I wonder why they came to this decision.

My guess would be Tranformed didn't do as well as they hoped and they decided to wait a while and then opted to rebrand it rather than trying a third game. I know users here have said Tranformed did well, but the turn around time between the first two games was two years, if Transformed had done well enough it doesn't make sense to not have a new entry for the six years since Transformed.

It's just the lack of other SEGA IPs that's going to be really disappointing and kill a lot of the charm it had. I wonder why they came to this decision.

Because Sonic is the only thing that sells. At least here in the west. People would rather buy a crappy Sonic game than a decent Sega game.

Exactly, it's our love for Sonic that moves us. And this title could actually be really good if made by Sumo, but... no, who cares, it has Sonic's shitty friends in it. I understand taste and preferences though.

I'm gonna replay Mario Kart 8 to contain my hype.

Uncle Kaz says otherwise.

http://www.sonicretro.org/2013/05/all-stars-racing-transformed-moves-1-36-million-copies/

All Stars Racing Transformed moved 1.36 million copies in roughly 6-7 months, indicating it may have been the most successful non-Olympics Sonic spin-off released since SEGA went third-party.

Do you know why they are so harsh on them? Because most of them are just hype material. Every single time they have to create on of those action furry characters to get the attention of the fans. Same also with Tangle the lemur. She was just created to attract the fans not expand the universe.

Sure most of the side characters of other Sega Ips like Reala, Aika or Pudding, oh, heck, even main characters like Billy Hatcher, Ristar and Toejam and Earl are not as big and beloved as Sonic friends, but at least their serve more of a purpose for them games and are more just the new hip trend.

It was Sega's best selling and best rated game the year it came out.

It was sold so well that it got re-released multiple times on specialist PC systems.

It was sold so well that it even got a dodgy mobile port.

And it was sold so well that [NDA Censor not related to this current rumour].

It sounds like they've made a sequence of Zones, both new and old, and not only their picks didn't made it in, but said sequence was re-arranged.

Considering he says they and Sega went back and forth pitching levels, I doubt it was a case of big bad Sega saying "no you can't do what you want".

Anyway I didn't really care much about the Sega All-Stars games or most non-Sonic Sega IPs so I won't be terribly bothered if they drop that stuff, but if they are going with a Sonic-only racing game, I do hope they take advantage of what Sonic offers and don't just make Mario Kart but Sonic.

Great. Why hasn't there been a follow up for six years?

What makes you think one wasn't pitched?

I'm not saying one wasn't, just that it makes no sense why one wasn't green lit if it did that well.

Sumo's been doing work for Sony, Deep Silver, Disney, and Microsoft. They were likely just fully booked. That, and perhaps they just like... wanted to do other things?

That, and what Hogfather said.

Not with these words, but yes, I do believe it went that way. Most especially if those Sonic 3 levels were on Christian's pitch.

That makes more sense. It doesn't explain why Sega would change a working equation, but fair enough.

Also I'd like to address the issue of Sega Characters for a second.

Odds are... you won't see Sega Characters in a cross party game for a long time, at least not old ones.

See, Sega has a big problem when it comes to it's old stock of characters, that being, when they originally made games like Golden Axe, Streets of Rage and even as far upto and including Space Channel 5, they had a policy where if someone made a character, they had final say on that character and it's world.... FOREVER.

Meaning, say I wanna make ASRT 2. and I want to include the following IP's, Golden Axe, Space Channel 5, Sonic.

Sonic... is pretty much easy. Just get Sonic Team to OK it.

Space Channel 5 becomes more tricky... whilst getting hold of the person who has final say is 'easy'... getting approval is not... Apparently, they're pretty controlling and even the tiniest of changes is a big no no.

Golden Axe... well... this is even more interesting. Apparently, the person who has final say doesn't really care, they will ok anything.... but finding them isn't that easy, it turns out that they're a bit of a recluse and now live in a very remote part of a random forest... So yeah you have to track them down with a woodsman and say 'can we use Gillius?'

Now, this final say isn't just limited to characters, it's also the world... there is an interview somewhere on youtube in which S0L mentions how for the Panzer Dragoon stage, they had it all ready and working, but it didn't get approval because some white rocks, didn't have black spots on them which was apparently a trademark of the world according to the man who had final say... despite nobody every commenting on this previously.

Then consider if you have multiple characters from series...

These are all big headaches.

The same reasons we haven't had a new Sonic Adventure, Colors, Generations or Heroes. Because Sega always drops their ideas for new once.

What the heck? You're exagerating just for the sake of explaining it isn't always as easy and smooth as we think, right? OMG if the dude that created Golden Axe actually lives in a forest.

What I don't get is why this is a prohibitive issue now, when it wasn't for All Stars Racing, or All Stars Racing Transformed, or Project X Zone, or Project X Zone 2, or Tennis, or... etc.

Like I get style guides and restrictions and all that exists, and I recall the Panzer story from S0L vividly, but for it to suddenly be prohibitive of the entire project strikes me as odd.

That's all interesting, I was not aware of that policy.

Because people just want to play as Sonic's friends. That's why! No other reason. After all Sonic is Sega.

have you considered that it was a pain in the ass and they don't want to do it again?

If it is a Sonic only kart racer, I don't get the hate. I myself have never been too much into ASR simply because because I was never into SEGA's other franchises.
If the gameplay is like that, but with Sonic characters, it'll be something I'm extremely familiar with and most likely be a game I'd really WANT to play. I'd be fine if that's what they announced at SXSW.

I mean yeah, I suppose - but if they did it 3 times over I don't really get the sudden cold feet, I guess.

It may shock you to learn some people here like more than just Sonic, then.
