Sonic Forces SPOILER Thread

Famitsu is the same company that gave Final Fantasy XIII, a near perfect score.

And most people agree that FFXIII is a hot, steaming pile of dried shit on a road in the summer heat, myself included. Don't take their word on anything.

It wouldn't be the first time, remember when Play Magazine gave Sonic 06 a 9 out of 10?

Still, I think its more likely just Famitsu being generous, as they tend to be.

(Just for reference though, 32 out of 40 is the same as everyone giving Sonic Mania 8 out of 10, hardly hating the game).

Not hating, just promoting games "Made in Japan" to the Japanese gaming world in order to increase the sales.

That's pretty lame. It's not like the country of origin has anything to do with quality. Both good and shit games can come from anywhere.

It was a dedicated market after all. Why not ? Just increasing the sales turnover where it is possible.

How is that Charmy gets roasted but Tails doesn't get scolded? Also, does anyone think that Eggman should have stopped talking when he said he decided to learn from his mistakes?

It's nothing to do with games having fundamental quality based on origin, and everything to do with "does this particular website have a bias that believes that".

To which the answer is honestly that Fire and Ice scored better, so probably not.

The bizarreness of this is the fact that 4 people reviewing a game to accumulate one overall score makes you feel this should be more realiable.

If anything that sounds like it'd confuse things a bit, though I say that having no idea how exactly their review writing process goes...

This game frustrates me a lot cuz there's actually a decent number of ideas in there that I like. For example, that beating the game changes the title screen, including the music shifting to an instrumental of The Light of Hope, is freaking adorable.

Something else I noticed about a few stages is that they actually have some interesting ideas for level-specific gimmicks, but they're just not used the way they would be in ideal Sonic design. What I mean is, look at Network Terminal (Modern's Chemical Plant stage). Once you're inside the plant, you're quickly introduced to mega mack pouring down, which pushes you down, and naturally it acts as a hazard later on in the level. But on top of that, it also pushes those platforms around like a watermill. It's a cute little idea...but the thing is, it's played like a Mario level. What I mean is, you absolutely need to learn how this mechanic to get through the stage. Typically with Sonic gimmicks, you need to master stuff like this to reach higher paths, but can still make your way to the end just by generally heading to the goal, or the level gimmicks that you are required to use are really simple (think, um...the bouncy liquid in Chemical Plant Act 2 in Mania seems like a fitting comparison). It's not that I'm against design like that in a Sonic game, but I think it'd fit better as extra challenges than a main level.

I know this is more a result of the game being more linear more than anything, but it's something that stood out to me as someone who thinks a lot about game design and how Sonic handles it versus Mario and other platformers, lol.

Tails has to live with Charmy now being more competent than him. I don't think he could get a worse punishment.

That's sad. And what about Eggman? Do you think he should have kept his mouth shut?

Nah he's got an ego and would buy into himself. If anything he was too reserved in this game.

What do you mean by that?

His ego shoulda been all over the place once he achieved victory. With a goofy lookin Eggman world and rules. But instead we got a dull military bland Eggman rule.

Well, the game is called Sonic Forces. And Eggman is not messing around this time.

"Most people" was upon initial reaction on the game. Reviews aside, it's gotten better as the sequels went along but sadly, fans assumed it was the same thing so that's why they started falling out.

It's an overrhated game, which is common in the franchise.

True but while I vastly prefer a competent Eggman, he still needs his style, flair, and antics to make it memorable his rule.

Eggman is, by his very nature, theatrical and over-the-top.

Asking Eggman to not be colorful and funny is like asking the Joker not to be colorful and funny. He can be a serious villain who "doesn't mess around" while still emphasizing his ego and his hilarious eccentricities. A world conquered by Eggman should a world of glitz and glam, an egocentric testament to himself filled with statues and imagery in his own likeness. What we instead got was a boring militarized version of Eggman; Grey with a side of more grey.

This isn't Eggman; It's SatAM Robotnik wearing an Eggman suit. And I find it boring.

Agree, remember plans of Eggman to build Robotnikland, heck he built Eggmanland on the last Gaia temple. Or Sonic CD having like tons of details what would actually happen with the conquered places. This just seems like he just conquered the territories, but actually it´s like nothing had happened. That´s totally boring. And Eggman being almost no time on-screen for roughly half of the story is just... seriously, Sonic Team ?

It was a game filled with linear hallway-like maps. You just walked forward for almost the entire game.

...which is not unlike Forces, honestly. Okay, Famitsu's love of the game is starting to make more sense.

You  can still be ruthless.  eggman being silly in every game is a boring character. Yes he likes his name on things but damn if he didn't destroy things to get there. I enjoy a funny at times but my end goal is to destroy sonicand rule the world with my machines aka the eggman song

Not the entire game but some spots were that did not take away from what was a amazing looking game and controls and combat were good and fluid

Ruthless and funny aren't opposites. They can coexist. You can be both simultaneously.

It doesn't make sense for Eggman's empire to be a boring drab sand-filled trash heap without any of the bright colorful aesthetics that are usually associated with him. Eggman should be changing the world. The act of conquering the world shouldn't change Eggman.

Well he did make the forest into a casino. That seems like something kind of glitzy.

There are many silly things going on in Forces too:
Like Metropolis being a clean power source. All around it doesn´t seem as anything Eggman would ever build. Too clean = too boring in Eggman´s name.

Eggman Empire Fortress. Like who the fuck figured out that name ? Iron Fortress seems ok to me, Eggman Empire Fortress is shit.

Casino Forest looks as if there even wasn´t Eggman.

Green Hill... oh sand, great... the rest you know.

I mean, kinda. But Sonic's world is already filled with similar casinos that aren't owned by Eggman, and this one still didn't scream "Eggman" visually. There wasn't really much in the way of Eggman imagery associated with it.

It just felt like another Casino Night or Casino Park.
