Sonic Forces - Chemical Plant is back

Hard to be surprised by this when it's been hinted at since E3--Knuckles's dialogue during the avatar's GHZ and elements of  the chemical plant being directly incorporated into the level. On one hand, it's disappointing. This is the third time in the same decade we've seen levels like Green Hill and Chemical Plant, and it's tiring to see them continually shoved down our throats, regardless of what they do with them. On the other hand, something I think I can appreciate Forces for (assuming this is the intention) is, unlike Generations, it feels like they're trying to make sense of Sonic's world and actually thread different settings together in a way that's kind of choesive that the setting hasn't really had for a while. And I like how parts of the level just look really rusty like it's been sitting there for years.

Eh, I dunno. It's hard for me to be upset when I saw it coming months ago, even if it's stupid to recycle it yet again. I'm hoping we get to eventually launch up to the fleet that's hovering overhead though, that'd be pretty cool.

Fourth, if you count Lego Dimensions.

And I would be willing to chalk these two Zones being in both Mania and Forces as bad timing that neither party was aware of, except that we're also looking to get Sky Sanctuary in the latter, if Speed Battle is any indication. At least Egg Fleet hasn't really been used as a level since Heroes, but the hint from this year's anniversary video that a certain space station is also returning concerns me.

I don’t see the hint.

Well.

Maybe we'll get a cool fight with Chaos on Angel Island or something out of it...? That'd be disappointing, but I suppose it goes back to my previous point about trying to actually tie things together. I'm treating Forces more as a Generations redux than a follow up (there's at least appears to be some effort in the background details compared to everything just appearing in a white void), but I'm sure SEGA will screw that up in the narrative by directly referencing those events despite relegating the classic series to another dimension when they were originally the past. Oh well, bring it on, I guess.

Oh, and that hint... so... we're not getting the ARK back are we... damn.

How does this look ugly? I love how beautiful Chemical rehash I mean Plant looks. Shows how the effect of Eggman winning has done.

You also have to consider that Taxman and co. had their own list of zones that they wanted to remix for Mania before Iizuka/Sonic Team threw it out and essentially told them "Nah, we'd like you to remix these zones instead."

Green Hill and Chemical Plant being in both was likely another one of Sega's attempts to tie each game together.

Somebody confirmed Sky Sanctuary would not be in Forces proper.

It's pretty depressing seeing more returning stages. Wasn't happy about it being in Mania, not happy about it being here. Another year of rehash and nostalgia. I just hope the new outweighs the old, unlike Mania.Originality seems to have left Sonic.

Green Hill was a desert

Casino Night was a forest

What exactly is Chemical Plant supposed to be...? Just.. a different color scheme? The air ships in the background?

It's Chemical Plant in disrepair.

Dang, those screenshots look so nice! I’m excited about Chemical Plant returning! :D

And I thought I was the only one who was excited, let alone fine about Chemical Plant returning. I gotta say, the level does look nice, and I like the new Drill Wispon.

Considering they've removed the background buildings in favor of just a cloudy sky I almost wonder if the whole plant is flying.

Disrepair is Shadow Moses Island in Metal Gear Solid 4, with shit broken and falling apart, with somber music and a thick blizzard covering everything in a thick layer of snow. The place is empty and desolate save for the machines that have now come to roost, and rubble and debris are everywhere. The lights are out and you get a feeling that the world has moved on from this once pristine state of the art place.

Chemical Plant is just someone throwing dirt and dust all over and calling it a day.

Me saying this aside, meh to Chem Plant.

I’m totally fine with these returning levels. It’s not like they’re exactly the same as the Genesis and Generations versions. Yeah, the level looks very nice! With the dark cloudy sky and the flying airships, this level is giving off some Heroes vibes!

About the levels not being the same as the Genesis and Generations versions, exactly! I am also getting Heroes vibes with the Egg Fleet in the sky.

@Indigo Rush Industry?

Honestly with all the battleships in the background, Chemical Plant possibly is thriving under Eggman's control.

They might just be using the old "villian makes everything gray and gloomy" trope you'd see in Disney movies or something.

...it doesn't even really look like chemical plant, honestly. The yellow paths and blue liquid, sure, but the rest doesn't give off the same level feel at all.

Why did they do this, though? Even I'm baffled at their re-inclusion of this stage. I don't even recall it being particularly loved or anything before Generations came out anyway. And why are all the screenshots nicer looking than what we've seen of Casino Forest?
