3. Only major disappointment is Classic mode AGAIN have fixed opponents, which completely ruins the repeatability.

This is the first time Smash has had fixed Classic opponents since the original N64 version.  Plus we're currently at 73 characters - if every character has a unique playlist of fights to go through, that's a pretty significant amount of content to perform the basic act of unlocking all the character trophies.

Also, anyone hoping for more stages, take note that the number Sakurai gave - 103 stages - matches the amount on the revealed stage select screen.  I really hope this is a trick though, since I too wanted a new stage for some franchises, and that big empty space in the bottom corner of the stage select screen is mighty annoying design.

Only 2 songs confirmed for Final Fantasy is a real bummer though.  I don't even care about the franchise particularly, but it just really hampers Midgar's atmosphere as a stage and feels so bizarre alongside the meaty playlists literally every single other franchise has.

Kind of.

Spoiler

The mode here is called "Spirits." Smash 5 also kind of has a recurring theme of characters being "killed" by the hands of the villains in the CGI trailers.

My theory is that you unlock characters by bringing them back from the "Dead" in this mode.

OK, if a second Konami representative shows up with an Echo Fighter right off the bat - with Knuckles taking the role of Sonic's Assist Trophy - Shadow has got to be in. I'd be happy with that, even if it would be more awesome to see Eggman enter the growing rogues gallery of goofy villains.

And speaking of which; I'm happy for you King K Rool fans out there. That Dedede bait was cheeky, but I knew the real deal would show up. Sakurai's not that Krool, right?

I also loved the Simon Belmont trailer with Luigi. It may even be my favourite so far in the series, despite my lack of familiarity with Castlevania. Fantastic direct all around.

That said, I am still disappointed that Sonic has essentially two Green Hills as his stages. It's great that he has two, don't get me wrong, but I so wish they had chosen Lost World's Casino Night when making the Wii U version. There's little chance now, but more than anything, I would love Studiopolis or Mirage Saloon to be added. I do hope that he at least has some new tracks/remixes from games like Generations and Mania. Not that the likes of Big Arm or Studiopolis would even fit the sunny Green Hills...

That's the point of Echo Fighters though, they don't have the literal exact same moves. They get different moves but reuse assets of the normal fighters. Some of Shadow's attacks (like Chaos Spear and such) would be original, while others like Spindashing, Homing Attack, Super Sonic/Shadow would be the same. He has a few unique moves but a ton of his moves are also from Sonic.

Not really... Daisy, Richter, Lucina, Dark Pit and Dark Samus all have the exact same moves as another character, barring Final Smashes in some cases. Chrom is unique in that all but one of his moves are Roy's (his up special is Ike's, sort of. Different startup). Their only real differences to the characters they're based on are idle poses, taunts and voices. Even jabs, tilts, aerials and smash attacks appear to be the same. Semi-Clones are the ones with different moves (Smash 4 Roy is very different from Marth, Lucas has different properties to his Specials and almost completely original other moves, Dr. Mario has Mario Tornado and a new Dair, etc.)

If Shadow were an Echo, he'd probably not get any new special moves, except possibly a new up special (which would just copy Mewtwo). Which I'd be fine with since he would playable at all.

Yeah, I didn't realize it for a little while, but, it's back...

stage_img93.jpg

Seems incredibly pointless with Green Hill Zone already in the game, and it drastically decreases the chances of getting another Sonic stage, but, umm, at least the new lighting makes the windmill look a lot nicer, I guess?

I mean, that's what happens when the Sonic series insists on having it's first stage be Green Hill clones all the time. If the first stage from Lost World was something else, it'd be something else but nope.

I'm grateful Smash Wii U didn't happen at around the time Forces was a thing. Then it'd be Green Hill and Green Hill with a bit of Sand in the background.

Nintendo respects the Sonic Advance series more than Sega and their fans do.

Knuckles does the punch combo from Sonic Advance, it's copied with attention to little details, it even has the exact same timing.

I wish the Advance series and Sonic Battle were taken in consideration when Sonic was made into a Smash fighter, back during the Brawl days... Smash Sonic is so awkward. This makes me wish Knuckles was an actual fighter instead of an assist, it just looks better... except for the Homing Attack, he never had it outside of some spin-offs such as Sonic Dash where everyone had it.

Speaking of Knuckles, they could easily make him an echo fighter for Sonic. I mean, we already see him performing the homing attack. Give him Sonic's moveset, change the animations to fit Knuckles and there you go, a Sonic Echo Fighter.

But in truth, that's just my inner Knuckles fanboy speaking again.

if sonic gets an echo, it'll probably be metal sonic or shadow

i'd rather have shadow as a unique character, though

Smash Sonic wouldn't bee soo awkward if he still had the Down Smash from Brawl from Sonic the Fighters.

Knuckles and literally everyone had the homing attack in Heroes (not while playing), Shadow, and both Rivals games.

You guys have no idea how thrilled I am that this doofus is in Smash. Simon actually getting in was already more than I could've asked for, but Richter is my favorite Belmont, and Rondo of Blood was the first Classic-Vania that I managed to beat, so this like a dream come true. What's more is that none of the leaks floating around actually predicted him, so he managed to stay a complete surprise.

And as one of the five or six people who actually likes Chrom, and was disappointed that he didn't make the cut last time around, I'm glad to see him finally get his chance. I'm sure I'll be playing both of them when the game comes out. I don't have as much personal love for K. Rool, but I'm happy for his fans too, and he looks to be very well-realized as a fighter.

What's left? What more could they possibly add? The game could've launched with the E3 roster and I'd have been satisfied.

You say that as a joke, but Forces!Green Hill could've actually made for a more interesting version of the regular stage. Imagine that as a hazard, a sandstorm could blow through the stage, covering it in sand, and then instead of the random destroying platforms, the hazard was actually the sandworms from Forces!Green Hill that would jump out of the ground (as indicated by a shadow) and try to grab any players standing there.

You mean like in Desert Ruins, the second stage in Lost World? Yeah sure.

Or they could have just used Desert Ruins.

Green Hill with a bit of sand didn't even have those sand level gimmicks like Desert Ruins did. It was all in the background. Even those blue worms were ripped right from Lost World.

I'm SO glad to finally see Metroid get actual new reps after all these years! Ridley and Dark Samus have been on my wishlist since the days of Brawl Dojo!

Now give me a playable Eggman and I'll be golden! :D

So since bosses are returning, we better get Sephiroth and Metal Gear Rex/Ray. Imma scream “missed potential” for the end of time if they aren’t bosses.

So I decided to look over the stage lists for each game and list the ones that are currently missing from Ultimate. (As well as hazard a guess as to why they may not be included.) There are a total of 16 (2 from 64, 4 from Melee, 3 from Brawl, 2 from 3DS, and 5 from Wii U):

Planet Zebes (Possibly redundant because Brinstar.)
Sector Z (Sakurai said in a Smash 4 DLC interview that he didn't pick this one as stage DLC because it was already in the game as Corneria, despite also noting the size difference.)
Mute City
Icicle Mountain
Poke Floats
Flat Zone (Redundant because X.)
Rumble Falls (Between the immediate dropping of this one and Icicle Mountain plus the lack of any vertical-scrolling stages from Smash 4 onward, it might just not be a type of stage Sakurai has interest in developing anymore.)
Flat Zone 2 (Same reason as the original.)
PictoChat (Possibly made redundant by 2.)
Rainbow Road
Pac-Maze (Might have issues adapting gimmick.)
Woolly World
Jungle Hijinxs
Pyrosphere (Ridley was the gimmick and he's playable, so...)
Orbital Gate Assault
Miiverse (Pointless because service shut down.)

(There's also the Melee version of Mushroom Kingdom, but it's very similar to the N64 stage as far as its look and name go, so I didn't count it.)

It's a pretty interesting selection. We'll see if any of these can make it into Ultimate by launch day or as possible future DLC.

A little experiment I made regarding sprites and the two known costumes for Simon and Richter:

image.png.014f62136f9f5505688bf50fee1b97b4.png

The ones on the left are from fan projects (Simon's Destiny [DOOM Mod] & SotN Hacked) while the ones on the right are from the original PSX graphics (Chronicles and SotN).

For Simon's outfits, the default is indeed his classic garb from the NES game and Chronicles' Original mode/X68K version.  The revealed alternate costume is from Super Castlevania IV.  For Richter, the default is his appearances in RoB/SotN/PoR/HD, while the alternate is actually a development gag for the 32X project that morphed into both RoB and SotN, often dubbed "The Rival," "Harker Belmont," or "Hans Belmont," even though his sprite was already modified from Richter's to begin with, same with Fake Trevor's.

Well so long as we're talking Sonic characters again I might as well get my cliff notes in. Shadow's fine as an Echo, I still kinda want Tails and although I wouldn't complain about playable Eggman, I still think he's much better suited to being a boss character than anything else. If we got even just two out of the three I'd be stoked, but frankly I'm not getting my hopes up.

Right, back to non-Sonic stuff. I'm not bitter that Dark Samus is an Echo, hell, I expected it - I was just hoping to see how her scattershot would play out in Smash is all. Kinda puzzled by the lack of a Hunter considering they have both a stage and an assist. but tbh I'm more puzzled that they somehow still haven't gotten around to Spring Man yet. I always thought that would've been the obvious pick.
