To be fair, Tee Lopes' compositions for Mania are owned by SEGA and they can do with them as they wish.

...Unless Fumie Kumatani got credited in the booklet as the original composer of Rhythm and Balance or Supporting Me, skipping over Tee Lopes would be weird in that case.

Your right, Fumie doesn't get any credit either. Still a shame.

Agreed, more than anything it's just respectful, though I wonder if it's just legally "safer" to not mention people who weren't involved rather than risk them being like "Hey I don't want my name on this thing I had nothing to do with" lol.

Do we know where Mariko Nanba and Fumie Kumatani are working right now? It's criminal that they never got a chance to be sound directors while they were at SEGA.

Kumatani left SEGA in 2008. She worked as event music composer in Sonic Colours though, maybe as external composer.

I still think it was a great loss for SEGA and Sonic, she has a really unique style and since Colours it seems she hasn't worked on anything else after that.

Got a quick question for anyone who owns the physical release for the OST and Vocal album and I didn't see an answer in here:

I noticed the digital listing on Amazon for the main soundtrack has all the tracks that are featured on the vocal album. Is this true only for the digital version or does the physical OST contain everything from the vocal album as well rendering the latter redundant?

I was thinking of grabbing this digitally some time, along with other Sonic albums. Even if I don't really care about the game, I liked most of what I heard of the music.

I don't own the physical release but this photo of the back shows that it contains all the vocal tracks like the digital version so yeah, I think the vocal tracks CD was just produced as a "for people who only want those" edition and/or a collector's item.

I really enjoy all of Classic Sonic's theme (especially Green Hill and Casino Forest) as well as all of the Avatar's vocal tracks. (Bar Imperial Tower. Bleh...)

Oh cool! The physical version of the OST is coming over to the west. I would be happy about this as the music was the one aspect I liked about Forces, but I already bought it on iTunes, so no point in me getting it a second time. It’s still pretty neat regardless.

I guess the sticker would be cool but no reason to double dip on the ost. It was cheap to get it here. Though i wonder if they would do rereleases on older things like SA

This failed as a status so I'll post here instead.

Okay, so it's been a few months now since Forces and I've pretty much listened to the soundtrack about 90 times over. I think I can give my final thoughts on it...

Overall, the soundtrack is decent. it wasn't setting out to be anything similar like the past games (or trying to blatantly copy another franchise's style in music *cough* LostWorld *cough*) but It's electronica style is a tone I don't really hear all that much in a sonic game ('cept Riders).

I'll break it down into it's 6 categories.

Spoiler

~Classic: Truly the worst of the 6 sets. Oh boy where do I begin? the fact that this particular section wasn't even thought out correctly? the fact that they used all sorts of wrong instrumentation when creating a Genesis style track? the fact that most are just hard to listen to and cements more of the fact that Classic Sonic was just a last minute add-on? I would love to see what a fan who understands Genesis sound-fonts (Or Tee Lopes) could do to actually make these tracks sound decent but as they are, god damn what a fumble.

Favorite tracks: Green/Sand Hill, Casino Forest, Vs. Eggman

~Modern: You can tell where half of this soundtrack's thought went into. while not all of Modern's tracks are hits stuff like Lost Valley, Egg Gate and Sunset Heights are great to listen to and do invoke that sense of speed while trying to work with this musical style. Too bad the levels don't support the tracks for more then a minute...

Favorite tracks: Egg Gate, Sunset Heights, Lost Valley, Mortar Canyon.

~Custom Character: "Sonic R" was written all over these for inspiration that's for sure and probably set the whole dance electronica tone. Each track is pretty fun and would fit great in some 90's racing game. lyrics are cheesy AF but guess that was the point, good tracks all around...

Favorite Tracks: Capital City, Aqua Road, Imperial Tower

~Episode Shadow: Maybe I'm biased but these are probably my upmost favorites besides the ones I'm listing, perhaps they are just remixed SA2 and SHTH tunes. Love both the in-game originals and the soundtrack remasters (yes there is a difference go listen). makes it more of a literal shame Shadow didn't have more then just 3 tracks and a menu theme.

Favorite tracks: All.

~Bosses: So You get a who's who of Sonic's past villains and what do you do? fumble it. Zavok and Metal are just heavy dance remixes of their old boss themes so theirs nothing really special in those, Shadow and Chaos have...Oh yeah there is none!, and Edgelord has 3 boss themes 2 of them being variations of his main theme while the 3rd is just generic boss theme #27. Eggman gets 2 boss battles but 1 is classic themed which I already lumped in the section above and the other is boring and unmemorable until the final boss in which you realize...this is fucking sonic colors all over again right down to the music sounding eerily similar. about as just as much thought put into it as Classic's tracks.

Favorite tracks: Vs. Metal Sonic, Final Boss/Nega Wisp Machine 2.0

~Cutscenes: Not much to tell on these, tracks that fit the situation but you won't find yourself listening to these outside of the game. it was nice that they always include them in the soundtracks, I hate incomplete soundtracks even when cutscene tracks are missing.

Favorite tracks: Umm?...

~(Bonus) Main themes: The 2 cheesiest songs in the whole fucking game gotta be these 2. Fistbump for it's meme like quality and Infinite for its' edgelord metal. it is a shame though, because I would like an instrumental of Infinite's theme the background track is oddly very good but the lyrics just ruin it and make it laughable. my brother and me still quote the dumb lyrics from time to time.

I Have no favorite in this but at least Fistbump has an instrumental.

Just pointing this out in case you didn't notice but... you listened 90 times and didn't clock that the 3rd Infinite boss theme is distinctly an orchestral re-creation of his theme song?

I agree with your thoughts on Zavok and Metal's themes though.  They're both... fine, they aren't bad, but they aren't interesting remixes either, and honestly they feel out of place amidst a soundtrack of nearly-entirely original music with very distinct theming. They also feel inconsistent with the fact that Eggman gets a new boss theme despite both phases of his battle being direct nostalgia throwbacks.

@JezMM - I did kind of notice it but I guess you have to be invested to actually listen to it to care, which I'm not. it was just a generic boss theme to me.

Just chiming in to say that I didn't notice that the final Infinite battle theme was actually a remix of his main theme too. It's just so subtle, bland and different to the regular version that it's really hard to tell. It doesn't stand out at all.
