I’ve brought up in the past this actually. Considering how a lot of countries, America especially, are built to prioritize corporations first and foremost still, I just assume Disney has just so much power and a butt load of connections, it can get away with just about anything at this point. If it wanted to buy 80% of its competition, it could. Monopoly really doesn’t mean much nowadays to companies like them

Most people don't watch a ton of movies aside from Superhero stuff now so they only understand this on that level. It's legitimately a bigger story to most than the monopoly forming around it.

Re: entertainment. Each piece of intellectual property is its own monopoly. So there's not really any anti-monopoly legislation that's valid for that element. There is copyright expiration, though a lot of legal books make jokes about how copyright protection lasts as long as Disney wants. Indeed, it's only in recent years politicians went "okay enough is enough" and stopped letting Disney continue to extend copyright protection.

Re: the media itself. Similar problem as entertainment. Each channel is its own brand. Never mind that so long as quality does not suffer too much, the anti-trust argument is not as strong.

There are concerns about freedom of the press being impacted, but research shows most people don't tune into news networks to be informed. Plus in today's age, it's so easy to start up an indie outlet that it's harder to cry "monopoly!"

You can, quite possibly, start up your own news channel on Youtube and gain millions of followers. You probably can't start up your own oil, steel, or car company.

Disney have wanted their hands in the Alien pie for a while. They got the rights to have a scene in 'The Great Movie Ride' at Hollywood Studios and wanted to make an Alien experience in Magic Kingdom, which sadly fell through. We got a cool attraction that was Alien like but not. Sadly it closed and was replaced by a shit Stitch vetsion which has now also closed. Maybe they can finally get their Alien ride XD

Not sure how to feel about them touching Night at the Museum. The trilogy had perfect casting. And it just isn't going to be the same without Robin Williams playing Teddy Roosevelt. The third film felt like such perfect closure to Robin's acting and the series as a whole too.

There's nothing the everyman can really do about it. It's frustrating that the merger was essentially cheered on instead of being denounced by the public, but I feel it would have gone through either way. 

 

If you, like me, are feeling pretty bad about the future of big budget cinema, I suggest supporting indie creators and smaller studios.

Has anyone touched upon how this will affect streaming platforms? Disney majority owns Hulu and is now launching Disney+, so between these two they will squeeze Netflix to death. After they grab their IPs back from Netflix, I give it two years before Netflix starts bleeding cash. Remember how popular the Marvel series were on Netflix? I don’t think original content can compete with the likes that, or of Star Wars tv.

Disney doesn’t need to pay anyone to license stuff like Simpsons or Alien and it’s going to destroy the competition.

So apparently a whistle blower, a former Disney accountant, states that Disney inflated its revenue by billions. So remember when Captain Marvel supposedly earned $1 Billion at the box office? Much of that is from revenue related to their parks and resorts, using that money to buy their own tickets. Could also explain much of their "success" for their live action remakes as well. And as an added negative bonus for Disney, their stocks nosedived as a result of this story getting too.
