Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - DADDY SAKURAI'S WILD RIDE HAS CONCLUDED

I’m definitely ok with not every single stage coming back. I wasn’t expecting that for a moment, and am incredibly grateful for all of the stages that we are getting back already. Of course, there are already people complaining about this on other sites on the internet, because, you know, that’s how it goes with Super Smash Bros. There are already over 80 stages confirmed, with more coming, so if you take a step back and really look at everything that’s already there, it’s insane. I mean, sure, I’d love more stages, and bringing back every stage would definitely be welcome, but, people really need to control their expectations sometimes. Not here on this forum, but Smash fans in general; everyone’s been pretty chill here for the most part, which is why I keep coming back to this topic for Smash updates and discussion.

As for Sonic representation, I’ve accepted that Green Hill Zone may be the only stage for the series, and, I’m actually ok with that, if that does end up being the case. Sure, I, along with most other Sonic fans, have maybe seen a bit too much of Green Hill in recent years, but, it’s without a doubt the most iconic location in the series, and if guest series are, in fact, getting one stage each, then I completely understand why they would choose Green Hill Zone as the stage to represent Sonic. Plus, I personally like it a lot more than the Windy Hill stage, at least aesthetically. I’d absolutely love to see another stage that well-represents the series like Casino Night, Studiopolis, or even something like the Egg Carrier, but, I’m keeping my expectations in check here.

Honestly, I agree with you. They already accomplished the huge jaw drop with Ridley being playable. While I never personally made a big deal about Ridley needing to be playable, I sure am happy he is in Ultimate. It actually seems a lot of the fan requests for characters actually made it in to this. Though stages are the last thing I generally worry about. I just want them to make the stages fun to play on and are at least aesthetically pleasing. So I do share you sentiment with it really not hurting that Sonic may only keep Green Hill Zone as a stage. Though it would be neat to get more, granted that it's a consideration.

The project plan being finished in 2015 means that the final roster was probably decided around then too. You could take that as evidence that fighters from 2016 and onward aren't on the cards, but you never really know. Roy, for example, was debuted in Melee before he appeared in Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade. He's the exception rather than the rule, but depending on how much the devs thought ahead, we could still see characters from more recent games.

Depending on how technically you look at it, so was Greninja - he was added to the game long before X and Y, to the point that Saukurai only had concept art to work off of at the time. Yeah, I know this is over a week late but I felt it interesting to note Roy wasn't alone in this regard.

Back on the subject of stages, it's kind of hard to be disappointed about not getting everything because honestly, stage design in Smash has had a really conflicted and controversial history and it only makes sense that some if not many of them are cut completely rather than brought back for completionist's or nostaliga's sake. My only major gripe so far is lack of Pac Maze (seriously does anyone even play Pac Land?), but given that its gimmick was built around the way 3DSs play with each other I also understand they can't exactly just bring it back verbatim. On the other hand, I'm pretty pleased that Saffron City's finally back, and Unova Pokemon League / Fourside are somewhat guilty pleasures of mine too.

I do.  I don't see what everyone's problem with it is, since Mushroomy Kingdom has the same problems it has and it is considered "better".

"Smash is Special" Part 2 has been released and translated.

https://sourcegaming.info/2018/06/28/smash-is-special-part-2-sakurais-famitsu-column-vol-558/

Not a whole lot of new information here, but definitely still worth reading. Sakurai really emphasizes how difficult it was to get every fighter back, almost as if he's saying "Will you guys ever be satisfied? I mean, come on!"

Honestly I know Windy Hill is kind of a dud stage since it's literally "Green Hill in the sky" but I still hope it's back if Sonic doesn't get a new stage, it's better than nothing and at least lacks GHZ's walk-offs.  The gimmick of having a big smoothly shaped area for speedy characters to enjoy is also improved on Windy Hill.  Whether it's on the Smash or the SEGA side that is causing this lack of passion towards the series, it kinda sucks that Sonic's only had two stages across four games.  Mega Man also deserves a new stage - Pac-Man I'm less precious about since he did get two across Smash 4.

Granted, returning stages only for certain franchises is always easier to stomach when there's at least new music to enjoy on them.  I anticipate that we will at least get new "Original" tracks for every franchise, and if remixes aren't a thing, I hope they don't limit themselves to just throwing in like, two tracks exclusively from games that came out between 4 and Ultimate.  Throw in a few extra favourites (like Sonic did by finally including City Escape in Smash 4), or go further afield with bonus tracks from soundtrack CDs etc (Brawl had obscure music from Pikmin adverts around the world for goodness sake, that was neat!).

People don't like the way it looks...

But onto legit problems, it's very cluttered, you can't wall jump, and the ledges can't be grabbed. The Mario Bros. stage you're referring to does Not have those problems.

Not to mention not only is it an autoscroller with walk-off ledges, but one that scrolls so damn fast that fighting conventionally is basically impossible past a certain point. It's more a struggle for survival than it is an arena for fighting, and with inconsistent collision in places and the aformentioned non-grabbable ledges you can't always do even that consistently.

On a more personal note I just feel the Pac Maze is more iconic to the character as a whole and I'm super bitter that it never made it to the HD version.

Since I've been curious about this and could never hear it in any of the previous Smash videos from E3, I finally found a video where you can hear Sonic's victory theme. I don't think this had been confirmed yet; forgive me if it already has.

Spoiler

It's just the same Sonic 2006 level clear music that's been used for the previous Smash games. I was kind of expecting this, but, I'm still a little disappointed that it's not a new version of the level clear music, since I was never a huge fan of this one. Ah well, it's not a huge deal. I'm still hoping that we get some new Sonic remixes coming our way, at least.

I didn't know people prefer Mushroomy Kingdom over Pac-Land. I far prefer the latter.

All cut veterans from Melee and Brawl are getting new amiibo!

https://nintendosoup.com/ice-climbers-and-other-veteran-fighters-in-super-smash-bros-ultimate-are-getting-amiibo/

Can't wait to pick up an official Ice Climbers figure after all these years! (Wonder if Pokemon Trainer is getting one, or if he'll just piggyback onto Charizard's existing figure)

I don't know where I'm even going to get Amiibos at now that Toys R Us closed. They always had a a large selection of them. Walmart and Target hardly ever have anything and the Gamestops I've been too don't ever seem to have much of a selection either.

Alright, time for some math like for the previous game then:
*The average cost of an Amiibo, non counting fluctuating prices over rarity or type, is 13 $ (had to confront random sources on a Google search, so keep this as an estimation more than anything; if you know otherwise, please mention it to me).
*For the purpose of this counting, i wanna consider valid only the actual Amiibos tied to Smash. Amiibos of characters like Mario but made for, say, Mario Odyssey, while compatible are not considered for this. Also, alternate versions of the same character, like first Bayo game Bayonetta or female Robin are not counted. A pure average estimation based on 1 Amiibo per character representing it, pure and simple.
*Therefore, for a person who doesn't have a single Amiibo of the characters for this new Smash, to get the entire collection the amount to spend right now is 884 $, a number that'll get higher with the remaining new fighters introduced.
*And as mentioned, this is not counting the fluctuation or the alternate versions of the same Amiibos: due to rarity, some Amiibos sold online get to cost at least 25 $, if not even more. Adding that, roughly, we're positively over a thousand bucks to get everyone. And it's JUST for the Smash Amiibos.

This is a collector's nightmare, christ on a bike. Nintendo is guaranteed to make a profit off this game based on this alone.

Thankfully I have six Smash Bros. amiibo (two of them from Toys R Us before closure in the U.S.) and put a cap on acquiring any more than that due to space constraints. Even if I had more space I am not going into bankruptcy trying to get all the Smash Bros. amiibo due to the market fluctuation.

Knock-knock! It's Knuckles!

Today's Item - Assist Trophy: Knuckles the Echidna
Knuckles attacks nearby fighters with his fist. He can also dig into the ground and then attack with an uppercut, so be careful!

I'm just glad to see Rad Red get represented at all in Ultimate. Here's hoping Sonic gets better treatment this time!

GameXplain hvae posted a video to show all character taunts. Obviously we've seen most of them before, but many have an extra layer of polish (which is especially obvious with returning characters like Squirtle). I don't remember Sonic's breakdance being as fast at 6:50

He's in 3rd Smash in a row, with 2 assist trophies and 2 stages, and bunch of stickers and normal trophies and other junk.

I'm fairly certain from all 3rd party characters, Sonic gets the best treatment. I guess his role in subspace emissary is questionable. On one hand he's got least screen time. On the other, he gets to save the day. I count that as "good enough".

...I mean, I still want more, but nevertheless.

I'm talking more about his representation through stages and music. (Though the latter isn't really the Smash team's fault) He's certainly had the most content of any guest fighter, but how much of it is actually new or interesting?

I still think Megaman got the best treatment out of all the 3rd party characters. His reveal trailer alone says a lot. His moveset is unique and his Final Smash represents the entire Megaman series, and he was even in the reveal trailer for Ridley as well.

By comparison, Sonic is very underwhelming. He has recycled animations from other characters and a few of his moves are the same and are just activated differently. Shadow will most likely be an echo fighter, and while I would have preferred Knuckles, there's really nothing we can do about it. I guess we'll have to wait till Sega makes a proper Sonic fighting game.

Outside of his down air, what moves of his recycle animations from other characters?

...that same video also makes a point of mentioning most of those same moves are inspired by Fighters. Come on man, seriously?

Yeah seriously. I'm not talking about the moves inspired by Fighters.
