first with Mr being second. HAX! I call HaX!

Also, Charmy still sucks.

And the Phantom Ruby just crashed my game.

So Tikal just got confirmed. It's guaranteed she'll be one of my mains.

Now all we need is some confirmation that Sticks will be added granted the folks at Sega approve.
